The driving force is often digital echo chambers in which moral outrage is escalated. Two opposing positions can be identified in the discursive debate: Proponents conceptualize cancel culture as a tool for establishing accountability, especially in power imbalances. Here, it serves as a corrective to structural inequalities and as a protective mechanism for marginalized groups outside of formal institutions. Critics, on the other hand, view the phenomenon as dysfunctional: It leads to disproportionate sanctions, creates a climate of censorship through self-censorship (chilling effects), and undermines discourse through the strategic de-contextualization of statements. Psychologically, two key mechanisms operate: Virtue signaling – the performative display of moral superiority to generate status within referential groups. Groupthink – the cognitive homogenization in digital collectives that suppresses dissenting opinions and cascades moral outrage. From an economic perspective, cancel culture generates significant reputational and transaction costs, while simultaneously establishing new power structures in the attention economy.
