00:00:00
hi there my name's Margot I've recently
00:00:03
started using a Presonus StudioLive
00:00:05
series 3 desk b32 sx here in my home
00:00:09
studio now this is an awesome piece of
00:00:12
gear it functions as a mixer as an audio
00:00:15
interface and as a control surface but
00:00:18
with all of that power comes a certain
00:00:19
amount of complexity so I've put
00:00:22
together a series of videos which will
00:00:24
show you how to get the desk set up how
00:00:26
to set it up for monitor mixes how to
00:00:29
use it for recording and as a control
00:00:32
surface for persona Studio One recording
00:00:35
software there is loads to cover so
00:00:37
let's get started so this is the desk
00:00:41
exactly as it was out of the box
00:00:43
I have reset it to the factory settings
00:00:45
I have connected it to my PC via USB and
00:00:49
also via ethernet into the control
00:00:51
socket on the back and I've connected my
00:00:53
monitor speakers to the monitor outs
00:00:55
which are on TRS jacks I've got some
00:00:58
music playing from my pc and nothing is
00:01:01
coming through so let's set that up
00:01:03
first now by default every input on the
00:01:06
desk is set to analog but of course I'm
00:01:08
connected to my PC via USB so I need to
00:01:11
change that setting now the stereo out
00:01:14
from your PC or your Mac if you'll say
00:01:17
play music from Spotify or YouTube comes
00:01:20
into the desk on the tape in channel now
00:01:23
at the moment I'm looking at channels 1
00:01:25
to 24 so I need to press the next button
00:01:27
to get to the next bank of faders and
00:01:29
here is my tape channel now this little
00:01:34
icon here the top left of the
00:01:35
touchscreen selects the input so if I
00:01:38
press that you can see I've got icons
00:01:40
for analog for the AV B Network for USB
00:01:44
and for the SD card and if I select USB
00:01:48
then it selects channels 37 and 38 we
00:01:52
need to remember those numbers for later
00:01:54
on and you can see there is now levels
00:01:56
shown on the channel so if I bring the
00:01:59
fader up and then if I turn my monitor
00:02:01
volume knob up over here
00:02:06
and there we go so there's additional
00:02:10
options for monitoring if you hit the
00:02:12
edit button here if I select monitor and
00:02:16
you can see I can monitor the main
00:02:19
outputs the solo bus the tape inputs or
00:02:22
any one of the sixteen flex mix buses
00:02:25
you've got the same options for
00:02:27
headphones so if I wanted my headphones
00:02:30
to simply duplicate what's coming
00:02:31
through the control room speakers then
00:02:33
I'd select main there is a lot more
00:02:35
flexibility though available in terms of
00:02:37
headphone monitoring which will come on
00:02:39
to in a later video so we've got audio
00:02:43
coming out of the computer through the
00:02:45
desk into my monitor speakers but I need
00:02:47
to make some changes in studio one as
00:02:49
well to fit with the changes I've just
00:02:51
made to the desk so here we are in
00:02:55
studio one I've got a previous mix down
00:02:57
imported but nothing else in the song at
00:03:00
the moment now if I go to studio one
00:03:02
options audio setup can see my audio
00:03:06
device is set so studio life series
00:03:09
three sample rate 48k device block size
00:03:13
128 samples and now I find that setting
00:03:17
absolutely fine for recording virtual
00:03:19
instruments when you're recording real
00:03:21
instruments or vocals latency isn't an
00:03:24
issue at all you'll see in a later video
00:03:26
when I show you how to set up monitoring
00:03:28
through the desk rather than through
00:03:31
studio one now I need to go down to song
00:03:34
setup audio i/o setup and then go to the
00:03:39
outputs tab here and you can see that
00:03:42
the main output from Studio one is set
00:03:44
to one two at the moment but I'm going
00:03:46
to send it through the tape in channel
00:03:48
that we've just set up so I need to
00:03:50
scroll along to 37 or 38 and hit apply
00:03:55
whilst we're here I also want to create
00:03:57
a mono output which is just for the
00:03:59
click track it's really helpful to have
00:04:02
that on a separate fader it makes it a
00:04:04
lot easier to setup different amounts of
00:04:06
click in different monitor mixes as well
00:04:08
if that's needed so to do that click add
00:04:11
mono creates this sub one bus I'm going
00:04:14
to rename that
00:04:18
and I'm gonna select channel 24 could be
00:04:23
any channel really I just need to
00:04:25
remember it and hit apply and that's
00:04:28
done now I also want to keep these
00:04:30
settings for new songs so to do that I
00:04:32
click make default and then yes now this
00:04:36
doesn't change the settings for any
00:04:38
songs that I have already saved but if I
00:04:42
were to open an old song and I wanted to
00:04:44
switch to these settings then I could
00:04:45
just click the reset to default button
00:04:47
here and now if I click OK and come back
00:04:51
to the mixer window you can see the main
00:04:53
outs are now set to channel 37 and 38
00:04:57
also if I select the outputs button over
00:05:00
here it brings up my click bus which is
00:05:04
set to channel 24 and then I need to
00:05:08
deselect the little metronome icon here
00:05:10
and select the metronome icon here and
00:05:14
it now means that when the metronome is
00:05:17
playing it will only go out of the click
00:05:18
thus it won't go out of my main output
00:05:21
but this click bus is not currently set
00:05:24
up on the desk so we need to go back and
00:05:26
do that now so what I want to do is
00:05:30
create a bank of faders that has my mics
00:05:32
and other inputs over here starting at
00:05:34
channel 1 my studio one outputs here in
00:05:37
the middle and then on this model of the
00:05:39
desk if I hit the aux inputs it brings
00:05:42
up my effects returns on this right hand
00:05:44
bank of faders which is really helpful
00:05:46
so I'm going to do this using the user
00:05:48
Bank which gives you total flexibility
00:05:50
to create a bank of faders showing
00:05:52
whatever channels you want in any order
00:05:54
so I hit user then select here and I use
00:06:00
the value encoder to scroll down to the
00:06:03
tape in channel so select that hit done
00:06:08
and then hit select on the channel and
00:06:11
this little icon here brings up settings
00:06:13
so I am gonna name this PC there we go
00:06:21
and next to it I want my click channel
00:06:24
so I hit select on that channel and we
00:06:27
set it to channel 24 so hit channel 24
00:06:31
and done select that channel now as you
00:06:34
can see it's still set to the analog
00:06:36
input so I could change that using the
00:06:38
touchscreen as I did before or you can
00:06:40
also just use the four buttons in the
00:06:43
input section here if I just press USB
00:06:45
then that's done it's set to USB
00:06:48
channel 24 and now if I go back into my
00:06:51
studio one somewhere I just had that
00:06:53
stereo mix file and hit play it's coming
00:06:59
through on my PC channel here and my
00:07:06
trick channel is right next to it so
00:07:16
there we go
00:07:17
now just to say as well if you preferred
00:07:19
you could connect your speakers to the
00:07:21
main outputs from the desk rather than
00:07:23
the monitor outs so if you followed
00:07:25
everything else in this video but you
00:07:26
did that then your speaker volume would
00:07:28
be controlled by the master fader here
00:07:30
you may find that more convenient to use
00:07:32
rather than the monitor volume knob over
00:07:34
there that's obviously up to you and the
00:07:36
final thing that I want to do in this
00:07:38
video is to save this desk routing as my
00:07:40
default project projects for studio live
00:07:43
desks contain all the global settings
00:07:45
and routing for the desk which includes
00:07:47
all of the changes that we've made
00:07:48
during this video so to save that I hit
00:07:51
the scenes button then store on the
00:07:55
first empty location I'll name this
00:07:57
default hit enter and we're done
00:08:06
seems over on the other side of the
00:08:08
screen store things like fader levels EQ
00:08:12
compression settings and so on you'd use
00:08:14
scenes for example in a live show where
00:08:16
say an electric guitarist switches
00:08:17
guitars partway through we want to save
00:08:20
the more fundamental routing changes
00:08:21
we've made so we're using a project and
00:08:24
that's it for this video I really hope
00:08:26
that was helpful in the next video we'll
00:08:28
set up some inputs to actually start
00:08:30
recording some music and we'll also use
00:08:32
the power of the studio live desk to set
00:08:34
up individual monitor mixes that will
00:08:36
help get the best out of our musicians
00:08:38
thanks for watching
