00:00:00
- Hello, wonderful people.
00:00:01
It's Genevieve and my goal here on this channel
00:00:03
is to teach you all about illustration and design.
00:00:06
So if you're new, make sure to subscribe
00:00:08
so you don't miss any of the weekly videos
00:00:10
and so that you can join our wonderful creative community.
00:00:13
Now today we're going to be drawing a really simple
00:00:16
but quite stylized and groovy portrait.
00:00:19
And throughout the video I'm going to show you,
00:00:20
how you can customize it to resemble more either yourself
00:00:23
or a person that you like or honestly, whoever.
00:00:26
So I'm going to give you options for skin tones,
00:00:29
facial features, accessories, clothing, hairstyle,
00:00:33
a bunch of different things.
00:00:34
So grab your drawing tools and let's get started.
00:00:38
And just an FYI, Waffle is extra crazy today,
00:00:41
so if you hear some howling or some whistling
00:00:43
in the background, you'll know why.
00:00:46
(bell chimes)
00:00:50
Now, as you can see as usual here,
00:00:51
I'm using Procreate for this demo,
00:00:53
but this is a very simple tutorial
00:00:55
in the sense that we're not gonna use any fancy features.
00:00:58
So you can follow along with really any software
00:01:00
of your choice as long as you're comfortable
00:01:01
with basic tools like brush, eraser and layers,
00:01:07
maybe masks as well, although I'm going to give you
00:01:09
opportunities or alternatives if you don't want
00:01:12
to use masks or if you don't have masks in your software.
00:01:15
So the first thing you can customize in this piece
00:01:16
is the canvas size and the ratio of your canvas.
00:01:19
Here I'm going with something square that I could use
00:01:21
as a profile picture and I'm going
00:01:23
with 3000 by 3000 pixels.
00:01:25
But you can do something completely different.
00:01:27
That is totally up to you.
00:01:28
Just make sure the canvas is not too small.
00:01:30
Otherwise when you zoom in to draw your details,
00:01:32
everything's going to look super pixelated
00:01:34
and you're not gonna be able to draw those details.
00:01:36
So again, in my case, 3000 pixels by 3000 pixels
00:01:40
is what I'm going for.
00:01:41
Now to input the piece, we're actually going to start
00:01:43
by importing a paper texture that we're going
00:01:44
to put on top of everything.
00:01:46
It's going to give us a little bit of that grit
00:01:48
and it's going to really bring the piece together
00:01:50
from the get-go.
00:01:51
Now for that, you can use any paper texture
00:01:53
of your choice, of course.
00:01:54
If you don't have one, don't worry.
00:01:56
I included a free one that you can download
00:01:58
in the description below.
00:01:59
So feel free to pause the video, go ahead and download that.
00:02:01
It is part of my Procreate jumpstart kit,
00:02:03
which is called Procreate Jumpstart Kit,
00:02:05
but really there's a bunch of alternative
00:02:06
for different softwares as well,
00:02:08
especially for the paper texture, it's just an image,
00:02:10
so it's gonna work no matter what software you're using.
00:02:13
So go ahead and download that.
00:02:14
And once you have it in your device,
00:02:15
we're just going to import it as a layer
00:02:17
in front of everything.
00:02:18
So to do that in Procreate, you can just go
00:02:20
in the wrench icon menu here at the top
00:02:23
selecting either insert a file or insert a photo
00:02:26
depending on where you saved the texture.
00:02:28
And if you need more instructions onto how to import
00:02:31
the texture unzipping the folder and all those things,
00:02:33
I'm going to link a blog post in the video description
00:02:36
that you can follow.
00:02:37
It's very simple, it's very quick.
00:02:38
I'm personally going to go with the second paper texture.
00:02:41
You can go with the first, it doesn't really matter.
00:02:44
And once it is in your file, we're just going to resize it
00:02:48
so that it covers the entire page.
00:02:50
And in order to only keep the texture
00:02:52
and not the opacity of the paper itself,
00:02:54
we're going to apply a blending mode to this texture.
00:02:57
So go ahead and open your layer panel
00:02:59
and locate the opacity slider,
00:03:01
which is also usually where the blending modes are.
00:03:03
So in Procreate, you can just tap on the little end
00:03:06
next to the check mark.
00:03:07
And from there we're going to select
00:03:08
the blending mode, multiply.
00:03:12
And multiply is probably the most basic blending modes.
00:03:15
If you have blending modes in your software,
00:03:16
it should be in there.
00:03:18
And if you don't have blending modes,
00:03:19
honestly it's not a problem.
00:03:21
You could just forego the texture altogether
00:03:23
or you could put it instead of above everything,
00:03:25
below everything.
00:03:27
So your elements would not have textures themselves,
00:03:30
but at least the background would have
00:03:31
a little bit of texture.
00:03:32
Now, once we've done that, we're gonna go ahead
00:03:34
and just rename this layer to paper texture.
00:03:38
(bell chimes)
00:03:41
So the first step here is just going to be working
00:03:42
on the face itself, which is going to be pretty simple
00:03:45
because we're going to use very basic shapes and forms.
00:03:49
So go ahead and create a new layer.
00:03:51
If you're using a blending mode on your texture,
00:03:53
put that new layer below the texture.
00:03:55
But if you're just using it as a background texture,
00:03:58
put everything for now on above the texture
00:04:01
and rename that new layer to Face.
00:04:05
Now, if you want to use the exact same colors
00:04:07
as I will be using within this video,
00:04:09
I included a free color palette.
00:04:11
It is in the same bundle as the paper texture.
00:04:14
So you can go ahead, pause the video
00:04:15
and download that if you'd like.
00:04:17
Otherwise, I'm always going to add the hex code here,
00:04:19
add the top right of the video, so you could take that code
00:04:21
and just input it in your color selectors.
00:04:24
Now obviously here, this is a customizable video
00:04:26
so you can pick your own colors as well,
00:04:27
and I actually highly encourage you to do that
00:04:29
because it is a good way to practice studying,
00:04:32
getting out of the comfort zone,
00:04:33
getting out of the step-by-step videos
00:04:35
and doing things a little bit more on your own.
00:04:38
Now as you can see here on the left hand side,
00:04:40
we have a few different options for skin tones.
00:04:42
You could go again with something completely different.
00:04:44
I'm going to pick something that is, I would say,
00:04:47
closer to my skin.
00:04:48
So the second option right here.
00:04:50
But again here, pick whatever feels right for you.
00:04:53
And here as usual, I'm going to suggest
00:04:54
a few different brush options that you can use
00:04:56
to follow along this video.
00:04:58
So I'm going to suggest free for clear brushes
00:04:59
that you can use and get really great results.
00:05:02
I'm also going to do my best to suggest brush alternatives
00:05:05
if you're working in a different software
00:05:07
or at least ways to find brush alternatives
00:05:09
if you're working in different software.
00:05:11
And I'm also going to suggest brushes
00:05:13
from my ultimate illustration bundle.
00:05:15
Now these brushes are not essential at all,
00:05:18
but they're the brushes I use when I'm working
00:05:20
on the illustrations, not for YouTube.
00:05:22
I made them for myself.
00:05:23
I really like them and people were asking about them.
00:05:26
So I sell them now.
00:05:27
So if you wanna check them out,
00:05:28
they will be linked in description below
00:05:29
and there's always a special promo code
00:05:31
for the YouTube people.
00:05:32
But again, they are not essential at all.
00:05:35
And for the first few steps here,
00:05:37
we're is going to start with the most basic
00:05:39
round brush we have.
00:05:41
So that could mean going, if you are working
00:05:43
with free Procreate brushes, the airbrushing pack
00:05:46
that comes with the app.
00:05:48
And picking something like the hard brush,
00:05:51
making sure the opacity of your brush
00:05:52
is up to a hundred percent, of course.
00:05:54
Now if you're working in a different software,
00:05:56
just the most basic round brush you have
00:05:59
that doesn't have texture or feathering
00:06:01
or anything weird about it, just a round brush.
00:06:04
That's it.
00:06:05
If you do have my illustration bundle,
00:06:08
you could go in the texture pack
00:06:11
and pick the base round brush.
00:06:14
And the brush size doesn't matter at all here,
00:06:17
cause we just want to draw a very rough oval
00:06:23
that we can then fill in to create the base shape
00:06:26
of the head.
00:06:30
Now we're going to refine this shape,
00:06:31
first by adding a bit of a divot in the front
00:06:34
to help us create the brow bone and the cheek.
00:06:36
So just go ahead and select your eraser
00:06:38
and set it to the exact same brush you using for painting.
00:06:41
So that could be the hard brush if you're working
00:06:43
with free Procreate brushes
00:06:45
or if you're working with my illustration bundle,
00:06:48
which I'm struggling to find right now.
00:06:50
There it is, the base round brush.
00:06:53
And all you're going to do is just erase
00:06:55
a little bit in words, roughly in the middle of the oval.
00:07:11
So at this stage we have something that looks
00:07:12
like a kidney bean.
00:07:13
Now on the opposite side of where we added this divot,
00:07:16
we're going to add the ear and you can align the ear
00:07:19
roughly in line with that divot.
00:07:30
And here we have our second option of customization,
00:07:33
the first one was the skin tone.
00:07:35
Now here we're going to customize the jaw.
00:07:37
So you could keep it pretty round like this if you want,
00:07:40
which is going to make your character look
00:07:41
very, very cute and quite young.
00:07:44
You could have a bit more of a square jaw
00:07:46
if you wanted your character to look more masculine.
00:07:48
You could have a more rectangle jaw
00:07:51
if you again wanted more masculine character.
00:07:54
You could have just still a very soft jaw,
00:07:57
but longer if you want.
00:07:59
Still a character that it looks feminine
00:08:00
but a little bit older.
00:08:03
Or you could have what I'm going to draw,
00:08:05
which is a slightly pointy jaw.
00:08:32
Okay, so from there we're going to draw the neck
00:08:34
and the shoulders.
00:08:35
And here I'm going with a very thin long neck.
00:08:38
But again, that is something you can customize,
00:08:40
especially if you're drawing a more masculine character,
00:08:42
you might want to go with a wider neck,
00:08:44
but if you want to have the same style as me,
00:08:46
we're going to start the back of the neck right in line
00:08:48
with where the ear connects with the jaw
00:08:51
and the front of the neck is going to fall
00:08:53
right behind the chin.
00:08:56
So starting with those guides
00:08:57
and then just drawing one flowy curve.
00:09:16
So feel free to pause the video here
00:09:17
if you need more time to play with this space shape.
00:09:20
Otherwise we're going to move on straight
00:09:22
to adding a bit of shadows and textures and facial features.
00:09:26
(bell chimes)
00:09:29
Now say shadows, but we're going to keep them
00:09:31
very simple here. We're just going to separate the head from the neck.
00:09:36
So for that, go ahead and create a new layer
00:09:38
above the face layer and rename that new layer to Shadows.
00:09:44
Now if you do have masks in your software,
00:09:46
we're going to make our job a little bit easier
00:09:48
by applying the shadow layer as a clipping mask
00:09:51
so that whatever we draw on the shadow layer
00:09:53
stays within the base shape.
00:09:55
If you do not have masks or if you don't know
00:09:57
how to use them in your software,
00:09:59
you're just going to need to be a little bit more precise
00:10:01
and try to stay within the lines or be quite crazy
00:10:04
and then come back once you're done with your shadows
00:10:06
and erasing whatever spills out of the shape.
00:10:09
So if you're working in Procreate,
00:10:10
the way to apply the shadow layer as a clipping mask,
00:10:13
is very simple, just tap on the layer
00:10:15
and then select clipping mask from the menu.
00:10:18
And in terms of color here,
00:10:19
if you're using my color palette,
00:10:21
you could go with just one shade darker.
00:10:24
So I was using this skin tone here,
00:10:26
so I'm just gonna go with the one right underneath.
00:10:28
If you are using the darkest one,
00:10:30
what you can do is just going in the classic editor here
00:10:33
and manually making the skin tone darker.
00:10:36
And to make the piece a little bit more rich
00:10:38
and interesting, we're going to start building textures
00:10:40
within the illustration itself, so not just a texture layer.
00:10:44
And so for that we're going to use a brush
00:10:46
that has texture within itself.
00:10:48
Now it doesn't need to be a fancy brush at all.
00:10:50
If you're working with Procreate,
00:10:52
I recommend going in the charcoal pack
00:10:54
that comes with the app.
00:10:55
So charcoal's right here and picking something
00:10:58
like the willow charcoal.
00:10:59
Honestly all of the options here except for the burnt tree
00:11:02
could work really well.
00:11:03
I just think the willow charcoal is my personal favorite.
00:11:06
If you're working a different software,
00:11:08
something that has charcoal and name should work really well
00:11:11
or something that you can see has a bit of grit to it.
00:11:16
If you are working with my illustration bundle though,
00:11:18
we're going to go in the texture pack that comes with it
00:11:20
and we're going to pick the basic texture brush.
00:11:24
And so from there you're just going to connect the chin
00:11:26
to the ear to create the bottom part of the jaw.
00:11:35
And from there we're going to create a gradient
00:11:36
from this line towards the bottom of the neck
00:11:39
or well the middle of the neck I guess.
00:11:41
And so for that you have a few different options.
00:11:43
If you have an apple pencil or a pencil
00:11:45
that has tilt sensitivity,
00:11:47
you can just tilt your pencil
00:11:48
and just like with a regular pencil,
00:11:50
draw with the side of it,
00:11:51
which is going to allow you to have a bigger size brush
00:11:54
in creating this sort of gradient.
00:11:56
If you do not have that tilt sensitivity,
00:11:58
just increase the size of the brush.
00:12:00
You should be using a small to medium brush at this point,
00:12:02
essentially anything that allows you to have a bit
00:12:04
of a bigger shape, so that you can create your gradient.
00:12:46
So essentially here all we're doing
00:12:47
is we're using that shadow over most of the neck.
00:12:50
Kind of add an angle as you can see
00:12:52
in a little bit of the top of the shoulder in the back.
00:12:55
(pen scribbling)
00:12:57
That's it.
00:12:59
Now once you've done that, if you want you can go back
00:13:01
to your eraser and just erase along the jaw
00:13:04
to clean up that line a little bit.
00:13:10
Great, so we're essentially going to do the same thing,
00:13:12
but this time we're a red or a pink depending
00:13:14
on your base skin tone, to add cheeks, nose,
00:13:17
and other details that are really going
00:13:19
to help the character look more alive and warm.
00:13:23
So go ahead and create a new layer above your shadows layer
00:13:27
and rename that one to, I'll just go with Red.
00:13:32
Now if clipping masks are available to you,
00:13:34
once more, just go ahead and apply that layer
00:13:36
as the clipping masks.
00:13:37
If not, you can always come back and just erase
00:13:39
what is spelling at the end, it doesn't matter.
00:13:42
Now if you're working with my color palette,
00:13:43
as you can see here, I included a couple different options.
00:13:46
I think I'm actually going to add another one,
00:13:48
cause that one is definitely not dark enough
00:13:49
for a dark skin tone like this.
00:13:52
So if you're working with a darker skin tone,
00:13:54
just pick one of the bottom options.
00:13:56
If you're working with a lighter skin tone,
00:13:57
you can experiment with one of the two at the tops,
00:13:59
totally up to you.
00:14:00
I'm gonna go with the middle one right here.
00:14:02
And as you can see, it is a kind of a red
00:14:05
that has a little bit of orange in it.
00:14:07
So it's a bit more of a salmony red
00:14:09
than just a pink, like a barbie pink red.
00:14:13
You can see the saturation is pretty much in the middle
00:14:15
and the brightness is a little bit more bright
00:14:17
than the middle itself.
00:14:20
And here we're going to stick with the same textured brush
00:14:22
we've been using and we're going to draw big circles
00:14:25
for the cheeks.
00:14:26
And here you're gonna go with a medium to big size brush.
00:14:29
The exact size again doesn't matter at all
00:14:32
or you definitely want to have something a little bit bigger
00:14:34
than what we had before to draw details.
00:14:36
And you're going to align the top of your circles
00:14:38
with the little divot we have in the head.
00:14:41
And then the bottom of the circle is going to be pretty much
00:14:43
in the middle of this bottom section.
00:14:47
So kinda like this.
00:15:17
I'm realizing I think mine are a little bit too dark.
00:15:19
So I'm actually gonna go ahead and just select the option
00:15:22
above in the color palette and just drop it on top.
00:15:27
And yeah, that's much better.
00:15:31
Now from there, we're also going to use this color
00:15:32
to color the top of the ear and the top of the shoulders.
00:15:36
So just very loosely adding a gradient
00:15:38
on top of those elements.
00:16:02
And we're also going to start mapping out the nose
00:16:04
and the arch of the eyebrow.
00:16:06
And for now we're going to keep these elements super simple.
00:16:09
So we're going to start with just a bit of a triangle
00:16:11
for the nose that we might come back and play with later
00:16:13
as we add the facial features themselves.
00:16:15
And so we're going to start the top of the triangle,
00:16:17
again, just in line with that little divot,
00:16:19
pretty close to the right cheek.
00:16:25
And we're just going to bring it down
00:16:27
a little bit above the middle of that right cheek.
00:16:31
Bringing it back inside
00:16:34
and then fill it in with a bit of a gradient.
00:16:39
And then we're going to create essentially the same triangle
00:16:41
but flipped and above for the eyebrow
00:16:45
or the brow bone I should say.
00:16:46
So you can just lift up your line like this
00:16:49
and then create a gradient that goes a little bit towards
00:16:51
the top right.
00:17:07
Great, now I know it looks crazy right now,
00:17:09
so we're going to just start adding the facial features
00:17:12
to make it look a little bit less insane.
00:17:14
So go ahead and create a new layer
00:17:16
above all the layers you have for the face.
00:17:18
It doesn't need to be a clipping mask.
00:17:20
And we name that new layer to Facial Features.
00:17:25
Now here we're going to start I guess with the nose
00:17:27
because we already have it pretty much mapped out.
00:17:29
And in terms of color for the nose,
00:17:30
go ahead and color pick in the area
00:17:33
where the cheeks make the shadow.
00:17:36
So you get a bit of a blend of those two colors.
00:17:38
And then make that a little bit darker.
00:17:44
In here, you can stick with the same brush if you want.
00:17:46
That would work well.
00:17:47
Or if you wanna have a bit more precision
00:17:49
but still a bit of texture, try to find a pencil brush.
00:17:53
So if you're working with free Procreate brushes,
00:17:54
that would mean going in the sketching pack
00:17:57
that comes with the app right here
00:18:00
and picking something like the HB or 6B pencils
00:18:03
but would work really well.
00:18:04
I think it's going to depend mostly on your canvas size.
00:18:06
If you have a very big canvas,
00:18:08
you might need to go with the 6B pencil
00:18:10
because it is a little bit thicker.
00:18:11
If you do have my illustration bundle though,
00:18:14
we're actually going to pick in the texture pack
00:18:17
that comes with it.
00:18:18
I keep looking for it today.
00:18:19
There it is.
00:18:22
I guess we're gonna go with the sketching brush.
00:18:24
I was about to say outlines,
00:18:25
but we're going to go with the sketching brush
00:18:27
to have a little bit more softness in our lines.
00:18:31
And in terms of the brush size here,
00:18:32
you're just going to have to test honestly
00:18:34
because it's going to depend on the brush you're using,
00:18:37
your canvas size as well as just your personal preference.
00:18:40
Now I'm gonna go with something that,
00:18:41
as you can see is pretty thick but not huge.
00:18:46
And here we're just going to start with a line
00:18:48
for the bridge of the nose.
00:18:49
And that line can be super curvy if you have a pointy nose
00:18:53
or it could be pretty flat if you want to have,
00:18:55
well, a more flat nose.
00:19:04
And then same thing with the bottom of the nose.
00:19:05
You could have a very long line if you want to draw
00:19:08
a big nose, a pretty small line if you want a small nose.
00:19:12
Really here it's entirely up to you.
00:19:22
And I feel like my pink or red
00:19:23
is coming a little bit too high.
00:19:25
So I'm actually going to set my eraser to the same brush
00:19:27
I used to add those pink elements.
00:19:31
So either a charcoal brush
00:19:32
or if you have my illustration bundle,
00:19:34
the basic texture brush.
00:19:36
Or actually you know what, there's an eraser shape
00:19:38
within that bundle. So eraser shape.
00:19:40
And I'm just going to gently erase the red
00:19:42
that is on the nose side, so not on the eye side, really
00:19:45
the nose side.
00:19:53
Now going back on the facial features layer,
00:19:55
we're going to move on to adding a little bit of details
00:19:57
in the ear with the same color while we have it.
00:20:00
And here I'm gonna keep it very simple.
00:20:01
I'm just going to draw this kind of little squiggle
00:20:03
right here.
00:20:06
Now from there we're going to move on to a darker version
00:20:09
of whatever color we have right now.
00:20:10
That is going to be almost black but not quite.
00:20:13
So just going back to your color selector
00:20:15
and manually bringing it down,
00:20:17
until, as you can see the brightness
00:20:19
is really, really low and the saturation
00:20:21
is still roughly in the middle.
00:20:23
And we're going to use that color to draw the eyes.
00:20:25
Now the eyes, you could draw a completely different style
00:20:27
if you want, but I'm going to keep it very simple
00:20:30
and peaceful by drawing these very soft U shapes.
00:20:33
And it's going to be very easy to place them.
00:20:35
Again, we're just going to align them
00:20:37
with the divot we have in the head.
00:20:55
As you can see, the one on the right
00:20:56
is almost touching the edge of the face.
00:20:59
And then the one on the left is towards the front
00:21:01
of the cheek.
00:21:02
So it is not in the middle of this left section,
00:21:04
it is a little bit more towards the nose.
00:21:08
If you want to make your character
00:21:09
look a little bit more feminine,
00:21:10
what you can do is thicken the outside edges
00:21:13
of these lines and add some simple lashes.
00:21:24
Now I'm just going to add three of these triangles
00:21:27
for the lashes, the biggest one or longest one at the top.
00:21:30
And then getting slightly smaller, the closer we get
00:21:33
to the middle of the lash or the lash line.
00:21:40
Doing the same thing on both sides.
00:21:46
And then we're going to draw the mouth.
00:21:48
Again, the mouth is something you can customize.
00:21:50
I'm going with a super simple closed mouth.
00:21:53
Now no matter which style of mouth you want to draw,
00:21:55
we're going to place it a little bit above
00:21:57
the bottom of the cheeks
00:21:59
and a little bit more towards the left side
00:22:01
than the right.
00:22:11
And here if you wanna have a bit of lipstick
00:22:13
on your character or reinforce the lips,
00:22:15
you could just go ahead and color pick the same color
00:22:17
you used for the cheeks and all of that.
00:22:19
So the pink or the red and just go above the mouth
00:22:23
and draw a bit of a semi-circle like this.
00:22:27
That would become lips.
00:22:30
You could also draw a rounded M shape
00:22:32
if you wanted for the lips to have that cupid bow
00:22:35
action going on.
00:22:40
But again, as I mentioned, I'm just going to draw
00:22:41
a simple line for a closed mouth for my character,
00:22:44
that's what I prefer.
00:22:46
But I'm going to add a bit of a underline
00:22:48
to map out the lower lip.
00:22:50
And for that I'm just going to color pick
00:22:52
the color I use for the shadows.
00:22:54
So right here.
00:22:56
And I'm just going to add that little secondary line
00:22:59
right here.
00:23:04
Great, now from there we're going to add some eyebrows,
00:23:07
super important, we can still stay
00:23:09
on the same facial features layer.
00:23:11
And here I do not know why but I decided to go
00:23:14
with dark blue hair for this character.
00:23:15
So I'm going to use the same dark blue
00:23:17
for the eyebrows as well.
00:23:19
You could obviously customize a piece by going
00:23:21
with a completely different hair color of course.
00:23:24
If you wanna do that, I recommend playing
00:23:25
with bright colors.
00:23:26
So if for example, if you'd wanna draw a character
00:23:28
that has more ginger or red hair,
00:23:31
going with really a bright orange,
00:23:34
if you wanna go with a character that has blonde hair,
00:23:35
you could try going with a light blue.
00:23:38
So try experimenting with something that is not natural,
00:23:40
that is super crazy and colorful,
00:23:42
but would match maybe a little bit more the brightness
00:23:45
or the darkness of the hair.
00:23:47
Now I'm personally going to use this blue right here
00:23:49
at the top of the blue column in the color palette.
00:23:52
As you can see, it is pretty much milled the way
00:23:54
in terms of saturation.
00:23:56
Now that is one thing that if you do wanna
00:23:57
pick your own color, I recommend keep it consistent,
00:24:00
the saturation level.
00:24:01
So in that case going with whatever hue you want.
00:24:04
So orange, green, blue, whatever,
00:24:06
but middle of the white in terms of saturation.
00:24:08
In here, we're gonna stick with the same brush,
00:24:10
we're just going to zoom in and add some eyebrows.
00:24:12
Again, that is something you can customize.
00:24:14
You could have any kind of eyebrow shape you want,
00:24:16
any kind of arch, any kind of flatless,
00:24:19
any kind of thickness, width, that is something
00:24:23
that you can really easily change
00:24:25
to make your piece your own.
00:24:26
I'm just gonna go with a cartoonish version
00:24:28
of my own eyebrows.
00:24:30
So pretty flat in the front or the middle I would say.
00:24:33
And then just kind of arching down
00:24:35
into a little bit of a tail on these sides.
00:24:36
And we'll go to align the eyebrows this time
00:24:39
with the, well the brow bone that we drew with
00:24:42
the pink or the red.
00:24:43
So you can just start by quickly mapping out the shape.
00:24:45
Now the inside of the brow, so you can align them
00:24:47
with the inside corner of the eyes.
00:24:50
And on the right side, the outside is going to connect
00:24:53
with the side of the face.
00:25:06
And on the left side, the outside is going
00:25:07
to just be a little bit longer than the outside of the eye.
00:25:20
And then once you have the base shape,
00:25:21
you can manually fill them in.
00:25:22
I do recommend adding a few little strokes
00:25:24
on the inside just to make it look a little bit more
00:25:26
like hair.
00:25:27
But otherwise you can fully fill in the inside.
00:25:30
If you are enjoying this tutorial so far,
00:25:31
please consider giving the video a like
00:25:33
and subscribing to the channel if you haven't already.
00:25:36
Now I know everyone on YouTube is asking you to do that,
00:25:38
but believe it or not, it is a fantastic way
00:25:40
to help your favorite creators
00:25:42
because it essentially just tells YouTube
00:25:44
to take the video and show it to more people.
00:25:47
So thank you for helping.
00:26:21
And because we drew all the facial features
00:26:24
on a separate layer, then the skin and the pink
00:26:27
and all those things, it's going to be very easy
00:26:29
to move them around if you're not super happy
00:26:32
with how things are looking right now.
00:26:33
So for example, I feel like this eyebrow,
00:26:36
I don't know, it's a weird angle.
00:26:37
So I might just go ahead making sure
00:26:39
my facial features layer is the one that is selected.
00:26:42
And with any kind of selection tool
00:26:44
such as this one here in Procreate,
00:26:47
drawing a selection around the facial feature element
00:26:49
that I wanna move.
00:26:51
And then using an error tool to maybe rotate it,
00:26:56
move it, I don't know, resize it
00:27:01
really anything that is needed
00:27:03
to make the facial feature look good to you.
00:27:05
So feel free to pause the video here,
00:27:07
take all the time you need to play around
00:27:09
with your facial features until
00:27:10
you're really happy with them.
00:27:11
And then we're going to meet up in the next step,
00:27:13
which is going to be adding maybe freckles
00:27:15
and a little bit of highlights on the face
00:27:17
before starting with the hair.
00:27:18
Great, so once you're happy with the facial features,
00:27:20
as I mentioned, we're just going to come back in,
00:27:22
add some freckles if you'd like and maybe some highlights
00:27:25
to make the face pop a little bit more.
00:27:28
Now I'm going to start with the freckles,
00:27:29
cause it's very simple.
00:27:30
We're just going to create a new layer
00:27:32
below the facial features but above everything else.
00:27:36
Renaming that layer to Freckles
00:27:39
and also applying it as a clipping mask.
00:27:41
And this is something you can do
00:27:42
even if you don't have freckles
00:27:44
just to add texture to your character.
00:27:46
In that case you could pick a random color
00:27:48
like the hair color or another bright color
00:27:51
and just add a bit of that texture on the face.
00:27:53
Again, not necessarily to look like freckle,
00:27:55
but just to amp up the visual signature of the piece.
00:27:59
Now in my case I do have freckles,
00:28:00
so I'm going to just pick a brown,
00:28:02
which is going to be the same one I use
00:28:04
for the nose and ear.
00:28:06
So I'm just gonna color pick that.
00:28:08
And here you can either keep the same brush
00:28:10
you've been using to draw the facial features
00:28:12
and just manually come in and draw the freckles.
00:28:16
But if you do have my illustration bundle,
00:28:18
there is a freckles brush because,
00:28:20
I really like adding freckles.
00:28:22
So you could just pick that brush,
00:28:24
just experiment with the size a little bit
00:28:26
before you get started.
00:28:29
That's a personal preference, which size you use here.
00:28:33
And then just add the freckles, under the eyes,
00:28:36
on the cheeks,
00:28:37
(pen tapping)
00:28:40
maybe a little bit on top of the nose
00:28:42
or on the bridge of the nose I guess.
00:28:45
And then back on the other cheek.
00:28:47
So you're drawing this W-shape essentially
00:28:50
over the face.
00:28:53
Now if you're feeling a bit extra here,
00:28:54
you could also go in your blending modes
00:28:57
and just scroll through the list
00:28:58
and see if there's something that you like.
00:28:59
Again, it doesn't need to look like realistic freckles,
00:29:01
so you could have bright freckles,
00:29:03
you could have colorful freckles.
00:29:05
Really it's just a case of scrolling through the list
00:29:07
and seeing there's something that you like.
00:29:09
I would recommend avoiding going with red freckles
00:29:11
cause that might look a little bit more like pimples,
00:29:13
although you could have pimples if you want
00:29:15
in your character, but I'm personally going to try
00:29:17
and avoid that.
00:29:22
Something bright honestly could look really fun.
00:29:24
But I'm personally gonna go with,
00:29:27
I think multiplied but with a bit of a lower capacity.
00:29:34
Yeah, I'm happy with that.
00:29:37
And actually I'm going to add a few
00:29:38
on the shoulders as well.
00:29:40
Why not?
00:29:45
There we go.
00:29:47
And the last thing we're going to do before moving
00:29:49
onto the hair, is going to be adding some highlights
00:29:51
onto the face to really make it pop like I mentioned.
00:29:54
So go ahead and create a new layer
00:29:55
above all of those clipping mask we have
00:29:59
apply as a clipping mask as well.
00:30:01
So it should be under the facial features layer
00:30:03
but above everything else.
00:30:06
And rename that layer to Lights.
00:30:09
And here all you're going to do is color pick
00:30:12
the color you use for the face
00:30:14
and make it really, really bright and desaturated.
00:30:17
Now I'm not gonna add the xcode here
00:30:18
cause it's really going to depend
00:30:20
on what you've been working on,
00:30:21
but we're looking for something almost fully desaturated
00:30:25
and almost fully bright, but not quite.
00:30:29
And here you're just gonna go back to whichever brush
00:30:31
you've been using to add the facial features.
00:30:33
So a pencil brush or the sketching brush.
00:30:40
And we're just going to add a highlight
00:30:41
on the bridge of the nose,
00:30:43
one on the right side of the face
00:30:45
and then a few dots on the cheeks and maybe the shoulders.
00:30:48
Again, just to make the piece pop.
00:30:50
So it's nothing realistic, but it's really going
00:30:52
to bring everything to life.
00:31:00
So again, just one small line on the front of the nose.
00:31:06
Woo.
00:31:08
Sorry about that.
00:31:09
(Genevieve chuckles)
00:31:29
And then a few highlights on the cheeks
00:31:31
and the shoulders potentially.
00:31:33
So I'm going to go with three highlights per cheek,
00:31:35
but you could just draw one or none at all.
00:31:40
So three slightly different sizes as you can see.
00:31:51
And I'm going to do the same thing on the shoulders.
00:32:07
(bell chimes)
00:32:09
Okay, so now that we have the face,
00:32:11
we're ready to draw the hair.
00:32:12
And this is another element that you can very
00:32:14
easily customize to either match your own hair
00:32:17
or someone else's hair
00:32:18
depending on who you're drawing.
00:32:20
And the main thing to keep in mind here,
00:32:22
is we are not going to consider the hair
00:32:24
as being a bunch of individual strengths.
00:32:26
We're going to consider the hair
00:32:28
as just the one main shape, that it is.
00:32:31
So the length and is it straight, is it wavy,
00:32:35
is it curvy, is it coily?
00:32:36
What kind of texture the hair has.
00:32:38
And so here try to picture the hairstyle
00:32:41
that you want to draw.
00:32:42
And try to picture how it would look on a Lego character.
00:32:45
So you know there's that flat piece of plastic
00:32:47
that looks like a little bit of helmet.
00:32:48
Just try to see how that would look
00:32:50
and then that's exactly what you're going to draw.
00:32:52
One thing I would say though here is,
00:32:54
even if you're drawing straight hair,
00:32:55
try to add a little bit of movement to it.
00:32:57
So just the slightest wave,
00:32:58
otherwise it's going to look very, very flat
00:33:01
and still and it's not going to work super well
00:33:04
with the style of the illustration,
00:33:05
which is much more fluid and groovy, I guess.
00:33:09
Now no matter which hairstyle you're drawing,
00:33:10
we're all going to create a new layer
00:33:12
above everything we have that is related to the face.
00:33:15
And we're going to rename that new layer to Hair.
00:33:18
I know what a surprise.
00:33:19
And here we're going to pick the same color
00:33:21
we've been using for the eyebrows.
00:33:23
So you can either color pick it or I remember in my case
00:33:26
it was this one right here in the color palette.
00:33:29
And we're going to stick with the same brush
00:33:31
that we've been using for the facial features.
00:33:33
So a pencil brush or a sketching brush
00:33:35
if you're working with my illustration bundle.
00:33:37
So I'm just gonna show you real quick the outlines option
00:33:40
that you could use depending on I guess the level of curls
00:33:43
that you have in the hair that you want to draw.
00:33:44
So if you wanna draw straight hair, like I mentioned,
00:33:46
just try to add this slightly, this little bend in it
00:33:49
just so it's not fully flat.
00:33:51
Something like this, depending on the length of course.
00:33:54
If you're drawing wavy hair, which is what I'm going
00:33:56
to be drawing, we're going to go with a little bit more
00:33:59
of a S kinda shape in the outline.
00:34:03
If you want to draw curly hair,
00:34:05
you're really going to accentuate that S shape.
00:34:08
So it's still going to be an S shape
00:34:09
but quite a bit tighter.
00:34:12
And if you want to draw coily hair here,
00:34:14
we're actually going to go with more of a cloud shape.
00:34:17
So you know when you're draw clouds,
00:34:19
you're drawing this kind of shape.
00:34:20
Well that's what we're going to use
00:34:21
for the outline of the hair.
00:34:23
Again, depending on the shape and the size
00:34:24
and the hairstyle, but using always
00:34:26
that kind of cloud shape.
00:34:28
So again, like I mentioned,
00:34:29
I'm personally gonna go with wavy hair,
00:34:31
so I'm just going to draw very loose S shapes.
00:34:35
And as you can see my hair is quite long
00:34:37
so I'm going to just draw them right to the bottom
00:34:40
of the screen. But you could have a completely different length of course.
00:34:43
As you can see I recommend going first with the sides,
00:34:47
then maybe mapping out the insides.
00:34:49
So if you wanna have hair coming over the shoulders,
00:34:52
in my case I'm just going to pretend it's all behind.
00:34:54
So I'm just going to draw a line
00:34:56
that essentially follows the shape of the shoulder.
00:35:13
And the right side of the head
00:35:14
because the head is in front of the hair,
00:35:16
we're definitely just going to follow the shape of the head.
00:35:19
So that's quite easy.
00:35:40
Then you're going to follow essentially
00:35:42
the same shapes you use for the outsides,
00:35:44
bring it towards the top of the hair and the head
00:35:48
leaving a little bit of a gap.
00:35:49
So you're not gonna connect it like that,
00:35:51
that's going to make the hair look really flat.
00:35:53
You're just going to bring it a little bit above
00:35:56
the shape of the head itself.
00:36:23
Now the forehead is something again,
00:36:24
you can customize a lot because you could have,
00:36:27
what is it called, like a fringe moment.
00:36:29
You could have split in two parts like a curtain bangs,
00:36:33
you could have kind of like what I'm going to be drawing,
00:36:35
which is similar to what I have
00:36:36
a part that is just slightly to the side.
00:36:38
And then you have kind of a few strands of hair
00:36:40
that fall in front of the face.
00:36:42
So really here experiment, just remember again
00:36:44
we're not going with a lot of hair strands,
00:36:46
we're just going with the basic general shape.
00:36:48
So in my case here what I'm doing
00:36:49
is bringing the hair pretty much to the top of the head.
00:36:54
And I'm going to draw one big swoop
00:36:56
that is going to fall above the ear.
00:37:02
And then just a bit of a detailed hair strand
00:37:04
poking out like this.
00:37:18
Then connecting the bottom of the ear.
00:37:21
And one thing I always like to do on my characters
00:37:23
is just to help separate the ear from the head
00:37:25
is actually drawing this little U-shape,
00:37:28
like this, which would be kind of this part of the hair.
00:37:30
I know you don't see it that strongly,
00:37:32
especially on female characters,
00:37:34
but I always draw it and that's part of my style.
00:37:36
So feel free to add it if you want
00:37:37
or just leave it if you don't.
00:37:40
Otherwise, when you have a full completely closed outline
00:37:43
of the hair, you can just color drop your color
00:37:45
and fill in the hair silhouette.
00:37:48
Now since we are working with a brush that has texture,
00:37:50
you might need to adjust the threshold
00:37:52
if especially if you're working per grit.
00:37:54
And the way to do that is just hold your pencil
00:37:56
on the screen when you drop the color
00:37:58
and move it towards the right to reduce the threshold
00:38:01
or towards the left to increase the threshold.
00:38:04
So the goal here is to find the moment
00:38:06
right before the color fills in the entire screen.
00:38:08
So in my case, 80%.
00:38:12
And then of course you can come back in
00:38:13
and refine the shape.
00:38:14
I feel like I made the top of the head so flat
00:38:17
and then the left side so flat as well.
00:38:18
So I'm just gonna come back in
00:38:20
and play with that a little bit.
00:38:22
(balloon pops)
00:38:23
And with that it is time for the secret password.
00:38:25
So if you've watched this fun video,
00:38:26
please go ahead and let me know which color you are using
00:38:29
for the hair.
00:38:30
And as you may know, the secret password is a game
00:38:32
that we play here on the channel
00:38:33
and all of the long form step-by-step illustration
00:38:35
tutorials I hide either a secret password
00:38:38
or a question for you to find
00:38:39
and then answer in the comments.
00:38:41
And believe it or not, the secret password
00:38:43
is really helpful for me because it gives me
00:38:45
a lot of insight to how to edit and paste my videos better,
00:38:48
which helps me create better tutorials for you.
00:38:51
So again, if you watch this file,
00:38:52
just let me know which color are you planning on using
00:38:54
for the hair and then we're going to keep going.
00:39:25
And if you do want to add some hair strands
00:39:28
on the very outside of the hair,
00:39:29
you could do it at this stage, keeping it very simple.
00:39:33
So I might add just a little one here,
00:39:35
poking out of this curve.
00:39:39
To make the piece flow a little bit better
00:39:41
and then to tie in that loose strands
00:39:43
that otherwise is the only one that is loose.
00:39:45
So maybe adding one here and maybe another one
00:39:48
on the other side just to balance it out a bit.
00:40:03
Now from there we're going to add a bit of volume
00:40:05
to the hair and for that you have a few different techniques
00:40:07
that you can use depending on the hairstyle
00:40:09
that you're drawing.
00:40:10
But no matter the hairstyle,
00:40:11
we're all going to create a new layer
00:40:13
above the layer we have so far,
00:40:14
so that we can apply it as a clipping mask
00:40:16
just like we did for the shadows onto the face and the neck.
00:40:20
So a new layer above the hair,
00:40:23
renaming that new layer to Shadows,
00:40:27
applying that layer as a clipping mask
00:40:29
onto the hair layer so that it stays within the hair shape
00:40:33
and going with a darker version
00:40:35
of whatever hair color you are using.
00:40:37
So if you are working with the same dark blue
00:40:39
that I'm using, we're going to pick this one right here
00:40:41
in the color palette.
00:40:42
As you can see it's still pretty much milled away
00:40:44
in terms of saturation, but it is really,
00:40:46
really, really dark.
00:40:49
And here we're going to go back to the charcoal brush
00:40:52
or whichever brush we were using for these kind of shadows
00:40:56
and rough details.
00:40:58
So in Procreate, if you were working with free brushes,
00:41:00
that meant going in the charcoal pack
00:41:02
and picking the willow charcoal.
00:41:05
If you were working a different software,
00:41:06
any brush that either had charcoal in name
00:41:08
or just a really interesting texture that you liked,
00:41:11
was your ticket to success here.
00:41:14
And if you do have my illustration bundle,
00:41:16
again, we were working with the basic texture brush.
00:41:20
And here the goal is going to be adding a shadow
00:41:22
behind the neck and the shoulders
00:41:23
just to make the face pop even more.
00:41:26
But that shadow is going to depend on the hairstyle
00:41:28
that you're drawing.
00:41:29
So if you're drawing hair that is either straight or curvy,
00:41:32
you're going to draw those shadows using the same shapes
00:41:35
you use for the outlines of the hair,
00:41:37
but just this time focusing it on the middle.
00:41:39
And you are going to try to keep those shadows pretty crisp.
00:41:42
So that's what I'm going to do for myself.
00:41:43
So I'm just going to show you an example real quick here.
00:41:46
So I might just follow this hair strand right here
00:41:49
and draw another bit of a hairs curve
00:41:52
(pen scribbling)
00:41:53
and then manually fill in this entire section
00:41:55
to have a bit of the texture.
00:41:56
Now if you're drawing curly or coilly hair,
00:41:59
having this sharp of an edge doesn't really look right
00:42:03
for the hairstyle.
00:42:04
So what I recommend doing instead is going
00:42:05
with a much bigger size of your brush
00:42:08
and creating a gradient instead
00:42:11
from the, again, the side of the neck
00:42:13
towards the outside of the hairstyle.
00:42:19
So it would look a little bit more like this.
00:42:26
Now again, because I'm drawing wavy hair,
00:42:28
I'm gonna go with a straight edge,
00:42:29
but just draw whatever you need for your own character.
00:42:46
And here I kind of have a swoop
00:42:48
that in my mind is falling in front
00:42:50
of this part of the hair.
00:42:52
So I'm just going to zoom onto that
00:42:53
and add a very crisp line, right below the swoop.
00:42:58
And then just adding a bit of a gradient
00:43:00
just to help add again a bit of volume to the hair.
00:43:04
Great, now from there we're going to add
00:43:06
even more details to the hair.
00:43:08
We're still not going to draw
00:43:09
the hair strand texture itself,
00:43:11
but we're going to draw I don't know,
00:43:14
a handful of hair strand per side
00:43:15
just to make the hair a little bit less flat and boring.
00:43:19
So go ahead and create a new layer above the shadows,
00:43:22
rename that one to Hair Details.
00:43:25
And again, if you have clipping mask,
00:43:27
go ahead and use it on this hair details layer
00:43:30
so that we stay within the hair shape.
00:43:31
If you don't, not a big deal,
00:43:33
you can just again come back at the end
00:43:35
and erase whatever is poking out
00:43:37
or just focus on staying within the lines.
00:43:39
And here we're gonna go with a lighter version
00:43:42
of whatever hair color we've been working with.
00:43:44
So if you are using my color palette,
00:43:45
we're going to go with this blue right here
00:43:48
at the very bottom of the blue column,
00:43:50
which as you can see is the exact same hue.
00:43:52
It is still pretty much middle of the way
00:43:54
in terms of the saturation,
00:43:55
but it is quite a bit brighter.
00:43:58
In here, we're going to go back to the brush we use
00:44:00
for the facial features.
00:44:01
So a pencil brush or the sketching brush
00:44:03
if you have my illustration bundle
00:44:06
and you're going to just test the size,
00:44:07
so it is similar to what you use for the nose,
00:44:09
the eyes and the ears.
00:44:11
It really doesn't need to be the exact same
00:44:13
but it should be pretty similar.
00:44:16
And here it you're just going to draw out
00:44:17
little hair strands that are going to match
00:44:19
the outlines that you have.
00:44:20
Except if you're drawing coily hair,
00:44:22
you don't want to draw these little cloud shapes,
00:44:24
although you could, I recommend instead here
00:44:26
coming back in and drawing spirals.
00:44:32
Now there's really no right or wrong way to do this here,
00:44:34
so feel free to experiment.
00:44:36
If there was one thing I would say though
00:44:37
is you do not want to overdo it.
00:44:39
So less is more here.
00:44:49
And I say you know, match the line
00:44:51
to the outlines of the hair,
00:44:53
but you can mix and match honestly my hair,
00:44:56
well it's not really like that today.
00:44:57
It's quite flat today, cause it's dry
00:44:58
but the bottom has a bit more ringlets
00:45:01
than just the top, which is really flat,
00:45:03
cause, again it's dry.
00:45:05
You could go back in for example
00:45:07
and draw, yes these little S curves,
00:45:09
but add a few little ringlets in there, just for fun.
00:45:35
Maybe drawing a bit of a zigzag for the parting
00:45:38
if that helps, if you have one at least.
00:45:51
So feel free to pause the video here
00:45:52
if you need more time to play around with the hair shape.
00:45:54
Again, it should be very simple, so don't agonize over it.
00:45:57
And when you're ready, we're going to meet up
00:45:59
in the next chapter, which is going
00:46:00
to be adding accessories and clothing.
00:46:03
(bell chimes)
00:46:06
Okay, so the goal here is not to overpower the character.
00:46:09
We are going to add a bunch of groovy, colorful shapes
00:46:14
in front and behind the character,
00:46:15
which is going to hide a lot of those shoulders
00:46:18
that we have going on.
00:46:19
So the idea is really not to come back in
00:46:21
and draw a lot of precise clothing here.
00:46:24
It is just to maybe customize
00:46:26
and personalize your piece even more.
00:46:28
So for example here, I have this rabbit necklace
00:46:30
which I really love.
00:46:32
So I could come back in and just draw
00:46:33
a very simplified version of that rabbit necklace
00:46:36
on my character.
00:46:37
If you have a pair of earrings that you wear all the time,
00:46:40
you could come back in and draw them.
00:46:42
If you have a shirt with a neckline
00:46:44
that is very typical to you,
00:46:46
you could go ahead and draw it.
00:46:47
But no matter which element you're drawing,
00:46:49
one thing that is really important
00:46:50
is to draw it in white or a very bright gray.
00:46:54
I'm going to give you the exact color in a second.
00:46:56
So that it doesn't compete too much
00:46:57
with all the colorful blobs we're going to add
00:46:59
in the next chapter.
00:47:00
So go ahead and create a new layer above
00:47:02
everything you have relating to the character
00:47:05
and rename that new layer to Accessories.
00:47:09
Now if you have a texture in the background,
00:47:11
just go ahead and color pick anywhere honestly,
00:47:13
you're gonna get some sort of a pale gray
00:47:15
that would work really well.
00:47:16
And as you can see here, it is a neutral gray
00:47:19
in the sense that the saturation is fully down
00:47:21
and it's almost white but not quite.
00:47:23
So very, very, very bright.
00:47:26
And here we're gonna stick with the exact same brush
00:47:29
that we've been using for the facial features.
00:47:31
So again, pencil brush or sketching brush.
00:47:33
I feel like I'm repeating myself, sorry about that.
00:47:36
And we're going to zoom in and add any element you want.
00:47:39
I would recommend trying to look at whatever element
00:47:41
you're trying to draw and draw it
00:47:42
in the most basic version you can.
00:47:45
So like pendant earrings could literally
00:47:47
just be one long line.
00:47:51
A necklace could be just that very basic necklace U-shape
00:47:59
with a super simplified version of whatever charm
00:48:01
you might have, so like a little cross.
00:48:06
As you can see really basic shapes,
00:48:08
almost just one single line for the whole thing.
00:48:12
If you are drawing clothing elements,
00:48:13
of course you can all just go ahead
00:48:15
and draw one outline and call it Clothes.
00:48:18
Although that kind of looks fun,
00:48:19
but it might be a little bit too weird.
00:48:21
So what I would recommend doing instead
00:48:22
is drawing, well the clothing element itself,
00:48:26
either filling it in manually or color dropping
00:48:29
and then lowering the capacity of your layer
00:48:33
probably around 90 or 95 just so it's not fully opaque.
00:48:38
And so that you can see a little bit of the skin underneath.
00:48:43
Now in my case, I don't know why I never wear chokers,
00:48:46
but I think it looks really fun on a long neck.
00:48:48
So I'm just going to draw three very simple lines
00:48:50
on the neck.
00:48:51
And that's pretty much all I'm going to do
00:48:52
in terms of accessories.
00:49:03
So once more, feel free to pause the video here.
00:49:05
If you need more time to draw your accessories,
00:49:07
really this is something that is super easy to do
00:49:10
but can completely transform your piece so it's worth doing.
00:49:13
And once you're done, we are going to meet up
00:49:14
in the next chapter, which is going
00:49:15
to be adding all those colorful blobs
00:49:17
that is going to completely bring the peace to life
00:49:20
and make it super fun and groovy.
00:49:22
(bell chimes)
00:49:25
Now I'm going to start by adding some of the colorful blobs
00:49:27
onto the hair itself.
00:49:28
I just think it makes the piece a little bit more whimsical,
00:49:31
but you could just skip ahead a little bit
00:49:33
and go straight to the blobs that are around the character.
00:49:36
So if you wanna have some blobs onto the hair,
00:49:37
just go ahead and create a new layer
00:49:39
right above everything you have for the hair
00:49:41
but still below the accessories.
00:49:43
We are not going to apply this layer as a clipping mask,
00:49:45
I'm gonna tell you why in a few seconds.
00:49:47
But we are going to rename it to, oh gosh,
00:49:51
let's just go with Hair blobs.
00:49:53
(Genevieve chuckles)
00:49:54
Doesn't really make a whole lot of sense,
00:49:56
but we'll know what we mean.
00:49:57
And here you can use whatever kind of color palette
00:49:59
you want.
00:50:00
So I'm gonna go with a bunch of different colors,
00:50:02
but if you wanted, you could pick one basic hue
00:50:05
like I don't know, green, and then just go
00:50:07
with a bunch of different greens.
00:50:08
You could go with a bunch of purples and pinks,
00:50:11
so just staying within the same kind of colors
00:50:13
but with a little bit of variation.
00:50:15
But you do wanna make sure they're going to be bright
00:50:16
and fun.
00:50:17
So if you have my color palette
00:50:18
essentially we're going to be working
00:50:19
with these nine colors, which as you can see
00:50:21
they're all pretty much not fully saturated.
00:50:25
They're kind of middle of the way
00:50:26
to two thirds of the way up in terms of saturation,
00:50:29
but they're never fully saturated.
00:50:30
I feel like if we are going with a lot of bright colors
00:50:33
that are fully saturated, it's going to make the piece
00:50:35
look just too much.
00:50:37
So we're going to reel it in by adding a bit of gray
00:50:39
in our colors.
00:50:41
And here I recommend just honestly
00:50:42
starting with whichever one color,
00:50:44
drawing all the blobs and then just changing the colors
00:50:46
of the blobs.
00:50:47
I think it's a little bit easier
00:50:49
that way you're gonna have a better idea of the composition
00:50:51
if you're working with just one color
00:50:52
and then changing that color,
00:50:54
as if you were to start with all the different colors
00:50:56
at once.
00:50:58
And here there's not really any rhyme or reason
00:51:00
in terms of where I'm putting those blobs.
00:51:03
So really put them wherever you want, it doesn't matter,
00:51:07
we just want to, again add a little bit more
00:51:09
of that whimsical fun feel to the piece.
00:51:27
And as you can see here, I'm filling these blobs manually
00:51:30
cause I do wanna build a lot of texture within them.
00:51:33
So I recommend you do the same.
00:51:35
But if you want to use color drop, you can of course
00:51:38
it's just that the piece is going to look
00:51:40
a little bit more flat and I think it's nice
00:51:42
to have a bit more texture than just flat colors.
00:52:14
And then just so that they blend in a little bit better
00:52:16
with the hair itself, we're also going to lower the opacity
00:52:18
of that hair blobs layer,
00:52:21
probably around, I would guess between 80 and 90%,
00:52:25
just again, so we can see a little bit
00:52:27
of the hairs strands underneath,
00:52:29
but still having very vibrant colors.
00:52:32
I think I'm gonna set mine at 86.
00:52:34
There we go.
00:52:35
Now we're going to come back and add gradient
00:52:37
to these hair blobs to make them
00:52:38
a little bit more interesting.
00:52:39
But before that, while we have the proper brush,
00:52:41
we're going to draw the blobs in front of the character
00:52:43
and then the ones in the back.
00:52:45
So for the blobs in the front,
00:52:46
just create a new layer above everything you have so far
00:52:49
except for any texture you might have at the top.
00:52:53
And let's just rename that new layer to Front Blobs.
00:52:56
Why not?
00:52:57
And here, same brush, same color for now.
00:52:59
We're just going to draw whatever bloby shape
00:53:01
we want at the bottom.
00:53:04
There's really, again, no right or wrong way
00:53:06
to do this here.
00:53:07
Just go ahead and draw some front shapes.
00:53:35
Now these blobs, if you want,
00:53:37
you can go ahead and experiment with plain medium opacity,
00:53:39
but I'm going to keep mine at a hundred percent.
00:53:41
I think it just frames the piece a little bit better.
00:53:43
And once we have them we're just gonna go back
00:53:45
and create another layer at the very back with more blobs.
00:53:49
But before that, we might actually organize our file
00:53:51
a little bit just by grouping our layers a little bit.
00:53:53
So to group layers in Procreate is very easy,
00:53:55
all you have to do is take one finger
00:53:57
and swipe the layers you want to select towards the right.
00:54:00
So I'm just gonna start by selecting
00:54:01
all the layers relating to the head and the face.
00:54:04
So from face to facial feature
00:54:07
and creating a group with that just so we have everything
00:54:10
a little bit better organized again.
00:54:12
So tapping on group right here,
00:54:14
which as you can see just creates this group
00:54:16
with all the facial features and facial elements,
00:54:18
which if you tap on the little arrow right here,
00:54:20
you can then collapse,
00:54:22
which makes the whole layer list so much clearer.
00:54:25
You can also rename the group, I'm gonna go with just Face.
00:54:30
And then I'm gonna do the same thing with the hair.
00:54:32
Again, just to keep the file more organized.
00:54:34
So from Hair to Hair Blobs,
00:54:37
grouping that
00:54:40
collapsing the group
00:54:42
and renaming the group to Hair.
00:54:47
Okay, now it's much easier to see what we're doing.
00:54:49
So from there, if you wanna add more blobs
00:54:51
in the background, you would just create a new layer,
00:54:53
putting it below everything you have
00:54:55
and renaming it to Back Blobs.
00:54:59
Otherwise, same thing as for the front blobs,
00:55:00
we're just going to draw whatever shape,
00:55:02
although these, you probably want to bring them
00:55:03
higher around the character as opposed
00:55:05
to just focusing them on the bottom.
00:55:33
And then once you have all the blobs mapped out,
00:55:35
we're gonna come back in and recolor them
00:55:37
just so they're not all one flat color.
00:55:39
And then we'll move to add some gradient
00:55:40
and a bit of light within the blobs.
00:55:42
So I'm going to start by just recoloring the hair blobs.
00:55:45
So just going back to that hair blobs layer.
00:55:51
And because they're on separate layer,
00:55:52
you can just go ahead, pick any color you want.
00:55:56
Let's say I'm gonna go with this purple right here
00:55:58
and then just drop it onto one blob to recolor it.
00:56:04
So again, there's really no right or wrong way here.
00:56:06
Experiment with placement of different colors.
00:56:09
You could always change them very easily.
00:56:10
So just try a bunch of things until you're happy
00:56:12
with the result.
00:56:32
And I'm noticing here, I was not really doing
00:56:34
that intentionally, but I think my brain is telling me
00:56:36
that's probably a good thing to keep in mind.
00:56:39
You can see my blobs are essentially creating
00:56:41
a bit of a gradient, like a rainbow gradient
00:56:44
from a aqua blue green at the top here
00:56:49
towards a blue, towards a purple, towards a pink,
00:56:52
and then an orange.
00:56:53
So if you look at kind of the color sector here,
00:56:56
it is a gradient kind of from this here,
00:57:00
towards here, towards here.
00:57:02
So what I'm saying here essentially is,
00:57:04
it might be a good thing to keep in mind
00:57:06
if you're going with a bunch of colors like me,
00:57:08
adding some sort of a gradient
00:57:09
between the different blobs
00:57:11
so that they're not just like, for example, orange there,
00:57:14
yellow there and then blue.
00:57:18
Keeping it in a bit more of a flow in the colors.
00:57:22
Now I've been filming for a while now,
00:57:23
so if what I just said, makes no sense,
00:57:25
don't worry about it, just experiment with the colors
00:57:27
and if you find something that you like,
00:57:28
that's really all that matters.
00:57:30
Great, now we're good to do the exact same thing
00:57:32
on the front blobs, but not the back blobs
00:57:34
as the back blobs I want them to be a little bit less
00:57:38
eye-catching, so I'm just gonna create
00:57:40
a soft gradient within them.
00:57:41
'Cause if it's a bunch of colors,
00:57:42
it's going to really distract from the character itself
00:57:45
and that's definitely not what we want.
00:57:47
That being said though, the front blob,
00:57:48
we can color them as desired.
00:57:50
So just going back onto that front blob layer
00:57:52
and using the same technique such as dropping some colors
00:57:55
maybe in a bit of a gradient onto the front blobs.
00:58:15
And if you have two that are overlapping, not a problem.
00:58:17
You can just draw the line between them
00:58:21
and then when you drop your color,
00:58:23
you can adjust the threshold,
00:58:24
so that instead of filling everything,
00:58:25
it just fills one of the sides.
00:58:27
Whoops.
00:58:34
There we go.
00:58:37
Now before we add the gradients to the blob,
00:58:39
which is going to be very easy,
00:58:40
but it's again just going to bring the piece up a notch,
00:58:43
we're also going to add some white blobs above everything
00:58:46
just to make the piece pop even more.
00:58:48
So go ahead and create a new layer above everything
00:58:51
except for the texture.
00:58:52
If you do have some, rename that new layer to White Blobs.
00:58:58
And here you're just going to color pick
00:58:59
the same color you use for the accessories.
00:59:02
So if it is still in history, you can pick it there.
00:59:05
Otherwise, what you can do is just hide
00:59:07
any textual layer you have to make sure your color picking
00:59:09
the right color.
00:59:12
Then reactivating the texture and using the color itself.
00:59:16
Again, there's no right or wrong way
00:59:17
to do these white blobs.
00:59:19
I just think they add a bit more dimension to the piece.
00:59:22
I'm personally going to keep them on the smaller side
00:59:24
and I'm going to keep them as ovals
00:59:26
as opposed to really bloby shapes.
00:59:28
But it really doesn't mean that's what you have to do.
00:59:30
If you wanna go with something else,
00:59:32
please feel free to go ahead and experiment.
00:59:37
And I think I'm gonna keep mine in groups.
00:59:39
So instead of drawing a bunch, kind of all over the place,
00:59:43
well I have one single one there,
00:59:44
but otherwise you can see it's two and then three.
00:59:48
So really just focusing them on specific sections
00:59:51
of the piece, especially where you have
00:59:52
a lot of color density, ending a bit of white
00:59:55
can just help everything pop a little bit more.
00:59:57
And speaking of making everything pop a little bit more
00:59:59
if you want, you can add a bit of a shadow
01:00:00
behind those blobs when you're done.
01:00:02
And so the way to do that would just be
01:00:04
duplicating that white blob layer that you have.
01:00:08
It's in Procreate, the way to do that
01:00:09
is just swiping the layer towards the left with one finger.
01:00:13
Tapping duplicate,
01:00:15
then picking the bottom copy,
01:00:18
maybe hiding the top copy just for now.
01:00:20
So we can see we're doing.
01:00:22
So just tapping on the check mark on the top copy
01:00:26
renaming the bottom copy actually to White Blob Shadows.
01:00:34
And here you just go ahead and pick a gray
01:00:36
that has a bit of a hue to it.
01:00:38
Probably more of a purple hue
01:00:39
than a kind of greenish yellow.
01:00:42
Otherwise it's going to look really muddy and gross.
01:00:44
So the exact color really doesn't matter,
01:00:47
probably middle of the way in terms of brightness
01:00:49
and really quite desaturated.
01:00:51
But again, just a grayish purple is all you need here.
01:00:55
And you're just going to color drop that
01:00:56
onto one of your white shapes
01:00:58
and adjusting the threshold until
01:01:00
it fills all of the shapes.
01:01:03
And then to create the shadow effect,
01:01:05
what we're going to do is reactivate
01:01:07
the white blobs layer we have
01:01:09
and then we're going to move this shadow layer
01:01:11
a little bit towards the bottom left
01:01:13
to create the drop shadow effect.
01:01:17
So using any kind of tool that you have
01:01:19
that allows you to move a layer, like an error tool.
01:01:23
And then just moving those shadows a little bit like this.
01:01:28
Now if you do have blending modes in your software,
01:01:30
you can bring the shadows to the next level
01:01:31
by applying a blending mode.
01:01:33
So that's exactly what I'm going to do.
01:01:35
Again in Procreate blending modes are in the little N
01:01:38
next to the check mark, you can tap on that.
01:01:40
And again, you can just scroll through the list
01:01:42
and find something that you like.
01:01:45
I personally know I'm gonna go with linear burn
01:01:48
or you could use multiply as well.
01:01:49
That would be a good option.
01:01:51
And probably lowering capacity here,
01:01:53
so you can get something a little bit softer
01:01:55
than what we had.
01:01:57
And so the last thing we have to do
01:01:58
is just add a bit of a gradient within the shapes
01:02:01
super easy, but it's going to completely
01:02:03
transform everything.
01:02:04
And for that, there is a few different techniques
01:02:06
that you can use.
01:02:07
If you're working in a software like Photoshop
01:02:08
and you have a gradient tool,
01:02:10
then you can apply a gradient in the shapes very easily.
01:02:12
So feel free to use that tool if you have one.
01:02:15
In Procreate, there isn't any gradient tool
01:02:17
at least that would work for these purposes.
01:02:20
So what we're going to do is we're going to use masks
01:02:22
and then we're going to use the baked charcoal brush,
01:02:24
which is going to allow us to build even more texture.
01:02:27
So I guess it's a good thing in the end.
01:02:28
And then we're just going to paint the gradient ourself.
01:02:31
Now let's start with the background blob
01:02:33
because right now it's really flat and I don't like that.
01:02:36
So we're going to use honestly any kind of mask
01:02:39
that you know you have in your software.
01:02:41
So it could be a clipping mask just like before.
01:02:43
So in that case you would just create a new layer
01:02:45
above the back blobs, rename that to Gradient
01:02:48
or something like that and apply that as a clipping mask
01:02:51
onto the blobs so that the gradient
01:02:53
stays within the blob shapes, that would be one option.
01:02:56
But I feel like we're starting to have a lot of layers.
01:02:58
And since we're not going to need to move that gradient
01:03:01
independently from the blobs like we have for example,
01:03:03
to move the facial features from the face,
01:03:06
what we can do is activate a mask
01:03:08
onto the blob layer itself.
01:03:09
So I'm just going to delete that layer,
01:03:12
which is going to tell our software
01:03:13
to keep the lines we're drawing now within the blob shape,
01:03:16
but it's still going to be just one layer.
01:03:18
So that type of mask we're using here is called alpha lock.
01:03:21
And to activate it within Procreate, it's very easy.
01:03:23
You just take two fingers,
01:03:24
swipe your layers towards the right,
01:03:26
which is going to bring in this little
01:03:27
checkered pattern here.
01:03:28
If for some reason it doesn't work,
01:03:30
you can just tap on the layer and select alpha lock
01:03:32
from the menu.
01:03:33
And alpha lock, just like clipping mask is pretty common.
01:03:35
So there's a high chance that you could find it
01:03:37
in your own software as well.
01:03:39
So you could just Google Alpha Lock
01:03:40
and the name of your recent software
01:03:42
and you would probably find something there.
01:03:44
And from there, we're just gonna go back
01:03:45
to the brush that we used, that was a textured brush.
01:03:48
If you have the illustration bundle,
01:03:50
that was the basic texture brush.
01:03:53
And there's a few different methods you could use here.
01:03:55
Either color picking whatever color you have
01:03:58
on that specific blob and then changing the hue.
01:04:01
So just playing with what we usually call the color here.
01:04:03
So not necessarily the brightness or the saturation,
01:04:05
but really the hue itself
01:04:08
and going with something either on the right
01:04:10
or on the left of your base color.
01:04:12
If you do have my color palette,
01:04:13
you can kind of see the gradient right here.
01:04:15
So you could just pick one of the colors
01:04:16
that is next to the base color you use for that blob.
01:04:19
So in my case, the blob was this kind
01:04:21
of sky blue right here.
01:04:22
So I'm going to start with a bit of that aqua green
01:04:28
and just with a big version of my brush,
01:04:30
(pen scribbling)
01:04:31
brush that over one side of the shape.
01:04:39
And then I'm going to do the same thing on the other side
01:04:41
again just to amp it up a little bit.
01:04:44
So that was my base color here.
01:04:46
This time I'm going to change the hue instead of going
01:04:49
with more of a green, more of a purple.
01:04:52
So this one, the color palette, little way, same thing,
01:04:54
just big brush and creating a bit of a gradient
01:04:57
onto the other side.
01:05:07
So we're just going to repeat these steps
01:05:08
with the other kind of blobs we have.
01:05:10
So next I'm going to move on to the front blobs.
01:05:14
So either creating a clipping mask,
01:05:15
applying it to the front blobs or activating alpha lock
01:05:18
if that is available to you.
01:05:22
And then either just color picking and then changing the hue
01:05:25
and playing with the different options.
01:05:36
And I think for best results here,
01:05:37
you always want to add two colors.
01:05:40
So on either sides of your base color.
01:05:42
So in my case here I had a purple and I went with more
01:05:45
of a pink, kinda red pink.
01:05:48
I'm gonna go with a purple that has a bit more blue
01:05:51
for the other side.
01:06:09
Now to give you an example,
01:06:10
if you were to stray from the color palette,
01:06:12
the base color for this blob here
01:06:14
was this yellow golden orange.
01:06:16
So I went with a red or orange for the bottom.
01:06:19
And then this time I would go towards the other side,
01:06:23
which a much brighter yellow or greenish yellow
01:06:26
for the other side of my gradient.
01:06:28
Now once we're here, I'm not going to add
01:06:30
all of the hex codes, don't freak out.
01:06:32
It doesn't need to be a specific color,
01:06:33
just experiment with things.
01:06:35
We just want to add a bit more of a vibe.
01:06:37
The exact color code does not matter at all.
01:06:41
There's really no need to take the time
01:06:43
to try and get the exact same color as I'm using.
01:06:46
It's really not worth it, trust me.
01:07:05
And once you have the front blobs color,
01:07:06
then where you're going to do the exact same thing
01:07:08
on the hair blobs.
01:07:10
So either applying a clipping mask onto the hair blob
01:07:12
or activating alpha lock if that is available to you.
01:07:15
And then just going back in and adding the same
01:07:18
style of gradient.
01:07:52
Feel free to pause the video here
01:07:53
if you need a little bit more time to create gradients
01:07:55
onto your blob.
01:07:56
And once you're done, we're going to meet up one last time
01:07:58
to add even more details and highlights
01:08:00
onto the blobs themselves to make the piece look
01:08:03
even more professional.
01:08:04
So once you're happy with your blog gradients,
01:08:06
we're going to add some highlights onto the blobs
01:08:09
that are on the hair and maybe a little bit
01:08:10
on the ones that are in the front.
01:08:13
And we're going to start with the ones on the hair
01:08:14
cause these are the ones that definitely
01:08:16
need some highlights.
01:08:17
So go ahead and create a new layer above the hair blobs
01:08:21
and rename that new layer to Hair Blobs Light.
01:08:28
Now these lights, we want them to stay within the blobs,
01:08:30
so if it is available to you, go ahead and apply this layer
01:08:33
as a clipping mask onto the hair blob.
01:08:35
Now if you do have blending modes in your software
01:08:38
we're also going to use a blending modes
01:08:39
for the hair blob light to open my blending mode list.
01:08:44
If you don't have blending modes, it doesn't matter.
01:08:46
You're just gonna pick the same bright color you use
01:08:48
for the highlights on the face.
01:08:50
But if you do have blending modes,
01:08:51
go ahead and select something such as overlay or soft light.
01:08:55
I think I'm gonna go with, mm,
01:08:57
I think I'm gonna go with soft light for now,
01:08:59
but that's something you can always change as you go.
01:09:01
And just like we did for the white blobs,
01:09:03
we're just going to deactivate whatever paper texture
01:09:06
we might have at the top so that we can select
01:09:08
the exact right color.
01:09:10
We're going to color pick that,
01:09:12
reactivate the paper texture,
01:09:14
go back to whatever pencil or sketching brush we were using.
01:09:20
And then we're just going to similarly
01:09:22
to what we did on the face outline,
01:09:24
the top right section of those hair blobs
01:09:27
and add extra little dots on the top right.
01:09:31
So it's going to look a bit like this,
01:09:33
although I'm realizing right now honestly,
01:09:35
soft light is not cutting it.
01:09:36
I think I'm gonna switch already to overlay.
01:09:38
Should be a little bit brighter.
01:09:39
Yeah, I think that's what I'm gonna go with.
01:09:43
But once more, this is a case of you can just scroll
01:09:45
through the list and find something you like.
01:09:47
I think soft light is nice, but it's just a little bit
01:09:49
too pale for my liking in this case.
01:09:57
But otherwise, yeah, just a very simple thin line
01:10:00
on the top right of these blobs
01:10:02
and then maybe extra little dots
01:10:04
similar to what we had on the cheeks.
01:10:32
And if you want, you can finish up by doing the same thing
01:10:34
on the blobs in the front.
01:10:37
So I'm gonna just collapse the hair group.
01:10:39
So again, our file is a bit better organized.
01:10:42
Then create a new layer above the front blob layer,
01:10:47
renaming that layer to Front Blobs Light
01:10:51
(Genevieve chuckles)
01:10:52
using the same blending mode we used on the ones
01:10:55
on the hair, so in my case, overlay
01:11:02
and applying the front blobs light layer
01:11:05
that was hard to say, as a clipping mask
01:11:09
onto the front blobs themselves
01:11:11
so that whatever we draw now stays
01:11:12
within these front blob shape.
01:11:18
And here if you want, you could also draw
01:11:20
this bit of a highlight.
01:11:21
I think that brings too much attention to the front blobs.
01:11:24
So I'm just going to draw the little dots,
01:11:26
which is still going to make them look
01:11:27
a little bit less flat without bringing
01:11:29
too much attention again to them.
01:11:32
I want the focus of the piece to be the character,
01:11:34
not the blobs.
01:11:53
And there you go.
01:11:54
