00:00:06
two years ago we began a journey to live a life in perfect harmony with nature a life
00:00:11
caring for animals growing fruit creating building and learning to live off the land
00:00:21
and in this time nature has taught us more than we could have ever imagined
00:01:31
we spent our childhood growing up here in the mountains exploring rainforests caring
00:01:39
for orphaned lambs
00:01:47
planting trees
00:01:50
and harvesting fruit our days were spent sliding down banana plantation shoots climbing trees
00:02:00
learning to build
00:02:10
and swimming all year long let go
00:03:21
we looked up to animal friends at every moment and grew up alongside our sheep watching them
00:03:32
grow from young lambs to leaders of the flock and having babies of their own
00:03:59
and watching for animals grow and in the process growing ourselves
00:04:42
when we finished school we left for the city to follow paths that we always imagined a
00:04:46
university education a career or opportunities that we didn't have in the bush
00:04:57
we always knew that we'd return home as soon as we could but losing our dad and a whole
00:05:01
range of issues meant that this came sooner than we thought
00:05:12
we felt a pull to return home and stand alongside our mum on this journey
00:05:27
we needed to connect with the land and our story and understand our place within the
00:05:31
grand and beautiful system of
00:05:32
nature
00:05:33
there have been hardships and trials and times where it all felt like too much
00:06:13
but then in a special moment like watching the last sun highlight the clouds or when
00:06:20
a duck bobs her head to tell you she loves you everything all makes sense
00:06:27
living in harmony with the rhythms of nature has taught us so many things instead of following
00:06:32
schedules and rosters we are able to follow the patterns of the sun and the seasons
00:07:03
pulling invasive weeds when the soil is soft after the rain gardening in the first morning
00:07:07
light building and working hard while it's cool
00:07:13
and having a break and playing the stream when it's hot
00:07:15
with our work on the farm there is always something that needs doing
00:07:30
but these endless jobs have mostly taught us the importance of stepping back and being
00:07:37
still sitting under a tree in the shade
00:07:40
floating in the dam or doing things for no reason but the joy that they bring us
00:08:36
the seasons and the weather have taught us to not treat our lives so seriously
00:08:40
to celebrate the rainy season that fills the creeks and nourishes the garden and to appreciate
00:08:49
the sun whose light fosters the fruit trees to blossom
00:09:08
we have learnt to see joy in every moment and task that we do like the daily bed routine
00:09:13
for all of the animals when the sun is setting and the light is soft and all of the animals
00:09:17
are ready for bed and so cuddly and grateful for their cozy night pens
00:09:27
it doesn't feel like a job at all but rather the highlight of our day when we connect with
00:09:31
our animal friends and reflect on a day of hard and rewarding work
00:09:37
or when we are caught out in the field in a tropical rainstorm and the heavy drops of
00:09:53
rain cover our body and instead of rushing inside we dance in the freedom and beauty
00:09:59
of the moment
00:10:40
to live in one place our whole lives we have begun to understand the time and shifting
00:10:45
seasons through touch sound and smell
00:10:51
in each beam of light and the colour of its shadow each new growth and dying leaf and
00:10:56
bird call we're able to read the time of day and the time of year
00:11:06
we know what fruit trees are about to ripen and which trees need pruning the seeds that
00:11:11
need to be sown and the weeds that need pulling the three o'clock butcher bird that comes
00:11:17
and plays in the pond the kookaburras that sing at dawn in the autumn are the currawongs
00:11:22
that call in the rain the black cockatoos that come with that rain dancing and gliding
00:11:27
through the valleys
00:11:32
living in nature has taught us to be able to adapt to the circumstances around us like
00:11:37
a seedling who blows in the wind but grows stronger and bigger because of it
00:11:49
the animals have taught us more than anything else they have taught us to love and to be
00:11:54
loved while we care for them they return that care in so many ways
00:12:20
they have taught us that there's purpose for everything even their poop which fertilizes
00:12:25
and helps the plants to
00:12:26
thrive
00:12:27
we grew up alongside our sheep and feel so honored to witness and be a part of the beautiful
00:12:48
kinship that the flock holds our childhood pet lamb grew up with us and became the beautiful
00:12:54
leader of the flock she recently passed away she was our oldest and most gentle sheep with
00:13:02
the softest eyes she was so old that she had absolutely no teeth left we were sad to lose
00:13:10
her but one of the things we have learnt from living on the land is how much death is a
00:13:14
part of the cycles of life our winter garden goes to seed and dies back
00:13:22
in the heat only to regrow later she will go back to the earth just as those before
00:13:28
us have done she will live on in her children and the fruit trees and flowers and grasses
00:13:34
that grow her children aphrodite and lanky boy are twins and also best friends they do
00:13:43
everything together and are the sweetest naughtiest cuddliest sheep one of the twins aphrodite
00:13:49
who has grown to be the leader of the flock in her mom's absence had her first lamb this
00:13:54
year and we watched the whole birth after she birthed her beautiful daughter her twin
00:14:00
brother lanky boy walked over to her and gave his sister a big kiss to show his support
00:14:04
after he gave the newborn lamb kiss also the love the support and the harmony of the flock
00:14:13
is inspiring reminding us always to love and work as a team
00:15:09
each animal has so much love and it shows in the most beautiful ways
00:15:15
magnolia the goat has taught us resilience she came from another farm where her mom had
00:15:20
twins and only enough milk for one kid meaning magnolia had to scavenge any food that she
00:15:24
could get drinking from other mothers before they realized that she wasn't their kid we
00:15:30
took her in as a little baby and she thrived making friends with all of the animals and
00:15:34
exploring the farm for weeds she is now the boss of everyone as she leads the flock up
00:15:39
into the mountains each day to snack on all of the plants bee the duck had problems with
00:16:04
waterproofing her feathers and she's always been dirty and smaller than the other ducks
00:16:08
on wet days she stays in her pen to protect herself and we've tried everything to help
00:16:12
her waterproof despite this she is always the fastest and most adventurous duck always
00:16:18
buzzing around the garden like a bee her resilience makes us so proud and excitedly she had started
00:16:26
molting and her oils are beginning to work again she's getting fluffier each day
00:17:53
when a sheep becomes sick we have learned to understand the minerals they are lacking
00:17:56
to overcome their illness we have learnt to understand the signals of sickness and adapt
00:18:02
their diet this has made us realize that our nutrition comes from the soil and the importance
00:18:08
of soil health in supporting our own health we learnt that it's all connected our soils
00:18:19
health our animals health and our own health we're all a part of this beautiful ecological
00:18:25
system where humans are equally as important as the dirt and microbes that live in it
00:18:33
this was a big realization for us that soil health and biodiversity is so important in
00:18:37
protecting the environment we learnt that farming sustainably is not good enough and
00:18:43
by farming regeneratively we can improve the soil and give more to the land than we take
00:18:48
leaving it in a better state for the generations to come it's a big task but this realization
00:18:54
fuels us that we must give more to the land than we receive and leave it better than we
00:18:58
found it
00:19:12
we spent months building and crafting a treehouse just for the joy of it we wanted to use our
00:19:17
own hands to create and build so we educated ourselves by practice and resilience this
00:19:23
was so different to any education that we had previously had and we learned so much
00:19:27
in this slow observational learning we taught ourselves to build from bamboo cutting each
00:19:32
piece by hand and tying it all together a big storm came and the whole thing fell into
00:19:37
the water we realized that the screws holding the treehouse were too strong and that as
00:19:42
the trees moved in the wind they snapped under the pressure we realized that we need to adapt
00:19:47
to the wind and rebuild it so that as each tree sways it sways with it we learnt to have
00:19:53
the courage to try and fail from something and learn so much in the journey learning
00:19:58
to sway in the process of learning
00:20:15
the farm has been threatened by bushfire twice now and we have learnt to appreciate the land
00:20:20
and nature so much we have learnt to appreciate the rainy days as much as the sunny ones because
00:20:27
without water there is drought we have learned the power and community as everyone came together
00:20:32
to save the farm
00:20:36
from this we also learnt to find joy in all things even hardship because of the drought
00:20:42
no rain fell on the mango flowers and the trees fruited so heavily
00:20:51
most importantly we have learnt the need for change in the world because as the climate
00:20:55
crisis worsens these threats are so much more common
00:21:03
we learnt to respect and acknowledge the Original Custodians of the land that we live on and
00:21:07
understand the importance of Indigenous knowledge of farming and caring for the land
00:21:13
this is the land of the Arakwal and Midjungbal People of the Bundjalung Nation and Indigenous
00:21:18
land management techniques have protected this rainforest and its ecosystems for all
00:21:22
of time for this we are so thankful and we have so much to listen and learn
00:21:44
we realized that nature really can give us all that we need our diet follows the weather
00:21:49
and seasons so closely by eating whatever is in season we found so much joy in the freshness
00:21:55
and incredible flavor of eating local seasonal food
00:22:07
but we also realize that eating seasonally minimizes plastic and the inefficiency of
00:22:21
transporting food long distances we preserve and store whatever fruit veggies or nuts are
00:22:26
abundant
00:22:27
and eat and cook with them in whatever ways we can
00:22:35
it's so amazing that nature gives us refreshing juicy fruit full of nutrients that we need
00:22:39
in the summer months that winter brings immune boosting roots like turmeric and the autumn
00:22:45
brings nuts and vitamin c filled fruits like citrus and kiwi
00:22:58
gardening growing and permaculture practices have taught us that there are always solutions
00:23:06
we have learnt that we can avoid aphids by planting nasturtiums
00:23:11
that there are never too many slugs there are just not enough ducks or that goats are
00:23:20
not just the best companions for cuddles but also regenerative farmers who enjoy eating
00:23:24
invasive species
00:23:29
we have learnt that everything has meaning and each small thing has a purpose in the
00:23:32
larger system that the worms in the soil break down organic matter to feed the plants the
00:23:38
plants feed us and the animals and the birds spread the seeds the ducks eat the pests and
00:23:44
the sheep and goats eat the weeds the rain feeds the soil and the sun feeds the leaves
00:23:51
we have realized the simplicity of the role that we play within this system working within
00:23:56
the structure alongside the animals the plants and the seasons caring for one another and
00:24:01
respecting the power and beauty of nature this journey has been so enriching and we
00:24:07
are very grateful to be learning from it with you all we are so excited to see what happens
00:24:12
next thank you to our patrons who have believed in us so much joining the story of the farm
00:24:18
and this big animal family we're very very grateful
00:24:21
thank you

Description:

Two years ago, we began a journey to learn to live a life in perfect harmony with nature. A life caring for animals, growing food, creating, building and learning to live off the land. And in this time, nature has taught us more than we could have ever imagined. https://www.patreon.com/motherthemountain We spent our childhood growing up here in the mountains, exploring rainforests, caring for orphaned lambs, planting trees and harvesting fruit. Living in harmony with the rhythms of nature has taught us so many things. It has taught us to be still and calm, to love, and to give more than we take. It has taught us to to care for the land and each other. We live and farm on the land of the Arakwal and Minjungbal People of the Bundjalung Nation and these practices of regenerative living, agriculture and permaculture owe their roots and theories to Indigenous knowledge — they have been practiced by Indigenous People around the world for so many years. We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the Country we live on, and recognise their continuing connection to the land and waters. We thank them for protecting this rainforest and its ecosystems since time immemorial. https://www.facebook.com/unsupportedbrowser https://www.facebook.com/unsupportedbrowser Anastasia's Instagram: https://www.facebook.com/unsupportedbrowser Julia's Instagram: https://www.facebook.com/unsupportedbrowser Music in this video by Indira Elias: https://indiraelias.com/ Soon Enough: https://open.spotify.com/track/4QKolUKksjGHh3r6q15oks
