As 2025 comes to a close, CBS News is
00:00:03
looking back on all the news that made
00:00:05
headlines this year. Lindseay Riser has
00:00:08
more. From tariffs to immigration to a
00:00:11
government shutdown, 2025 marked a year
00:00:13
of historic political events and policy
00:00:15
changes. And CBS News polling was
00:00:17
tracking Americans reactions through all
00:00:19
of it. CBS News executive director of
00:00:21
elections and surveys Anthony Svanto
00:00:23
joins us now to break all of this down.
00:00:24
So Anthony, let's go ahead and start
00:00:25
with the new Trump administration. How
00:00:27
did people react at first and how did
00:00:29
their views change?
00:00:30
>> Hey there, Lindsay. Yeah, let's go to
00:00:32
January and start off with that Trump
00:00:34
administration. When it first came in,
00:00:36
immediately afterwards, people told us
00:00:38
in big numbers they thought he was doing
00:00:40
what he had promised in the campaign.
00:00:43
And there was also a lot of optimism
00:00:44
about the economy going forward. What we
00:00:47
subsequently started to see though is a
00:00:50
theme that would stretch throughout the
00:00:52
year and that was people talking about
00:00:54
costs, talking about prices. This is a
00:00:57
snapshot from February, but we saw
00:00:58
people saying throughout the year they
00:01:00
still thought prices were high, were
00:01:01
still going up. That was important
00:01:03
because as we saw through the year, and
00:01:06
this is from one of our most recent
00:01:08
polls in December, we often found people
00:01:10
finding the administration they felt
00:01:12
wasn't putting enough focus in their
00:01:14
mind on trying to lower prices and also
00:01:16
describing things with regard to
00:01:18
inflation as better than people were
00:01:21
really feeling. So what happened with
00:01:23
all of that? Well, what we saw from US
00:01:25
economy ratings was that they stayed
00:01:28
low. And they weren't just low this
00:01:29
year, frankly. You'd have to go back
00:01:31
even to 2020 to find the last time
00:01:33
majority of people had said that the US
00:01:35
economy was good. So, this is a
00:01:37
yearslong trend, if you will, and it
00:01:40
really still was all about those prices
00:01:42
and those costs. The approval ratings
00:01:46
for the president's handling of the
00:01:47
economy is kind of a result of those
00:01:50
feelings because he started out pretty
00:01:52
high at 51 and it slowly somewhat
00:01:55
steadily did decline over the course of
00:01:57
the year. Again, was about that
00:01:59
perceived focus and certainly this is
00:02:01
going to be a topic that then continues
00:02:03
into 2026 with people looking for that
00:02:06
focus on costs and inflation.
00:02:09
>> What about issues like Doge cuts and
00:02:11
tariff policies? How did that shape
00:02:13
people's views throughout the year?
00:02:14
>> Well, yeah. Early on, what we saw was a
00:02:16
lot of partisanship. And this was a
00:02:18
story you and I talked about throughout,
00:02:20
right? Partisan breaks on a lot of
00:02:22
things. With regard to Doge's influence,
00:02:24
you saw Republicans more likely to say
00:02:26
they thought it should have a lot.
00:02:27
Democrats not so much. The other part of
00:02:30
it was tariffs. As you mentioned, what
00:02:33
we were looking at was did people think
00:02:35
they would raise prices in the short
00:02:36
term? Did people think that they would
00:02:38
then affect prices long-term? because
00:02:41
that was one of the administration's
00:02:42
arguments, right? That this was a
00:02:43
long-term play for the economy. You
00:02:46
certainly saw a lot of people saying
00:02:47
that, and this is a snapshot from March,
00:02:49
but this continued through the year,
00:02:51
too. You saw people saying that they
00:02:52
thought it would increase prices and in
00:02:54
some respects also in the long term.
00:02:56
Republicans thought it would bring back
00:02:58
manufacturing jobs to the US, but we did
00:03:00
see partisan splits on that as well.
00:03:03
Overall, they they weren't terribly
00:03:05
popular.
00:03:06
>> All right, let's talk about the summer.
00:03:07
We saw some protests over immigration
00:03:09
policies and roundups, the the
00:03:11
president's deportation program. Walk us
00:03:14
through how that was seen.
00:03:15
>> So again, let me come back to the
00:03:17
partisanship on this because this is one
00:03:19
of those places where we saw really
00:03:21
really strong approval from Republicans.
00:03:24
This is approval disapproval of that
00:03:27
deportation program. Very much lower
00:03:30
among Democrats, split among
00:03:33
independents. So this was a policy
00:03:35
Republicans really liked and in many
00:03:37
ways throughout the year Republicans
00:03:39
told us that this was the way they were
00:03:41
evaluating the the president more so in
00:03:45
many cases than on the economy and that
00:03:48
stood out as a difference as well.
00:03:50
Right. The other part of the deportation
00:03:52
program and what underpinned a lot of
00:03:54
the movement on it such as there such as
00:03:56
there was or the differences on it I
00:03:58
should say is this. When people told us
00:04:00
that they felt like the program was
00:04:02
deporting more people than they had
00:04:04
expected, they were more likely to
00:04:06
disapprove of it. But when they felt
00:04:08
like it was
00:04:10
trying to deport fewer or the same
00:04:12
amount, they were more likely to approve
00:04:14
of it. So it was how they saw it going
00:04:17
about the program that really affected
00:04:20
their views of it. And this is from the
00:04:23
summer, but this was also throughout the
00:04:24
year.
00:04:25
>> Few political stories in the fall that
00:04:26
you were closely watching. of course the
00:04:28
government shutdown some major elections
00:04:30
also what did we see and also how might
00:04:32
what some of the issues you pulled about
00:04:34
in 2025 inform 2026
00:04:37
>> so let me reference a couple of those
00:04:39
things these are from the exit polls
00:04:41
taken the nights of those elections in
00:04:44
California where they passed Prop 50 a
00:04:48
lot of folks who voted yes said that was
00:04:50
to counter the changes they saw
00:04:53
Republicans making in other states and
00:04:56
what that really sets up for context is
00:04:58
this was a very nationalized
00:05:01
sort of contest and you saw a lot of
00:05:04
fights throughout the year over
00:05:05
redistricting. We don't normally see
00:05:07
redistricting a lot in the middle of a
00:05:10
dec decade. So that was something
00:05:12
notable about 2025 and certainly sets up
00:05:15
a lot of what to watch in 2026. And then
00:05:19
the other part of course the Trump
00:05:21
administration were they making people
00:05:23
financially better off? We saw some of
00:05:25
that. We also saw a lot of financial
00:05:28
concerns come out in the elections as
00:05:31
well in November, but this is where we
00:05:33
ended up in December where relatively
00:05:35
fewer people felt like they were
00:05:36
financially better off. A little more
00:05:38
optimism going into 26 for that, but
00:05:41
again setting up. We saw cost of living
00:05:44
a lot in the elections. We'll see cost
00:05:46
of living, I'm sure, be a hot topic as
00:05:48
we get into 26. All right, Anthony
00:05:50
Savanto, thank
