00:00:07
I've gone hands-on with Neo3 on three
00:00:09
separate occasions at this point. The
00:00:11
first was with the limited time demo,
00:00:13
which was all just about me getting my
00:00:14
bearings back and remembering how to
00:00:16
play Neo after 5 or so years away. The
00:00:19
second was a preview event that was part
00:00:20
of our IGN first coverage, where I was
00:00:22
able to dig a little deeper into the new
00:00:24
Ninja mode and talk about some of the
00:00:26
evolutions made in the Neo formula. For
00:00:28
this third and presumably final time
00:00:30
ahead of release, I told myself, I'm
00:00:32
just going to have fun with it. And so
00:00:34
when my time began, I adjusted my build
00:00:36
to my liking, asked the team ninja
00:00:38
community lead, who appropriately goes
00:00:40
by master, to teach me all the sick tech
00:00:42
that he knew, and I was off to the races
00:00:44
to go up against the biggest challenge I
00:00:46
had faced thus far pre-release, a
00:00:48
crucible.
00:00:54
It's a new type of level that features
00:00:56
extra tough enemies that chunk bits of
00:00:58
your max life every time they hit you
00:01:00
until you hit them back. Suffice it to
00:01:02
say, if my goal was to have fun, well
00:01:04
then, mission accomplished.
00:01:17
My demo didn't begin in the Crucible, so
00:01:19
I was able to work my way up to Mid's
00:01:21
challenge by first making my way through
00:01:23
a warped red light district that had
00:01:25
seemingly been transformed and twisted
00:01:27
with evil Yo-kai power. Team Ninja was
00:01:29
very generous with our builds, giving me
00:01:31
a healthy collection of highle gear with
00:01:33
any type of weapon of my choosing.
00:01:35
Wanting to try something new, I decided
00:01:37
on going with the Cestus as my main
00:01:38
samurai weapon and the single katana for
00:01:41
my ninja loadout. I immediately fell in
00:01:43
love with the Cestus. There's just
00:01:45
something so incredibly cathartic about
00:01:46
draining an enemy stamina. And then when
00:01:48
you go in for the execution, it's just
00:01:50
aggressive blunt force trauma on a
00:01:52
demon's face with a level of blood
00:01:54
splatter that can rival a Mortal Kombat
00:01:56
brutality.
00:02:00
Not only that, but I also had a skill
00:02:02
that allowed me to sit there and channel
00:02:04
all of my stamina into a single falcon
00:02:06
punch-like strike that would just
00:02:08
obliterate whatever happened to be
00:02:09
standing in front of me. The bone
00:02:11
crunching sound effects and the usual
00:02:12
Team Ninja animation smoothness only
00:02:14
enhance the satisfaction. On the other
00:02:16
side of the coin was the single katana
00:02:18
in ninja mode, and if you're a Ninja
00:02:20
Gaiden fan, this is probably going to be
00:02:22
what you want to check out. The big star
00:02:24
of the weapon in my eyes was a move
00:02:26
called the swallow slash. And if you are
00:02:28
a big Ninja fan, you probably already
00:02:31
know what that's going to look like.
00:02:32
It's a super fast dashing attack that
00:02:34
goes through enemies and can even be
00:02:36
upgraded to allow you to quickly move
00:02:38
back and forth multiple times through
00:02:40
the same enemy, just like Ryu's flying
00:02:42
swallow. It's a bit riskier in a game
00:02:44
with limited stamina and treacherous
00:02:46
terrain that could lead to instant death
00:02:48
if one were to swallow slash themselves
00:02:49
off a cliff, but it is nonetheless an
00:02:51
incredibly satisfying technique and a
00:02:53
great way to start off a fight. The red
00:02:55
light district itself was classic Neo
00:02:57
level design. Lots of barred off paths
00:02:59
that funnel you through largely linear
00:03:01
design with a handful of optional forks
00:03:03
that lead to some extra loot with a
00:03:05
healthy dose of traps and enemy ambushes
00:03:07
lying around every corner. Side note,
00:03:09
Team Ninja President Fumihiko Yasuda sat
00:03:12
down to watch me play for a bit and got
00:03:14
a kick out of how slowly and carefully I
00:03:16
entered each room. And even more so when
00:03:18
even despite all of my caution, I'd
00:03:20
still fall for one of the many traps
00:03:21
laid throughout the level.
00:03:30
The boss of this level was Takasugi
00:03:32
Shinsaku, a samurai armed with the
00:03:34
guardian spirit, a gun, and a sword. And
00:03:37
he made liberal use of all three. Like
00:03:39
most humansized Neo3 boss fights, it was
00:03:41
a tense and fast-paced battle that finds
00:03:44
that sweet spot of being just
00:03:45
predictable enough to be able to
00:03:46
identify patterns with enough variation
00:03:49
in those patterns to make the act of
00:03:50
identifying them satisfyingly
00:03:52
challenging. After defeating Shinsaku,
00:03:54
the next area was one of the new open
00:03:56
field levels I talked about in my last
00:03:58
preview. This time though, we were
00:04:00
allowed to challenge the Crucible, which
00:04:02
is basically the ultimate challenge of
00:04:03
each open field in Neo3. Entering the
00:04:06
Crucible takes you to a hellish
00:04:07
landscape where Yo-kai are all buffed to
00:04:09
deal increased damage. In addition to
00:04:11
that, if damage is taken while inside a
00:04:14
Crucible, the player will be infected
00:04:15
with life corrosion, which will
00:04:17
temporarily reduce their max health
00:04:19
until they're able to deal damage or
00:04:21
defeat enemies. Dying is another way to
00:04:23
remove the effects of life corrosion,
00:04:25
but obviously not ideal. On the plus
00:04:27
side, while inside a crucible, you'll be
00:04:29
able to use your living artifact
00:04:30
transformation more frequently since the
00:04:32
Mr. Gauge fills faster. The main
00:04:35
impression of the Crucible that I got to
00:04:36
play through was basically that it was
00:04:38
like another standard linear Neo level,
00:04:40
only meaner. Hugely damaging spike traps
00:04:43
were everywhere.
00:04:46
Lightning fast spinning blade demons
00:04:48
made running across certain paths feel
00:04:49
like trying to weep through traffic on a
00:04:51
busy street. And powerful foes weighed
00:04:53
an ambush in precarious areas where one
00:04:56
errand dodge could lead to you falling
00:04:57
to your death. Just like every other
00:04:59
time I've gotten to play Neo3, after my
00:05:01
time was up, I was left wanting more.
00:05:03
Neo3 is shaping up to be my favorite of
00:05:05
the series to date. not only through its
00:05:07
substantial improvements to combat
00:05:09
thanks to its split of samurai and ninja
00:05:11
modes, but also with the massive
00:05:13
addition of its open field levels, each
00:05:15
of which seemingly will include its own
00:05:17
separate crucible. It's a challenge I
00:05:19
eagerly anticipate taking on with my
00:05:21
personal build and progression, and one
00:05:23
that I won't have to wait terribly long
00:05:24
for as Neo3 releases on PlayStation 5,
00:05:28
Xbox Series X and S, and PC on February
00:05:31
6, 2026. For more on Neo3, don't miss my
00:05:35
last hands-on preview, as well as our
00:05:36
exclusive boss fight gameplay reveal.
00:05:38
Before we wrap this up, I'll leave you
00:05:40
with a full uninterrupted boss fight
00:05:42
against the boss of the Crucible, Nurio.
