00:00:00
You may have heard that Marjorie Taylor
00:00:01
Green is resigning from Congress. Okay,
00:00:03
so things are chaotic in Washington and
00:00:05
another politician is leaving office.
00:00:07
Why is this a big deal? Well, if you
00:00:09
look carefully at what actually
00:00:10
happened, you see something much bigger
00:00:12
than a simple politician stepping down.
00:00:15
This is a deeper problem in American
00:00:16
elections that affects every voter,
00:00:18
every district, and every future
00:00:20
candidate. And that problem has almost
00:00:23
nothing to do with Green herself and
00:00:25
everything to do with how our primary
00:00:27
system actually works.
00:00:30
>> [music]
00:00:32
>> I stood for women who were raped when
00:00:34
they were 14 years old. And the [music]
00:00:36
president that I fought for for 5 years
00:00:38
called me a traitor for that.
00:00:40
>> Marjorie Trader Green. Uh I don't think
00:00:43
her life is in danger. I don't think
00:00:45
frankly I don't think anybody cares
00:00:47
about her.
00:00:48
>> Here's what we know from confirmed
00:00:49
reporting in Green's own public
00:00:50
statements. She described Congress as
00:00:53
toxic and dysfunctional. She blamed
00:00:54
petty power plays inside her own party.
00:00:57
She said independent thinking is
00:00:58
punished and that the political
00:01:00
environment has become hostile and
00:01:01
exhausting. So that's why she's
00:01:03
resigning in early January. Those are
00:01:05
her words, not speculation. We also know
00:01:07
that the area she represents, this
00:01:09
section northwest of Atlanta is one of
00:01:11
the safest Republican districts in the
00:01:13
entire country. So she wasn't at risk of
00:01:16
losing a general election. Her voters
00:01:18
weren't pulling away from her, and no
00:01:20
Democrat was going to flip her district.
00:01:22
The pressure Green faced came from
00:01:24
inside her own party, not from the
00:01:27
voters in Georgia's 14th district.
00:01:29
Political scientists have been warning
00:01:30
for decades that in most of the country
00:01:33
today, the primary is the real election.
00:01:36
Because of polarization, geographic
00:01:38
sorting, and safe districts, more than
00:01:40
90% of House seats are essentially
00:01:42
decided long before November. If you win
00:01:45
the primary, you win the seat. And if
00:01:48
you lose the primary, it doesn't matter
00:01:49
how popular you are in the general
00:01:51
election, you are done. This means the
00:01:54
real power in American politics isn't in
00:01:56
the hands of electorates. It's
00:01:57
concentrated inside the small,
00:01:59
hyperengaged group of activists, donors,
00:02:02
and party loyalists who dominate the
00:02:04
primary process. And when you look at
00:02:06
MTG's situation through that lens,
00:02:08
everything becomes clear. In the months
00:02:10
before her resignation, she was locked
00:02:12
in public fights with Republican
00:02:14
leadership. She was openly clashing with
00:02:16
Speaker Mike Johnson. And most
00:02:18
importantly, she was disagreeing with
00:02:19
Donald Trump over the release of the
00:02:21
Epstein files. Trump called her a
00:02:24
traitor and signaled he was open to
00:02:25
backing a primary challenger against
00:02:28
her. None of these things are
00:02:29
speculation. They're all on the record.
00:02:31
Now, does that mean she resigned because
00:02:33
of Trump? Well, she didn't say that, and
00:02:35
no credible outlet is reporting that as
00:02:37
the only reason. But taken together,
00:02:40
these facts show the environment she was
00:02:42
operating in. A situation where internal
00:02:44
party pressure matters far more than the
00:02:46
general constituents. And I think this
00:02:48
is a real problem. In a primary dominant
00:02:51
system, the people who can make or break
00:02:52
your career aren't the hundreds of
00:02:54
thousands of voters in your district.
00:02:55
They're a few thousand highly motivated
00:02:58
primary voters, a handful of party
00:03:00
influencers, and a short list of
00:03:02
national figures who can raise or shut
00:03:04
down your fundraising with a single
00:03:06
statement. And Green herself actually
00:03:08
described that pressure in her
00:03:09
resignation letter. Look at this. She
00:03:11
said she refused to be a battered wife
00:03:14
to the party leadership. She talks about
00:03:15
hyperartisan loyalty tests and a
00:03:18
Congress where independent thinking is
00:03:20
punished. Whether you love her or hate
00:03:22
her, that's an extremely revealing thing
00:03:24
for a sitting member of Congress to say
00:03:26
on her way out the door. So no matter
00:03:28
your thoughts on MTG, this is a much
00:03:30
bigger problem than just her. It affects
00:03:32
Democrats in safe blue districts. And it
00:03:35
affects other Republicans in safe red
00:03:36
places. It affects anyone who holds a
00:03:39
seat where the primary is competitive,
00:03:41
but the general election is
00:03:42
predetermined. And when [music] primary
00:03:44
voters control whether you stay in
00:03:46
office, you end up answering to a very
00:03:48
small, very intense slice of the
00:03:51
electorate. this issue, the fact that
00:03:52
primaries voted by a few people are
00:03:55
starting to carry a lot more weight than
00:03:57
the general election should concern us
00:03:59
more than any one political personality
00:04:01
because competition is the heart of a
00:04:03
free society. As Katherine Gail and
00:04:05
Michael Porter argue, politics is an
00:04:07
industry and like any other industry,
00:04:09
markets work because of competition and
00:04:12
ideas improve because of competition.
00:04:14
Politics should work the same way. But
00:04:16
when primaries become loyalty tests
00:04:18
instead of broad elections, the
00:04:20
competition disappears. There are a few
00:04:22
ways we could fix this. For example,
00:04:24
open primaries in more states could give
00:04:26
more voters a voice. And ranked choice
00:04:28
systems are popular with a lot of people
00:04:30
who want voting reform, like me. And
00:04:32
pretty much anything that makes for
00:04:34
easier and safer ballot access reduces
00:04:37
the power of party machines. In too many
00:04:39
districts today, the re-election isn't
00:04:41
in November. It's in a low turnout
00:04:44
contest months earlier. And it's
00:04:46
directed by activists and insiders who
00:04:48
most of us have probably never heard of.
00:04:50
If we care about genuine representation,
00:04:53
about competition, and about a political
00:04:55
system that reflects more than just loud
00:04:57
faction, then the Green resignation is
00:04:59
something we should all be talking
00:05:00
about. It should be a warning because
00:05:03
the system is telling us very clearly
00:05:05
who holds the real power. And right now,
00:05:07
it's not regular voters like you and me.
