male announcer: "In Touch," the teaching ministry of Dr. Charles
00:00:22
Stanley, reaching the world with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
00:00:26
Next on "In Touch," "When We Are Fearful."
00:00:32
Dr. Charles Stanley: Fear and anxiety have plagued the human
00:00:34
race from the very beginning of time.
00:00:36
Think about this, the first recorded conversation between
00:00:42
God and the first man
00:00:45
was like this: man,
00:00:47
in that conversation said, "I was afraid."
00:00:52
And all down through the history of humanity,
00:00:54
people have been saying, "But I'm afraid.
00:00:58
I just have fear.
00:00:59
I am anxious."
00:01:00
And all through the Old Testament,
00:01:02
God's response has been, "Do not be afraid.
00:01:05
Do not be afraid."
00:01:07
In the New Testament, over and over and over
00:01:08
again, "Do not be afraid."
00:01:10
For example, when the angel spoke to Mary,
00:01:13
he said, about the coming of Jesus--she was to be His mother,
00:01:18
"Do not be afraid."
00:01:20
To Joseph, "Do not be afraid."
00:01:21
To John the Baptist's father, Zacharias, "Do not be afraid."
00:01:25
When Jesus was speaking to the multitudes in the Sermon on the
00:01:29
Mount, He said to them there on the hillside,
00:01:31
"Don't be anxious about anything."
00:01:33
Three times He said that, "Don't be anxious.
00:01:35
Don't be afraid."
00:01:37
To the apostles out on the sea, in the storm when they were
00:01:39
scared to death, He said to them, "Do not be afraid."
00:01:43
The apostle Paul, at one time in his life,
00:01:45
undergoing real difficulty, and God said to him,
00:01:49
"Do not be afraid anymore."
00:01:52
And I was so glad he had that part in there because it made me
00:01:54
realize that the apostle Paul, even he experienced times
00:01:59
of anxiety and fear.
00:02:00
"Do not be afraid anymore but go on speaking."
00:02:03
John the Beloved, who wrote the Revelation,
00:02:06
at the vision of the Lord Jesus Christ and he falls on his face
00:02:10
and he is absolutely petrified in the presence of Jesus.
00:02:13
And what did He say to him, He--the Bible says He walked
00:02:15
over and touched him and He said, "Do not be afraid."
00:02:18
And what is the admonition all through the scripture?
00:02:21
God said through the apostle Paul in 2 Timothy chapter 1,
00:02:25
verse 7, He said, "I have not given you the spirit of fear but
00:02:29
of power and of love and of a sound mind."
00:02:31
The apostle Paul, again, said, "Don't be
00:02:34
anxious about anything."
00:02:36
And anxiety is simply fear of the future.
00:02:39
"Don't be anxious about anything but in everything,
00:02:41
by prayer and supplication with faith," and he says,
00:02:44
"let your requests be made known to God."
00:02:48
All through the scriptures, God is admonishing us not to be
00:02:51
afraid, not to be anxious because,
00:02:54
as His children, we have no basis for fear.
00:02:58
That does not mean that something may not happen and,
00:03:01
for that moment--for example, if you walked out and someone stuck
00:03:04
a revolver in your face, you would have some fear
00:03:08
and anxiety at that moment.
00:03:10
Now, what I want to deal with in this message is something a
00:03:13
little bit more subjective than that.
00:03:15
And that is, I want to deal with those fears that oftentimes
00:03:18
we're not even aware of.
00:03:20
And even when we are experiencing them,
00:03:23
we can't put our finger on why they're there or why they keep
00:03:26
cropping up in our life.
00:03:28
And what's their origin? What's their root?
00:03:30
So, I want you to turn, if you will,
00:03:31
to Isaiah chapter 41.
00:03:34
This is one of those verses that I tell you that you ought to
00:03:36
underline, put a circle around it,
00:03:38
whatever you need to do because I believe this is one of those
00:03:41
anchors--those anchor texts in the Bible that God's people
00:03:45
should be very much aware of, and especially in light of what
00:03:49
we're going to talk about in this message,
00:03:51
and that is: the source of our strength: when facing fear or
00:03:54
when fearful, the source of our strength
00:03:57
when fearful or anxious.
00:03:58
And anxiety is simply the fear of the future.
00:04:01
It may be the fear of the next minute,
00:04:02
the next day or the next hour or the next month,
00:04:04
the next year, the next ten years.
00:04:06
And so, Isaiah chapter 41.
00:04:09
Look, if you will, in this tenth verse.
00:04:12
He says, "Do not fear, for I am with you;
00:04:17
do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God.
00:04:23
I will strengthen you, surely I will help you,
00:04:27
surely I will uphold you
00:04:29
with My righteous right hand."
00:04:31
Here is an awesome promise of assurance for all of us who are
00:04:34
going through fear and anxiety.
00:04:36
And listen to what He says.
00:04:37
He says, "Do not be afraid."
00:04:39
But secondly, He gives us a word concerning an attitude here
00:04:44
that, oftentimes, we're not aware of.
00:04:45
He says, "Do not anxiously look around you."
00:04:48
Now, that is one of Satan's most subtle and successful traps.
00:04:52
And that is to get our focus off of God,
00:04:54
looking at our circumstances, and what happens?
00:04:57
The more we look at them, the more anxious we become.
00:05:00
So that we are a part of and we are,
00:05:05
oftentimes, the cause of our anxiety,
00:05:07
and that is, looking at circumstances,
00:05:09
trying to evaluate and weigh what could happen,
00:05:11
what might happen, what has happened,
00:05:13
what do they say will happen and whatever.
00:05:15
He says, "Don't look around you anxiously.
00:05:17
I'm your God. I'll be with you.
00:05:19
I'll help you. I'll strengthen you.
00:05:20
I'll uphold you with My righteous right hand."
00:05:23
Now, what I want to do is I want to deal with those root causes
00:05:28
of fear and anxiety.
00:05:30
Well, let's look at some of these.
00:05:33
And the first one is this: a feeling of being inadequate.
00:05:38
What happens is there's a tape going on in your mind that says
00:05:43
to you--somewhere back yonder it got planted--
00:05:45
that is, "You're inadequate.
00:05:47
You can't do it. It won't work.
00:05:48
You're not going to succeed at that.
00:05:50
Don't even try."
00:05:51
And what happens is our imagination begins to function
00:05:55
when we get this offer, this opportunity.
00:05:57
And what happens is, instead of imagining yourself to be
00:06:00
successful, that you can do it, it's a wonderful opportunity and
00:06:04
you're going to move ahead in life,
00:06:05
your imagination plays this trick on you: it begins to play
00:06:08
an old tape, and the old tape
00:06:10
says, "No, you can't do that.
00:06:11
Some other people can but you can't."
00:06:14
And before long, instead of imagining yourself to be
00:06:17
successful to achieve or to do that,
00:06:19
you begin to imagine yourself as failing.
00:06:21
And then that sets up a whole domino effect and you begin to
00:06:24
come up with all the reasons that you don't really think
00:06:27
it'll work and that you can do it and it won't happen that way.
00:06:30
And so what happens is you live in anxiety and fear.
00:06:34
That has nothing to do with reality.
00:06:37
It is something preconceived in our thinking.
00:06:40
And we don't realize how often we are programmed in our
00:06:44
thinking that is in error.
00:06:46
And so, we feel inadequate to meet certain people and to do
00:06:51
certain things, and especially opportunities in life.
00:06:54
So, often, those opportunities come and we let them go by
00:06:58
because we don't feel adequate.
00:07:00
A second, I think, subtle reason, root cause of
00:07:05
our fears and anxieties is this: we somehow don't believe
00:07:13
that we can reach the standard that we've set for ourselves.
00:07:18
And all of us have set certain standards.
00:07:19
You have moral standards, you have standards in
00:07:22
your work as far as your performance and so forth,
00:07:25
and some of you are very committed to doing a very good
00:07:26
job no matter what, whatever it might be.
00:07:29
And so, you've set very high standards for yourself.
00:07:32
Well, if you set standards that are unrealistic,
00:07:35
standards that God didn't allow you to set,
00:07:38
you set them for yourself, sometimes we set standards
00:07:40
that are beyond our capacity.
00:07:42
And what we do is we look around to see what other people are
00:07:44
achieving and what they are doing and they are saying,
00:07:46
"Well, if I--they can do that, then I can do that."
00:07:48
And what happens is, we set unrealistic standards for
00:07:52
ourselves, then we can't meet them.
00:07:54
Then we go through life trying and we fail and we keep trying
00:07:58
and, you know, "I've got to prove it to myself
00:07:59
and I've got to prove it others.
00:08:01
And what are they going to think if I don't match up
00:08:03
and if I don't achieve?"
00:08:05
And so, we live with the anxiety that won't
00:08:07
be able to measure up.
00:08:08
Well, there's a third, I believe, root cause of
00:08:11
these things, and that is this whole attitude
00:08:15
of a sense of guilt.
00:08:17
And that is, if people live with a sense of guilt,
00:08:20
that somewhere along the way, they've either done something or
00:08:24
somehow God's displeased, they live with anxiety.
00:08:28
And you see, that kind of person will oftentimes come to this
00:08:32
type of situation in their life where they
00:08:34
begin to succeed in life!
00:08:35
And just over and over and over I've seen this happen.
00:08:38
They begin to succeed in life, they begin
00:08:39
to move on, and what happens?
00:08:41
Right when they're just about to really take off and succeed,
00:08:43
they have a setback.
00:08:45
Well, they sort of get over that and
00:08:46
they'll keep moving on again.
00:08:48
And next time you see them, they've had another one.
00:08:50
Why? Now, here's the reason.
00:08:51
Psychologically they've already decided,
00:08:54
"I don't deserve to succeed."
00:08:56
Why don't you deserve to succeed?
00:08:57
"Well, back yonder in my life," or "I was born this way.
00:08:59
I was born that way.
00:09:01
This is my background, and I didn't have this," or,
00:09:04
the--or, "I was told this about myself."
00:09:06
Or, "This is what I did back yonder in life."
00:09:08
And it's amazing how many people will not succeed in life because
00:09:13
they don't feel worthy of succeeding.
00:09:16
They just don't feel like they deserve it!
00:09:18
Well, what is the grace of God?
00:09:20
The grace of God is the goodness and love and mercy and kindness
00:09:22
of God to us, not because we deserve it but because His love
00:09:26
for us does not pour out upon us on the basis of what we deserve
00:09:29
but on the basis of His character.
00:09:31
And His character says He loves us unconditionally.
00:09:35
And so there's that sense of guilt.
00:09:36
That is no way to live.
00:09:39
But you see, these are the root causes of a
00:09:42
lot of our fears and anxieties.
00:09:43
Now, that's not all of them, but that's some.
00:09:45
Let me just mention one other, and that is: attitudes
00:09:50
that we grew up with.
00:09:51
And let me just give you an example.
00:09:53
For example, attitudes that we grew up with, let me just say
00:09:57
that all of us were born with a tape recorder right here.
00:10:01
And it's been running since the moment we were born.
00:10:04
What's on those tapes?
00:10:06
Well, I'll tell you what's on that tape.
00:10:08
It's a lifelong tape.
00:10:09
Everything that came your way that was good,
00:10:13
the wonderful things that your mother said to you or your
00:10:15
father said to you early in life, that's on there.
00:10:18
All the things on there that you wish you'd never
00:10:20
heard, they're on there.
00:10:22
All the ways that you were treated as a child growing
00:10:24
up, that's on there.
00:10:26
All the abuse you took, all the difficulties,
00:10:28
hardships, trials, criticism, rejection,
00:10:32
all of that stuff's on the tape.
00:10:34
Now, the difference is that all of our tapes are different.
00:10:37
But I'm here to tell you there's one going on in your mind.
00:10:40
Now, I can't illustrate yours because you wouldn't want
00:10:42
me to do that, so I'll just have to illustrate mine.
00:10:44
So, let me give you an example.
00:10:47
When I was coming along, as I mentioned before,
00:10:51
my father died when I was about nine months of age.
00:10:53
And so, my mother and I moved seventeen times the first
00:10:57
sixteen years of my life.
00:10:59
That certainly did not build any security within me.
00:11:02
One thing my mother would say to me when I was a kid growing up,
00:11:04
"Now, don't you go out there and get hurt.
00:11:06
Don't play in the street.
00:11:08
Don't get run over.
00:11:11
Don't fall down.
00:11:13
Don't work too hard."
00:11:15
And the message to me was, "Don't,
00:11:17
don't, don't, don't, don't."
00:11:18
Now, I know what her genuine, loving motive was.
00:11:22
"I want to take care of Charles because he's all I've got now."
00:11:25
And I'm sure that in those early years,
00:11:27
she--I was not only her son but I was it.
00:11:31
In other words, I represented my father to her,
00:11:33
and so she didn't want me to get hurt,
00:11:35
didn't want me to work too hard, didn't want me to do this,
00:11:36
that, and the other.
00:11:38
"Don't play rough now.
00:11:39
If you all are going to play football, don't play rough."
00:11:42
No other way to play but rough.
00:11:44
And so, but that's the way she felt.
00:11:47
And then of course, what she would say to me,
00:11:50
"Now, you don't want to fail God.
00:11:52
Mmm, you don't want to fail God.
00:11:54
You just want to be obedient to Him.
00:11:55
You don't want to fail God."
00:11:57
Now, those were messages I got on the tape recorder.
00:12:01
Now, I got a lot of others, but I got those.
00:12:03
And so, what did that do for me?
00:12:07
Because you see, if it came from my mother, it was law!
00:12:11
It wasn't a question of whether I wanted it on the recorder or
00:12:13
not, it got on there.
00:12:15
I didn't ask to be told those things.
00:12:18
It was something that I was told.
00:12:22
I caught some things, then I--I was taught some things.
00:12:25
Every single one of us has been taught and we have caught a lot
00:12:29
we didn't ask for, too young to understand what in the world was
00:12:32
going on, but it was going on.
00:12:34
And so, the tape was playing.
00:12:36
What was the tape?
00:12:37
"Don't take any risks in life.
00:12:39
Oh, don't take any risks. You may get hurt.
00:12:41
Somebody may take advantage of you.
00:12:43
You may get killed. You may lose.
00:12:45
Mmm, don't do that."
00:12:48
And so, what happened?
00:12:50
The tape is, "Don't be courageous.
00:12:52
Don't be bold. Don't hang out there and do it.
00:12:54
Just be real careful.
00:12:56
Watch out. Watch out.
00:12:57
People'll take advantage of you. Watch out, be careful."
00:13:00
Tape going on and on and on.
00:13:03
One of the tapes that went on was--you know,
00:13:06
when you don't have much, the tape that goes off is,
00:13:10
"You don't have much.
00:13:11
Be careful with what you have.
00:13:13
Be very careful because you may lose it.
00:13:15
If you lose it, you may not get it back."
00:13:17
One wonderful thing is what balanced that tape off is still
00:13:20
watching my mom give when she had almost nothing to give!
00:13:24
And somehow that balanced it, but she would say,
00:13:26
"You don't want to get in debt.
00:13:28
And you don't want to spend--you don't want to waste your money."
00:13:31
And she would make me give an account for my money,
00:13:33
which was a good idea.
00:13:35
And the very idea of going into debt was
00:13:36
absolutely a horrifying thing.
00:13:38
It would never have been done.
00:13:39
No matter what you had or didn't have,
00:13:41
you just didn't do it.
00:13:42
So, listen, on that tape, while there are some things that have
00:13:46
caused me some problems, there are some absolutely wonderful
00:13:49
things on that tape.
00:13:50
That's a whole 'nother series of sermons.
00:13:52
Some wonderful things on that tape that I wouldn't ever,
00:13:56
ever, ever want to deny in any way.
00:14:00
But, the causes of fear and anxiety,
00:14:03
and then of course, when she said,
00:14:05
"You don't want to fail God."
00:14:06
Then what's the tape that goes off?
00:14:08
"Watch out!
00:14:10
Watch out. Be sure you're being obedient.
00:14:12
Be careful. Don't sin against God.
00:14:14
Don't be doing anything you wouldn't want to be
00:14:15
doing when Jesus comes."
00:14:16
And so, what happens?
00:14:18
I grew up with this tape going off.
00:14:19
And these tapes are, "Don't take any risks.
00:14:21
Watch out for God.
00:14:23
Or be careful what you have," all of these things.
00:14:26
Now, what I want you to see is this: there's
00:14:28
a way to deal with this.
00:14:30
But if you don't realize you've got a tape going and you don't
00:14:34
identify it, then it's not going to work.
00:14:37
So, let's look, for just a moment,
00:14:38
at what are the consequences of these fears and--the--these
00:14:43
thought processes that are just laying in there under the
00:14:45
surface, just waiting to be ignited by some circumstance and
00:14:48
erupts in fear and anxiety?
00:14:50
Well, there are several consequences.
00:14:52
For example, when a person is living with that,
00:14:55
oftentimes their judgment is clouded and they don't make wise
00:14:58
decisions because they have cloudy judgment.
00:15:00
Why?
00:15:02
Because permeating all of their rationalization,
00:15:04
their reasoning is fear and anxiety,
00:15:05
"But suppose this and suppose that?
00:15:07
But if this and what if?"
00:15:10
Secondly, those persons, oftentimes,
00:15:13
are not as productive as they could be for the simple reason
00:15:16
that their minds are so clouded and they are indecisive and they
00:15:20
are not productive because of fear of failure.
00:15:24
Which brings me to another problem
00:15:25
and that's procrastination.
00:15:27
See, a person who's a procrastinator is person who
00:15:30
waits until they think they can do it perfectly before they try.
00:15:34
And so, because they fear failure so badly,
00:15:39
and the feelings of not measuring up to what is expected
00:15:42
of them, and the feelings of the possibility of rejection because
00:15:46
they don't measure up absolutely paralyzes them.
00:15:50
I see it over and over and over again in people's work habits.
00:15:54
A person who is a procrastinator,
00:15:56
they're waiting until they can do it perfectly.
00:15:57
And so, there's what happens.
00:15:59
They had rather wait and they had rather get behind,
00:16:04
they'd rather get themselves in a real difficult situation and,
00:16:07
oftentimes, maybe even lose their job than to face the pain
00:16:11
of not being able to do it perfectly and measure up to
00:16:14
their own set of impossible standards.
00:16:18
Oftentimes, the result is a persecution attitude.
00:16:21
That is, "Everybody's after me.
00:16:22
Somebody's trying to persecute me.
00:16:24
They don't like me. They're going to do me in."
00:16:27
All of that is a result of what?
00:16:28
Just laying down in there those thought processes,
00:16:32
just waiting for something to ignite them to cause
00:16:36
a person to fear that.
00:16:37
And so, when you and I begin to think of how it affects us,
00:16:42
think about other people, for example,
00:16:43
and how it affects them.
00:16:46
Some people, this is why they go to alcohol,
00:16:49
pills, and all the rest, why?
00:16:50
They just live in fear, and they say, "Well, I've got
00:16:52
to have something to get rid of these jitters."
00:16:54
Well, the thing--the way to get rid of these jitters and these
00:16:56
anxieties is to find out the truth about them and deal with
00:17:00
them on a--in a godly fashion, not taking something out of
00:17:03
bottle, whether it's that small or that size.
00:17:06
But that is exactly what people do.
00:17:08
Think about this, if you're living in anxieties and fears in
00:17:11
life, every time you get on your knees to cry out to
00:17:14
God, what's the tape going to do?
00:17:16
The tape's going to start, "You don't deserve it.
00:17:18
Why should God answer your prayer?
00:17:19
Look at your life. You don't measure up."
00:17:21
And what happens?
00:17:22
You get up and you think, "Why doesn't God answer my prayer?"
00:17:25
Because you keep listening to the tape,
00:17:27
which has the root causes of our anxieties and our fears.
00:17:31
We need to get rid of the tape recorder.
00:17:33
Get rid of it!
00:17:34
You never deal with what's going on,
00:17:37
on the inside until you look inside, not outside.
00:17:40
Now, how do we overcome these fears and anxieties in our life?
00:17:44
Well, the first thing is very important.
00:17:47
Listen, recognize that it is there.
00:17:51
Don't deny that you're anxious.
00:17:53
You say, "Well, you know, I'm a Christian and I believe God and
00:17:55
I trust God and I believe the Bible."
00:17:57
Or I could say, "I'm a pastor, therefore I have no fears
00:17:59
and no anxieties in life."
00:18:01
Well, that would be a lie because there are times when I
00:18:04
have to face it just like you do.
00:18:06
But I think God is in the process of teaching me how.
00:18:08
And so, I want to share it with you because it's working for me.
00:18:12
First of all, I've got to recognize it.
00:18:14
Now, listen to this carefully.
00:18:15
You see, if you don't, listen, not just recognize that you're
00:18:19
fearful or anxious but identify it.
00:18:21
What is it?
00:18:23
You say, "Well, how do you do that?"
00:18:24
Well, here's the best way to do it.
00:18:25
The next time you feel anxious or afraid of--about something,
00:18:28
ask yourself the question, stop and ask yourself,
00:18:30
"Now what's going on?
00:18:32
What's going on around me?
00:18:34
What do I think ignited this sense
00:18:37
of--is it something I heard?
00:18:38
Was it a telephone call?
00:18:40
Was it something I saw?
00:18:42
What's ignited this?
00:18:44
Is it something that's just been growing?
00:18:46
What's going on around me so that I can identify the thing
00:18:51
that caused me to feel anxious or fearful?"
00:18:54
If I can identify it, then I can get back to the root.
00:18:58
If I don't identify it, I'll just keep having
00:18:59
the same old problem, the tape will keep going.
00:19:02
So, first of all, I need to recognize that I am fearful and
00:19:04
identify what's going on, what's happening here?
00:19:09
The second thing, very important,
00:19:11
is my relationship to Christ.
00:19:13
My friend, if you don't have a relationship with Jesus Christ,
00:19:16
you're going to live with certain fears and anxieties in
00:19:18
life because you don't have any security.
00:19:20
The only thing that is absolutely sure in this
00:19:22
life is Jesus Christ.
00:19:24
He is the only thing that is certain.
00:19:27
So, if I'm going to deal with any kind of fear and anxiety in
00:19:29
my life, I must deal with my relationship to Jesus Christ
00:19:32
because He says, "It is appointed unto man once to die,
00:19:35
and after this the judgment."
00:19:37
And He says, "Whatever a man sows he's going to reap."
00:19:39
So I could think of a whole lot of principles that would cause
00:19:41
me lots of anxiety and fear.
00:19:43
And if you face the truth, you will have a reason to be fearful
00:19:46
and a reason to be anxious if you have rejected the person of
00:19:50
Jesus Christ, the Son of God who came into this world
00:19:52
in order to save you.
00:19:54
So, to receive Him by faith as my personal Savior,
00:19:59
knowing that my sins are forgiven,
00:20:01
past, present, and future, I am a child of God and now kept by
00:20:06
His grace, not by performance.
00:20:10
Absolutely secure.
00:20:13
First of all, recognize the presence
00:20:16
of fear and identify it.
00:20:17
Secondly, your relationship to Jesus Christ,
00:20:20
be sure that's right.
00:20:22
What's number three? Number three is the recorder.
00:20:26
Just jot it down, the recorder.
00:20:28
What you want to do is, once you identify these anxieties that
00:20:33
keep creeping up, what you want to do is say,
00:20:35
"All right, that's the tape that's going off.
00:20:39
Now, what is the root?
00:20:41
Where did that tape come from?
00:20:43
How did it get recorded?"
00:20:45
Listen, do you realize it may be something that a schoolteacher
00:20:47
said and put on your tape, something your father or your
00:20:51
mother put on that tape?
00:20:54
It may be something that a husband or wife put on the tape.
00:20:58
It may be something that your parent put on a tape or somebody
00:21:01
you work with but, listen, that root cause of anxiety and fear,
00:21:07
listen, it got on the tape!
00:21:11
And when you recognize and identify what it is and you
00:21:15
trace it back to its root, here's what you can do,
00:21:17
you can just take that tape and pull it out
00:21:20
and tear it to shreds.
00:21:22
"I reject that tape.
00:21:24
I don't have to play that tape anymore."
00:21:26
Listen, does that mean it'll never go off again?
00:21:28
No, it means the next time it starts,
00:21:31
you can say, "I don't have to accept that.
00:21:34
That's just the old tape playing.
00:21:36
I tore that--forget that, I tore that up.
00:21:38
I'm not listening to that."
00:21:40
Which leads me to next step, and that is the idea of rebuking it!
00:21:43
Now, there have been times when I've gotten on my knees and
00:21:45
crying out to God about something and absolutely,
00:21:48
suddenly be overwhelmed with anxiety and fear!
00:21:52
Now, you know, when it hits you like that,
00:21:54
it's like a cloud, you're just smothered in it.
00:21:57
But I discovered this: all I have to say is,
00:22:02
"Father, I want to thank You that's not of You because You
00:22:05
said, 'I've not given you the spirit fear or of anxiety.'
00:22:08
I rebuke that in the name of Jesus Christ.
00:22:10
I reject this feeling and refuse it from this moment on."
00:22:14
And I'm here to tell you it will absolutely disappear.
00:22:17
Why?
00:22:19
Because you have taken authority over a spirit that is not from
00:22:24
God and is straight from the devil himself.
00:22:27
And what he's trying to do is to hinder you
00:22:28
in your relationship to God.
00:22:30
You have the power and the authority, as a child of God,
00:22:33
to rebuke and reject anything
00:22:36
that does not come from God.
00:22:37
You do not have to accept it as your own.
00:22:41
So, what you do is, you identify the tape.
00:22:43
When it starts playing, shut it down.
00:22:45
Cut it off. You don't have to listen to it.
00:22:47
The next step is to reach for the anchor.
00:22:50
What is the anchor? Go back to Isaiah chapter 41.
00:22:53
Now, look at this.
00:22:55
All of us need, at some time or the other,
00:22:57
those scriptural anchors we can refer to when we are
00:23:01
facing fears and anxieties.
00:23:02
Now, listen to this.
00:23:04
Let's say this is your anchor and you're
00:23:06
facing some fear or anxiety.
00:23:07
Look at this.
00:23:08
"Do not fear, for I am with you."
00:23:11
Who's with you?
00:23:13
The Almighty, sovereign, omnipotent God.
00:23:15
He says, "I'm with you."
00:23:16
How long is He going to be with you?
00:23:18
Every moment, every step of the way to the end of life.
00:23:21
"Do not fear, I am with you; do not anxiously look about you."
00:23:25
Don't do it!
00:23:26
Listen to this next phrase: "For I am your God."
00:23:28
Listen, your circumstances are not your God.
00:23:32
"Don't look around.
00:23:33
Nobody can do anything to you unless I allow it.
00:23:37
They may have evil in mind, but
00:23:38
I'm going to turn it in for your good.
00:23:39
It doesn't make any difference."
00:23:41
He says, "Don't anxiously look about you.
00:23:43
I'm your God. That's not your god.
00:23:45
They're not your god. He's not your god.
00:23:46
She's not your god.
00:23:48
Nobody can control your life but Me."
00:23:50
"Do not anxiously look about you;
00:23:51
I am your God."
00:23:54
Next phrase: "I will strengthen you."
00:23:57
Who is that?
00:23:59
That's the omnipotent God who will enable us to face in and
00:24:02
every circumstance of life successfully.
00:24:05
"I with strengthen you, surely I will help you."
00:24:08
Now listen, He says, "I will help you.
00:24:11
Whatever you are facing, just look right to your right.
00:24:13
There I am.
00:24:14
I'm going to help you through this."
00:24:16
Then He says: "I will uphold you with My righteous right hand."
00:24:20
In the scriptures that is symbolical,
00:24:22
listen, of God's willingness to divinely intervene in your
00:24:26
situation and circumstance.
00:24:27
And He says, "I'm going to uphold you.
00:24:30
I am reliable and faithful God.
00:24:32
I'll strengthen you. I'll help you.
00:24:34
I'll undergird you.
00:24:35
Whatever you need, I will--surely I will do it."
00:24:38
Now, my friend, how can you get it any better than that?
00:24:41
He says, "I'm with you.
00:24:42
Strengthen you, uphold you with My righteous right hand."
00:24:46
Reach for the anchor.
00:24:47
But, listen, get yourself an anchor before you begin
00:24:51
to be fearful or afraid.
00:24:54
But if you haven't, the next time,
00:24:56
go back to this forty first chapter of Isaiah and say,
00:24:58
"Okay God, here's what You said, I'm claiming it."
00:25:02
What does He want to do?
00:25:04
The next thing I want to say, and that is to refocus your
00:25:06
attention, because here's what happens.
00:25:10
When I look around, I become anxious and fearful
00:25:13
and I reach for the anchor.
00:25:15
All of a sudden, what's happened?
00:25:17
My eye has moved from that which makes me anxious
00:25:21
to that which makes me secure.
00:25:23
I've refocused my attention upon my circumstances to the anchor.
00:25:27
And what happens?
00:25:28
Immediately my faith just goes out of the roof!
00:25:32
Why?
00:25:33
Because I am reminded that He said, "I'm with you.
00:25:37
I'm your God.
00:25:38
I'll help you, strengthen you.
00:25:40
I'll uphold you with my righteous right hand."
00:25:42
And what happens?
00:25:43
It is amazing how fears and anxieties absolutely disappear
00:25:48
in the presence of the living Word of God.
00:25:53
You do not have to be anxious. You do not have to be fearful.
00:25:56
And listen carefully, nobody can make you fearful.
00:26:01
And no one can make you anxious.
00:26:03
You and I have to agree to respond to that.
00:26:07
And you and I have Christ living on the inside of us to enable
00:26:11
us, to encourage us.
00:26:14
And He says, "If you'll listen to Me,
00:26:16
you'll dwell securely and you won't dread any kind of news
00:26:21
because I am your God."
