Per Deluth News – January 16th - Minnesota’s congressional Democrats made an appearance in St. Paul Friday morning for a hearing dubbed “Trump’s deadly assault on Minnesota.” The Jan. 16 hearing, co-hosted by U.S. Reps. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., and Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., is the sixth in the “Kidnapped and Disappeared” series hosted by Jayapal and congressional Democrats, highlighting the effects of President Donald Trump’s immigration policies. “What we are witnessing right now is unprecedented,” Omar said in opening comments. “There is no modern precedent for this level of federal overreach, violence, lawlessness, carried out in the name of immigration enforcement. "This is not routine enforcement. This is not about public safety. This is not even about immigration. This is about political retribution.” The committee saw testimony from Attorney General Keith Ellison, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, and St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her — who all sued the Department of Homeland Security on Jan. 12. “Let me be clear, we're not suing because ICE is in Minnesota," Ellison said. "They were in Minnesota last year. They're in Minnesota 10 years ago. We didn't sue them then. We sued them over this activity, which is unjustified, unconstitutional, damages our state, interferes with our sovereignty. “It’s arbitrary, capricious, and damaging to all of us. That is what this lawsuit is all about.” Per Wikipedia: Ilhan Abdullahi Omar was born October 4, 1982 and is an American politician serving as the U.S. representative for Minnesota's 5th congressional district since 2019. She is a member of the Democratic Party. Before her election to Congress, Omar served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019, representing part of Minneapolis. Her congressional district includes all of Minneapolis and some of its first-ring suburbs. Omar serves as deputy chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and has advocated for a $15 minimum wage, universal healthcare, student loan debt forgiveness, the protection of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, and abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. A frequent critic of Israel, Omar supports the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement and has denounced Israel's settlement policies and military campaigns in the occupied Palestinian territories, as well as the influence of pro-Israel lobbies in American politics. Her remarks regarding Israel and the influence of pro-Israel lobbies have led to accusations of “Anti-Word”. In February 2023, the Republican-controlled House voted to remove Omar from her seat on the Foreign Affairs Committee, citing past comments she had made about Israel and concerns over her objectivity. Omar is the first Somali American in the United States Congress and the first woman of color to represent Minnesota. She is also one of the first two Muslim women (along with Rashida Tlaib) to serve in Congress. Early life and education: Omar was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, on October 4, 1982, and spent her early years in Baidoa, Somalia. She was the youngest of seven siblings, including sister Sahra Noor. Her father, Nur Omar Mohamed, an ethnic Somali from the Majeerteen clan of Northeastern Somalia, was a colonel in the Somali army under Siad Barre, served with distinction in the 1977-78 Ogaden War between Somalia and Ethiopia, and also worked as a teacher trainer. Her mother, Fadhuma Abukar Haji Hussein, a Benadiri, died when Ilhan was two. She was raised by her father and grandfather, who were moderate Sunni Muslims opposed to the rigid Wahhabi interpretation of Islam. Her grandfather Abukar was the director of Somalia's National Marine Transport, and some of Omar's uncles and aunts also worked as civil servants and educators. She and her family fled Somalia to escape the Somali Civil War and spent four years in a Dadaab refugee camp in Garissa County, Kenya, near the Somali border.
