00:00:00
Today we're going to see if Chili Pepper
00:00:02
Bird Seed actually deters squirrels. So
00:00:05
this is Wild Delights Sizzle in Heat
00:00:07
Advanced Formula Seed. Made with chili
00:00:09
peppers, a strong irritant. Says keep
00:00:12
out of the reach of children. Avoid
00:00:13
contact with eyes, nose, and skin. Wash
00:00:15
hands thoroughly after using. Squirrels
00:00:17
taste the heat. Birds don't. So with
00:00:19
something like this, it is meant to be a
00:00:21
squirrel deterrent. So it's not supposed
00:00:23
to stop every single squirrel. If they
00:00:26
made it ridiculously hot, it would be
00:00:28
dangerous. And they told me they want
00:00:30
something that like, you know, anyone
00:00:31
could put out and they're not going to
00:00:33
be scared of it. Like you should wash
00:00:35
your hands after using it, but it
00:00:36
shouldn't be crazy hot that it's going
00:00:38
to like, you know, burn your skin. So,
00:00:40
we're going to do a test with this by
00:00:41
putting some of this seed out on a plate
00:00:44
and next to it using regular bird seed,
00:00:47
putting a camera on it, and seeing which
00:00:49
one the squirrels prefer. I'm curious to
00:00:51
see if they will actually uh try the
00:00:53
chili pepper seed and not come back to
00:00:55
it. I've been told that sometimes just
00:00:56
like people, animals have different
00:00:58
tastes. So maybe one squirrel is cool
00:01:00
with it, but the rest aren't. So it
00:01:01
might be like one out of 10 or something
00:01:03
like that. I don't know. I'm curious to
00:01:04
see. So I'm going to put the two bowls
00:01:06
of seed out. I have a sign for spicy and
00:01:08
regular. We'll put a camera out. We'll
00:01:10
kind of see what the results are. So it
00:01:12
should be strictly squirrels and birds
00:01:14
that we're comparing. And I'm expecting
00:01:16
the birds to eat both seeds and the
00:01:19
squirrels to only eat the regular seed.
00:01:21
They might try the chili pepper seed,
00:01:22
but I don't think they'll be, you know,
00:01:24
eating at all. So, we'll get this set
00:01:25
up. I'm kind of excited to see how this
00:01:27
goes. And, uh, it should be some really
00:01:29
nice fall color. So, let's see how this
00:01:31
chili pepper bird seed works.
00:01:44
All right, we have our test all set up
00:01:45
right here. I also have a little water
00:01:47
dish. You know, if that seed is hot for
00:01:48
the squirrels, they might want to get a
00:01:50
drink. But the science behind this is
00:01:52
that birds don't taste the same way
00:01:53
squirrels do. Squirrels have taste buds
00:01:55
on the tongue just like we do. So,
00:01:56
they're going to taste that heat where
00:01:58
the birds aren't. So, the birds will not
00:02:00
be bothered by the heat presumably, but
00:02:03
the squirrels will. Then, they'll stay
00:02:04
away from the bird seed. So, let's see
00:02:06
what happens.
00:02:10
Right away, birds started investigating
00:02:12
the seeds. They didn't seem to have any
00:02:14
issues feeding from both types, but it
00:02:17
did seem like they went for the spicy
00:02:18
seed first.
00:03:01
Eventually, the squirrels came over and
00:03:03
checked out the seed piles. They
00:03:05
definitely seem to prefer the regular
00:03:06
seed. In fact, the first one to discover
00:03:09
it camped out there for a while and
00:03:11
shered down.
00:03:40
A few squirrels went for a taste of the
00:03:42
spicy seed, but seemed to become
00:03:44
disinterested pretty quickly. And one
00:03:46
even went right for the water after
00:03:47
trying it.
00:04:11
For the rest of the day, the squirrels
00:04:13
mostly chowed down on the regular bird
00:04:15
seed, while the birds fed from both.
00:04:17
Sometimes it felt like they even
00:04:18
preferred the hot pepper seed.
00:04:54
I took an assessment right before it
00:04:56
started to get dark and the results seem
00:04:58
pretty clear. So, it's about 4:00 and I
00:05:02
feel like this is pretty definitive. We
00:05:04
had a couple birds come right away. We
00:05:06
had blue jays, a redbellied woodpecker,
00:05:08
cardinal, and uh they did eat from both
00:05:10
of the seed piles and the squirrels
00:05:13
really dominated the regular seed and
00:05:16
they did not touch the spicy seed nearly
00:05:18
as much. There was one case in
00:05:21
particular where a squirrel tried the
00:05:23
spicy seed and then went right for the
00:05:24
water. So, it did seem like it was
00:05:26
having an effect and then later on today
00:05:28
a squirrel just camped out in the
00:05:29
regular seed. So, if you had this out,
00:05:32
it would basically be done. Like, all of
00:05:34
the sunflower seeds more or less have
00:05:35
been eaten here. If you had your spicy
00:05:37
seed out, you'd still be good for
00:05:39
another day, another couple of days
00:05:41
because the squirrels have definitely
00:05:42
been favoring this seed. So, I feel like
00:05:45
this is a super informative test. And it
00:05:47
showed pretty much what I expected. Now,
00:05:49
this isn't to say that you'll never have
00:05:51
a squirrel. That is fine with the spicy
00:05:53
seed or you won't have anything eat it,
00:05:55
but it is a deterrent. So, that's what
00:05:56
it's used for. It's not going to stop
00:05:58
every squirrel. Squirrels do have
00:06:00
different tastes, but uh this does show
00:06:02
that it does have an effect and it does
00:06:04
seemingly deter squirrels compared to a
00:06:07
regular seed mix. In order to fully test
00:06:09
the spicy seed, I left both seed plates
00:06:12
out overnight and into the next morning.
00:06:14
The birds and squirrels finished off
00:06:16
most of the regular seed pretty quickly.
00:06:18
And with the spicy seed the only option
00:06:20
left, the squirrels seem more open to
00:06:22
trying it. It still didn't seem to get
00:06:24
depleted as fast as the regular bird
00:06:26
seed did.
00:06:50
It's the next day and the squirrels do
00:06:52
seem a little more open to trying the
00:06:54
spicy bird seed. I think it's cuz
00:06:55
there's none of the regular seed left.
00:06:57
Uh it looks like they ate all of the
00:06:59
sunflower seeds. Now, there are some
00:07:01
sunflower seeds uneaten in the spicy
00:07:03
seed. So, it still is outlasting our
00:07:05
regular seed. And as we mentioned,
00:07:07
individual squirrels may not really care
00:07:09
about the spiciness. So, it's definitely
00:07:11
a deterrent. It's not going to prevent
00:07:12
all squirrels. And over time, they may
00:07:14
even develop somewhat of a taste for it.
00:07:16
It's hard to know, but it does seem like
00:07:18
it is deterring them. So, it's lasting
00:07:20
longer than a regular seed. So, my final
00:07:21
verdict on the Wild Delight Sizzle and
00:07:24
Heat seed is that it is a deterrent. So,
00:07:27
it's not going to prevent every single
00:07:28
squirrel from eating the seed in your
00:07:30
yard. You're still going to want to do
00:07:31
some squirrel proofing with squirrel
00:07:32
baffles. You know, setting your feeders
00:07:34
up smartly, but it is a thing you can
00:07:36
use to deter squirrels, and the birds
00:07:38
seem to really like it still. So, we've
00:07:39
had a lot of birds come to feed. It's
00:07:41
been cool to see the blue jays,
00:07:42
especially in the fall leaves. We had
00:07:44
the redbellied woodpecker cardinals and
00:07:46
uh you know, it doesn't seem like they
00:07:48
are bothered by the heat at all. So,
00:07:49
spicy bird seed, it's a deterrent. It's
00:07:51
not going to prevent every single
00:07:53
squirrel or other mammal from eating
00:07:54
your bird seed. But, if you want
00:07:56
something to try to keep the squirrels
00:07:57
away, it is definitely an option for
00:07:59
you. If you're interested in testing it
00:08:00
out, I'll put a link in the description
00:08:02
below. And thanks for watching. We'll
00:08:04
see you next time on Badgerland Birding.
