00:00:00
Welcome back to Hacking Craft. Do you
00:00:02
have an old 12VE cooling fan and no idea
00:00:05
how to make use of it? Then this video
00:00:08
is exactly what you need. Today I'll
00:00:11
show you how to turn that little fan
00:00:13
along with a few simple tools into a
00:00:15
surprisingly powerful rust removal
00:00:17
machine.
00:00:19
Let's start by checking if the fan still
00:00:21
works. I'll connect the wires to a power
00:00:24
source. And yes, it's still running
00:00:26
perfectly.
00:00:33
Now, I've got a square wooden board
00:00:36
here.
00:00:43
I'll place the fan on it, make a few
00:00:45
adjustments, and mark all four corners
00:00:47
just like this.
00:00:54
[Music]
00:01:12
Once all corners are marked, I'll use a
00:01:14
drill to create holes at those exact
00:01:16
points.
00:01:19
This drill bit should do the trick.
00:01:23
[Music]
00:01:40
[Music]
00:01:48
Great. The board now has four holes
00:01:50
ready.
00:01:53
[Music]
00:01:59
Next, I've got a syringe. I'll remove
00:02:02
the needle and take out the rubber
00:02:03
plunger. It's going to be important for
00:02:05
what comes next.
00:02:08
[Music]
00:02:17
I'll use a soldering iron to poke a
00:02:19
small hole right in the center of the
00:02:21
rubber plunger. Just a tiny hole will
00:02:24
do.
00:02:36
Now I'll take a bolt and thread it
00:02:39
through the hole I just made in the
00:02:40
rubber.
00:02:43
It should look like this.
00:02:50
As for the syringe tube, I'll cut off
00:02:53
the nozzle end. We don't need that.
00:03:01
And I'll shorten the body a bit since
00:03:03
it's too long.
00:03:15
I'll clean up the cut edge to make it
00:03:16
neat.
00:03:36
And if the opening is too tight, I'll
00:03:38
widen it slightly.
00:03:43
[Music]
00:03:45
[Applause]
00:03:59
Now I'll insert the bolt with the rubber
00:04:00
piece into the syringe.
00:04:04
But before that, I'll add a bit of
00:04:06
lubricant. Just some regular bicycle
00:04:09
chain oil.
00:04:13
[Music]
00:04:21
This will help the rubber slide smoothly
00:04:24
inside the syringe body.
00:04:36
See, it works like a piston.
00:04:40
Over here, I've got some tightly twisted
00:04:43
metal wire.
00:04:45
I'll untwist one strand.
00:04:50
This is actually a piece of cable. And
00:04:52
these thin metal strands are made of
00:04:54
steel wire. Steel has very good
00:04:57
elasticity.
00:05:16
and wrap it around a bolt to form a
00:05:19
spring.
00:05:35
After wrapping it, I'll remove from the
00:05:37
bolt. And voila, we've got a custom
00:05:40
spring.
00:05:47
I'll trim and bend one end inward like
00:05:49
this.
00:06:07
then place inside the syringe tube.
00:06:12
So now we have a device that looks like
00:06:14
this.
00:06:15
Can you guess what it's for?
00:06:21
I've actually made four of them. They'll
00:06:23
serve as the legs of our rust removal
00:06:25
machine.
00:06:27
Let's attach each leg to the wooden
00:06:29
board using the holes we drilled
00:06:31
earlier.
00:06:32
Don't forget the rubber part must be
00:06:34
lubricated to move smoothly like this.
00:07:18
Now I'll use hot glue to firmly attach
00:07:20
the legs of the board.
00:07:23
Just apply glue around the base like
00:07:24
this.
00:07:49
Once all the legs are glued, I'll secure
00:07:52
a DC jack onto the board using more hot
00:07:54
glue.
00:08:00
Done. Now I'll place it exactly where I
00:08:02
want it.
00:08:19
I've also prepared a DC motor speed
00:08:22
controller. This knob here will adjust
00:08:24
the fan speed.
00:08:43
Let's glue it to the board opposite the
00:08:45
DC jack.
00:08:55
These two wires from the controller will
00:08:57
be connected to the DC jack terminals.
00:09:02
I'll twist and fold the copper wires
00:09:04
tightly, then insert them into the jacks
00:09:06
connectors.
00:09:20
and tighten the screws.
00:09:31
And just like that, we've wired up one
00:09:33
part of the machine. Let's test it with
00:09:35
a power source.
00:09:39
The indicator light on the controller is
00:09:41
on. Everything's working perfectly.
00:09:52
Next, I'll add nuts to the legs, one on
00:09:54
each leg.
00:10:12
I've got some rubber feet with
00:10:13
pre-drilled holes here, and I'll attach
00:10:15
them to the legs as well.
00:10:26
Now, it's starting to look unique,
00:10:28
right? Ever seen anything like this
00:10:30
before?
00:10:43
Next up, a plastic pipe.
00:10:48
I'll mark it at 12 cm because it's a bit
00:10:50
too long.
00:10:57
[Music]
00:11:04
And then cut it to size.
00:11:26
I'll also cut a slit down the length of
00:11:28
the tube after cutting it down.
00:11:35
[Music]
00:11:46
[Music]
00:11:56
Time to heat the pipe with a heat gun
00:11:58
until it softens.
00:12:17
Once it's flexible, I'll press it flat
00:12:20
using a block of wood.
00:12:28
After a short while, it cools and
00:12:31
hardens into a flat plastic sheet. Just
00:12:33
what I need.
00:12:37
I'll place the fan on top, adjust it,
00:12:40
and mark the four screw positions using
00:12:42
an old pen tube.
00:12:49
Mark carefully to avoid mistakes that
00:12:51
could mess up the alignment.
00:13:10
Now I'll drill holes at the marks.
00:13:19
Ah,
00:13:24
easy and quick.
00:13:32
I'll place the plastic onto the fan
00:13:40
and secure with bolts, washers, and
00:13:42
nuts.
00:13:55
Repeat for all four corners.
00:14:26
tighten while using a screwdriver to
00:14:28
make sure it's stable.
00:14:47
I've got a large nut here. I'll glue it
00:14:49
to one of the fan blades.
00:14:52
This will make the fan spin unevenly and
00:14:55
create vibrations.
00:14:58
Use a good amount of glue for a firm
00:15:00
hold. Then let it dry.
00:15:14
Now I'll attach the fan to machine's
00:15:16
frame by aligning the legs with the
00:15:17
holes.
00:15:38
and securing them with washers and nuts.
00:15:53
Tighten all connections firmly.
00:16:02
I'll use pliers just to be sure.
00:16:19
At the four legs of the rust removal
00:16:21
machine, the springs and rubber feet
00:16:23
serve to absorb impact. They function
00:16:26
like shock absorbers.
00:16:31
The fan wires now go into the motor
00:16:33
controller terminals.
00:16:43
Just twist and screw them in.
00:16:54
And that's nearly it. Let's plug it in
00:16:57
and see how it runs.
00:17:19
Works great.
00:17:24
Now I'll add a small rectangular piece
00:17:26
of plastic on top.
00:17:34
Apply a generous amount of glue.
00:17:44
Place it carefully and let it dry.
00:17:58
Now I've got a small metal tray. I'll
00:18:01
glue this tray to the very top of the
00:18:02
machine.
00:18:09
I'll apply a generous amount of glue to
00:18:11
make sure the connection is nice and
00:18:14
secure.
00:18:16
If you don't have a metal tray like
00:18:18
mine, feel free to use any tray you have
00:18:21
as long as the size fits your machine.
00:18:29
After applying the glue, I'll wait a
00:18:32
little while for it to dry.
00:18:35
And there it is. Our rust removal
00:18:37
machine is complete.
00:18:41
Let's take a moment to admire it before
00:18:43
we give it a try.
00:18:48
It looks pretty solid. Now, let me plug
00:18:50
it in and turn it on.
00:19:05
Let's pour some sand into the tray.
00:19:09
Remember that unbalanced fan blade? It
00:19:12
creates vibrations which cause the sand
00:19:14
to move and rub against the rusty items
00:19:15
you put inside.
00:19:19
[Music]
00:19:22
Here I have some small old metal tools
00:19:24
like spark plugs, drill bits, a few
00:19:27
nuts, and some other items.
00:19:31
As you can see, they are heavily rusted.
00:19:39
I'm going to place them into the metal
00:19:41
tray and turn the machine on.
00:20:02
Heat. Heat.
00:20:08
[Music]
00:20:27
[Music]
00:20:33
[Music]
00:20:35
After 15 minutes, I'll take out a few
00:20:37
items to see if everything looks good.
00:20:44
A good amount of rust has already flaked
00:20:47
off. The rust removal machine is working
00:20:49
very well, isn't it?
00:20:54
After some time, I've got a metal tray
00:20:57
and a sieve ready here. I'll pour
00:20:59
everything out onto the sie.
00:21:15
[Music]
00:21:18
And here are my tools. Can you see the
00:21:21
difference? They look so much better now
00:21:23
compared to how they were before, don't
00:21:25
they?
00:21:56
And just like that, the rust has been
00:21:59
shaken off and our tools look like new
00:22:01
again.
00:22:08
[Music]
00:22:14
So, I've successfully built a rust
00:22:15
removal machine from a 12VE fan,
00:22:18
syringes, and some basic materials. It's
00:22:22
amazing how we can transform old parts
00:22:24
into something truly useful.
