00:00:19
I first saw Stanley Kubrick's science
00:00:23
fiction epic 2001 a Space Odyssey in the
00:00:26
summer of that year I can't recall what
00:00:29
instigated this but I remember renting
00:00:31
the VHS from Blockbuster and being
00:00:34
shocked by the G rating needless to say
00:00:36
I wasn't prepared for it
00:00:38
my first watch went about as well as it
00:00:41
could for a thirteen-year-old the
00:00:43
lengthy sequences without sound or
00:00:45
dialogue bored me the purposefully
00:00:47
static images were tedious and the last
00:00:50
15 minutes left me confused to say the
00:00:53
least in the coming years the film
00:00:55
wouldn't leave my mind I tell myself no
00:00:58
you watch that you didn't like it but
00:01:00
that didn't matter
00:01:01
I found myself drawn to it like an
00:01:04
addict to a drug they just can't quit
00:01:06
with the availability of DVD increasing
00:01:09
I got my hands on a copy and with this
00:01:11
viewing I gleaned much more the deeper
00:01:14
themes and the implications Kubrick was
00:01:16
trying to communicate became clearer a
00:01:19
few years later I watched the film a
00:01:21
third time and it finally struck all the
00:01:23
right chords with me 2001 is without a
00:01:26
doubt one of the most revered films ever
00:01:29
made but it isn't without detractors the
00:01:31
most common criticisms regarding the
00:01:34
film are generally similar to mine on
00:01:36
the initial viewing Kubrick's pacing is
00:01:38
glacial the edits are methodical the
00:01:41
frames are painstakingly symmetrical and
00:01:44
the sound design is often so relaxing it
00:01:47
can put you to sleep when 2001 is viewed
00:01:50
through the lens of entertainment it's
00:01:52
understandable that some will find it an
00:01:54
overhyped bore but this film isn't just
00:01:57
mere amusement meant to pass the time
00:01:59
it's an allegory for all of humanity and
00:02:03
it's proved as shockingly accurate
00:02:04
warning for our meddling tendencies
00:02:07
publishing a dissertation on 2001 today
00:02:10
feels a tad unnecessary given that
00:02:13
searching the phrase 2001 a Space
00:02:15
Odyssey analysis Garner's over 1 million
00:02:17
search results fans critics and scholars
00:02:20
have been discussing this film for
00:02:22
decades there's no shortage of
00:02:24
information about it on the web so odds
00:02:26
are much of this has been said already
00:02:28
but seeing as this month is its 50th
00:02:31
anniversary and then
00:02:33
is one of my most requested reviews I've
00:02:35
got a lot to say but this will not be an
00:02:37
explained video I assure you there's
00:02:40
plenty of those on this platform already
00:02:42
of course I'll discuss my thoughts on
00:02:44
the meaning of certain sequences but
00:02:46
this isn't meant to be a scene-by-scene
00:02:48
analysis of what every goddamn thing
00:02:50
means because this quote from Roger
00:02:53
Ebert has stuck with me in regards to
00:02:54
this film audiences don't like simple
00:02:57
answers I guess they want the monolith
00:02:59
to stand for something well it does it
00:03:02
stands for a monolith without an
00:03:03
explanation it's the fact that man can't
00:03:06
explain it that makes it interesting
00:03:08
if Kubrick had explained it perhaps by
00:03:10
having some little green men from Mars
00:03:12
lower it into place would that have been
00:03:15
satisfactory does everything need an
00:03:17
explanation some people think so I
00:03:19
wonder how they endure looking at the
00:03:22
Stars yes under the surface mm one story
00:03:25
could be explained in many different
00:03:27
ways our evolution our discovery of
00:03:30
tools how we instantly turned that tool
00:03:32
into a weapon how we've become so
00:03:35
powerful that we've lost control of our
00:03:37
tools and how in space
00:03:40
we're like infants once more learning to
00:03:43
walk eat and even use the bathroom in
00:03:45
this new environment
00:03:47
Kubrick gave us much to appreciate in
00:03:49
every wonderous frame but that has
00:03:52
always been secondary for me it's really
00:03:54
the feeling I get while watching this
00:03:56
film that outshines everything else 2001
00:03:59
is the closest experience I've had to
00:04:02
feeling hypnotized Kubrick's editing is
00:04:05
methodical yes but it's really the sound
00:04:08
design the use of richard strauss's also
00:04:11
sprach zarathustra the now iconic
00:04:13
composition that plays at integral parts
00:04:16
or even the breathing sounds in the
00:04:18
silent depths of space
00:04:19
supposedly recorded by Kubrick himself
00:04:22
all put me in a trance from the
00:04:25
beginning of the film that images of a
00:04:27
desolate early African landscape
00:04:28
immediately locked me into a sense of
00:04:31
wonder and awe through a quick series of
00:04:33
scenes we understand that early man is
00:04:35
preyed on and lives in fear before long
00:04:39
the mysterious monolith appears
00:04:40
terrifying them at first before
00:04:43
eventually enticing them not long after
00:04:46
we see one of them
00:04:47
fiddling around with a pile of bones
00:04:49
discovering that it can be used as a
00:04:51
tool soon enough some of them are walking on
00:04:53
two legs scaring away another group even
00:04:56
killing one of them his tool has become
00:04:59
a weapon he throws it into the air and
00:05:01
perhaps the most famous edit in history
00:05:04
occurs we jumped forward drastically in
00:05:06
time observing space travel but what are
00:05:09
we cutting to a spaceship a satellite a
00:05:12
nuclear weapon
00:05:14
opinions vary with even Kubrick himself
00:05:16
never confirming many figures behind the
00:05:19
film's production have said that it is a
00:05:21
nuclear device of some sort
00:05:23
if so Kubrick's cut from man's first
00:05:25
primitive weapon to its most advanced
00:05:28
and deadly is profound
00:05:30
these effects still astonish fifty years
00:05:33
later and similar to what George Lucas
00:05:35
accomplished nine years after Kubrick
00:05:37
they will be timeless forever hell
00:05:39
they're still conspiracy theories
00:05:41
surrounding Kubrick's involvement in
00:05:43
faking the footage of the moon landing
00:05:45
that's got to be the ultimate compliment
00:05:48
for visual effects artists your work is
00:05:50
so good NASA probably called you up to
00:05:52
fabricate the moon landing soon were on
00:05:55
a Jupiter mission with Dave Frank and
00:05:57
Hal 9000 while the story here becomes
00:05:59
more straightforward it's really the
00:06:01
implications Kubrick explores that feel
00:06:04
most unique pal 9,000 for instance tests
00:06:07
Frank while playing chess with him in a
00:06:09
way cheating when Frank fails to realize
00:06:12
this how the sides the crew isn't up to
00:06:14
the task of this mission and takes over
00:06:16
our creations have finally overpowered
00:06:19
us all our knowledge and advancement for
00:06:22
what to have a machine control our lives
00:06:25
how right Kubrick was there has been
00:06:29
much discussion about the final 20
00:06:31
minutes Dave appears to enter a Stargate
00:06:34
or wormhole arriving in a room the room
00:06:37
appears to be a sterile cage of sorts as
00:06:40
if something wishes to observe him in a
00:06:42
series of cuts he gets older before
00:06:45
finally the monolith appears again Dave
00:06:49
extends his hand to it like
00:06:50
Michelangelo's famous painting of Adam
00:06:53
reaching for God while Kubrick was
00:06:55
notoriously tight-lipped he did have
00:06:58
this to say about 2001
00:07:00
on the deepest psychological level the
00:07:02
film's plot symbolizes the search for
00:07:04
God and it finally postulates what is
00:07:07
little less than a scientific definition
00:07:08
of God the film revolves around this
00:07:11
metaphysical conception and the
00:07:12
realistic hardware and the documentary
00:07:14
feelings about everything were necessary
00:07:16
in order to undermine your built-in
00:07:18
resistance to the poetical concept when
00:07:21
Dave is reborn as the Starchild we're
00:07:23
seeing a new dawn an entity that doesn't
00:07:26
need our technological devices to
00:07:28
survive in this uncharted space just as
00:07:31
the film opened with ancient life the
00:07:33
film closes with new life with rich
00:07:36
possibilities ahead of it most people
00:07:39
who sit down in a movie theater have a
00:07:41
wall built around them it's a well
00:07:43
deserved cage of skepticism if it's
00:07:46
their goal to connect emotionally with
00:07:48
these viewers or impart a deeper message
00:07:51
it's the filmmakers job to carefully
00:07:53
break down that wall before their film
00:07:56
ends while not every filmmaker
00:07:57
accomplishes this Kubrick certainly did
00:08:00
with 2001 its warnings to us have been
00:08:03
proven accurate for ever timely and
00:08:05
strikingly relevant still today but
00:08:07
beyond the metaphors its technical
00:08:10
achievement is still aw inspiring truly
00:08:13
2001 is the closest I've come to
00:08:16
experiencing literal hypnotism from a
00:08:19
film that sensation will never be
00:08:22
recreated
