00:00:00
[Applause] I would like to say a few words about my
00:00:02
my next guest or my first guest tonight
00:00:03
and I'm going to do it now rather than
00:00:05
when he's out here because I don't want
00:00:06
to sound like a gushing school girl
00:00:08
but uh in my opinion he is probably the
00:00:11
best singer of popular songs in the last
00:00:13
two decades he's been on it for 40 years
00:00:15
and those of us who are around when when
00:00:18
he first started can remember the
00:00:21
the hysteria and the electricity when he
00:00:23
would appear any place and it was
00:00:24
genuine and it's amazing that 40 years
00:00:26
later
00:00:27
he still has that kind of adulation and
00:00:30
uh professional performance he's a I
00:00:32
guess a controversial personality and
00:00:34
there are only probably a few people in
00:00:37
our business professionally who can walk
00:00:38
into a room or walk on a stage and
00:00:40
people stop and know that you're in the
00:00:43
room I think he's a he's a consummate
00:00:44
artist and I'm glad he is here tonight
00:00:46
would you welcome Frank Sinatra
00:00:53
[Applause]
00:00:56

I put the words The Melodies
00:01:21
and music
00:01:22
and I sing the songs
00:01:27
I sing the songs
00:01:29
make the whole world sing I sing the
00:01:34
songs of love and special things
00:01:38
I sing the songs that make the young
00:01:41

00:01:52

00:01:58

00:02:07

00:02:22
things
00:02:23

00:02:27
girls cry
00:02:29
I sing the song I sing a song
00:02:33

00:02:36
your spirit to take a chance
00:02:39
music's from your heart
00:02:41
will find way to start
00:02:43
it's from me to you it's from
00:02:46

00:02:48
[Music]
00:02:52

00:02:56

00:02:58
I sing the songs of love and special
00:03:02
things
00:03:04
I sing the songs that make some young
00:03:08
girls cry
00:03:11
I sing the songs I sing the song
00:03:15
[Music]
00:03:21
and the whole world sings
00:03:28

00:03:30
I sing the songs
00:03:32
that make the young girls cry
00:03:36
I sing the songs I sing the song
00:03:44
I am using
00:03:49
the song
00:03:53
[Music]
00:04:01
[Applause]
00:04:32
thank you
00:04:36
listen there's a lady turtle out on the
00:04:39
hall I don't know
00:04:40
if dinner is still on
00:04:42
thank you
00:04:43
am I going to have to put up with this
00:04:45
every 14 years you barging in here like
00:04:47
this and singing a song God it's great
00:04:49
to have you here thank you John I really
00:04:51
mean it's so strange sitting here
00:04:53
watching you sing over there for what we
00:04:55
pay
00:04:56
you know
00:04:58
I said my God there's Frank Sinatra for
00:05:01
320 dollars how would you like how would
00:05:03
you like it Frank large bills dimes
00:05:05
dimes
00:05:07
two times everything everybody
00:05:08
that's an old joke yes how you feeling I
00:05:12
couldn't be better I couldn't be happier
00:05:15
and I couldn't be younger
00:05:19
all right
00:05:24
you know if somebody asked you that the
00:05:25
other night because you uh were married
00:05:27
recently and you said hey all of a
00:05:29
sudden everything was coming came
00:05:31
together came together yeah yeah I'm
00:05:34
really delighted she's a marvelous girl
00:05:35
yes she is she's a lovely lady
00:05:38
and uh everything's been so wonderful in
00:05:40
the past few months we've been on the
00:05:43
road a great deal you know doing another
00:05:44
one-nighters and concerts
00:05:46
and the audiences have been it's hard to
00:05:49
explain how truly wonderful they are
00:05:51
it's it's almost like a Renaissance that
00:05:52
happened years ago I mean and I noticed
00:05:55
that
00:05:56
when we're working around
00:05:58
you get closer obviously to the people
00:06:00
and I noticed the age
00:06:02
difference is quite interesting I mean
00:06:05
there are youngsters in there who are 13
00:06:06
and 14 years old and then they're the
00:06:08
older folks who came to the Paramount
00:06:10
Theater when they had the short socks
00:06:12
you know remember those days
00:06:14
pandemonium in the eyes oh yes that's
00:06:16
great a few years ago you said you kind
00:06:19
of retired then all and all of a sudden
00:06:20
now you're back at it I met it I did I
00:06:23
really meant I had a great time for two
00:06:25
years did you get bored no I didn't get
00:06:27
bored no I really didn't I did nothing I
00:06:29
wanted to do nothing after 32 or 33
00:06:31
years of working
00:06:33
I thought to myself you'd be nice to not
00:06:35
have to get up in the morning and do
00:06:37
that kind of jazz and so on and so forth
00:06:39
but then we got a great deal of pressure
00:06:41
not only for my own people but my own
00:06:43
family
00:06:44
and a lot of mail started coming in and
00:06:47
I tell you how how
00:06:48
interestingly wise the the public is
00:06:51
they said a lot of a couple hundred
00:06:54
letters said well why don't you at least
00:06:55
make an album I mean there's nobody in
00:06:58
the studio except you and the man they
00:06:59
said because they thought I wanted to
00:07:00
get away from the people and they said
00:07:01
well it made sense they said just at
00:07:03
least make us an album even if you don't
00:07:05
want to come out in public anymore so I
00:07:07
said well
00:07:08
what the hell I might as well go out and
00:07:09
go to work again all right
00:07:11
and uh I'm enjoying it eventually I
00:07:13
really am I'm glad you I'm glad you came
00:07:15
out of retirement
00:07:16
a big disappointment
00:07:18
[Applause]
00:07:24
we got to do a commercial occasionally
00:07:26
you know though I understand oh
00:07:28
absolutely
00:07:30
also to get my fee for that and we'll do
00:07:33
this we'll be right back there we are
00:07:40
we are back thank you doctor
00:07:47
we're talking with Frank we have David
00:07:48
Jansen with us tonight Olivia
00:07:49
Newton-John Ray Johnson
00:07:51
you uh you have a tendency to make the
00:07:53
papers uh frequently Frank oh I've been
00:07:55
known to get my name in a few
00:07:58
periodicals but I I think the in the
00:08:00
past six months the biggest thing was
00:08:02
when you appeared on the Jerry Lewis's
00:08:03
Telethon and walked out
00:08:06
with Dean Martin
00:08:07
and apparently I don't know how how deep
00:08:09
that Feud was but apparently they had
00:08:11
not really 20 years ago 20 years and
00:08:13
they hadn't really yeah how'd that come
00:08:15
about
00:08:16
well uh I called her I I dreamed dreamed
00:08:20
up the whole thing myself and I called a
00:08:22
drunkie one day
00:08:24
and his through his interpreter I asked
00:08:27
him would he like that
00:08:29
would he like to do the Telethon for
00:08:32
this for the for the kids you know that
00:08:33
Jerry dust and he said sure pal and I I
00:08:36
almost fell down because he didn't bat
00:08:38
one eyelash he said I'll be there and he
00:08:40
showed up and it all turned out very
00:08:42
nicely I thought it was time to they
00:08:43
they at least spoke you know and I was
00:08:45
very disappointed I always wanted later
00:08:46
and I saw the Nobel Peace prizes being
00:08:49
given out
00:08:51
what's wrong with me
00:08:53
they didn't give one actually because
00:08:55
it's easy to do to get those two idiots
00:08:57
together do they do they still
00:08:58
communicate now I mean is it is that
00:09:00
kind of over I imagine that that they're
00:09:02
they're talking to each other anyway so
00:09:03
Jerry of course is in New York he's
00:09:05
gonna he's gonna do uh Hills Apartment I
00:09:06
read in one trades yeah did you ever
00:09:09
have a feud going with anybody for that
00:09:10
length of time
00:09:11
I don't think so yeah no no no My Views
00:09:15
last about two minutes
00:09:17
you you you're quick to anger but also
00:09:19
you're quick to get it out that's true
00:09:21
yeah yeah uh oh yeah I guess we're just born
00:09:24
that way some guys are some guys aren't
00:09:26
you know what I mean
00:09:27
and uh
00:09:30
there you are well the press
00:09:31
occasionally I mean
00:09:33
seem to always print the things that
00:09:35
make good copy or they think make good
00:09:37
copy they very very seldom print and I
00:09:39
don't say this because you're here
00:09:40
because I don't have to Puff you up at
00:09:41
all but they never mentioned the things
00:09:43
that entertainers do for charity and I'm
00:09:45
raising money for boys clubs in the
00:09:47
hospitals and that Saturday but they
00:09:48
always do if you're in some kind of a
00:09:50
if you happen to brush somebody leaving
00:09:52
a bar or something like that
00:09:55
well I've never I've never done anything
00:09:57
like that
00:10:01
or um I think I'm gonna brush anybody
00:10:03
he's going to get knocked down I think
00:10:11
time you drove over the well Welcome
00:10:12
Wagon lady I think
00:10:14
I think that should I think that should
00:10:16
have been covered I mean that's news you
00:10:18
know
00:10:19
hey you gotta Now give me an indication
00:10:22
of what he does I know Sunday night's a
00:10:23
big night at the Century Plaza for you
00:10:24
because you're receiving the uh award
00:10:26
from the friends of the Hebrew
00:10:27
University the scope is award it's a
00:10:30
it's a wonderful honor and I'm really
00:10:31
I'm really getting the boot out of the
00:10:33
idea because last year I was the
00:10:35
presenter and the the great Maestro
00:10:38
Arthur Rubenstein was the recipient and
00:10:40
and a couple of months ago when they
00:10:42
called me and said would you
00:10:44
consent to accept the award
00:10:47
I nearly broke the guy's arm so I didn't
00:10:48
get away from me you know and I'm really
00:10:51
honored and thrilled about it because
00:10:52
they're a great organization they do a
00:10:54
lot of good work
00:10:55
it's a great school it's a wonderful
00:10:56
University those are the kind of honors
00:10:58
and awards you to receive the kind of
00:10:59
makeup for some of the other stuff that
00:11:00
yeah all the other stuff as you said is
00:11:02
sensationalism and they they
00:11:04
they figured cells copies you know what
00:11:07
we really should do in our business is
00:11:08
to get a piece of the action every time
00:11:09
they do that
00:11:11
get two or three percent of the paper
00:11:12
for that day right maybe it could be a
00:11:15
rich man I would quit again I get out
00:11:19
again just give me a piece of this can
00:11:20
walk around and collect the money that's
00:11:22
all tell me about the uh I've been
00:11:24
reading in the uh about the Paul key
00:11:26
show the salute to John Wayne that's
00:11:27
coming up which you just uh which I
00:11:29
understand you uh UMC yeah I was the
00:11:32
kind of uh Toastmaster for a Taping that
00:11:34
we did last week it was a testimonial to
00:11:36
to the big guy the Duke and all of his
00:11:39
friends came people with whom he worked
00:11:41
in films and so on and they saw the gals
00:11:44
and it was really a marvelous night a
00:11:46
very touching night I think he was very
00:11:48
touched Duke was
00:11:49
and uh I had a great deal of fun because
00:11:52
I was running from one set to another
00:11:53
set because the we did it at the Warners
00:11:57
and uh on a sound stage and it so
00:12:00
happens that I've run along with me the
00:12:02
cast
00:12:03
just a few few nobodies have children no
00:12:06
buddies were there the other night we
00:12:08
had Charlie Brunson John byner Glenn
00:12:10
Campbell Sammy Davis Angie Dickinson
00:12:12
Marty Hall Bob Hope
00:12:13
Ron Howard Lee Marvin mourin O'Hara Dan
00:12:16
Rona dick Martin James Stewart Claire
00:12:18
Trevor Henry Winkler and me
00:12:20
not available
00:12:22
[Applause]
00:12:37
we are back can I ask you a couple more
00:12:39
questions I know you got a recording
00:12:40
session tonight
00:12:42
what's been the high point in your
00:12:43
career
00:12:45
uh and everybody in our business have
00:12:47
had low points you've had them
00:12:49
well I think it's very difficult to pick
00:12:52
one particular moment uh I think to
00:12:55
think of a couple of them right away
00:12:57
would be uh obviously uh
00:13:00
winning the Academy Award for eternity
00:13:03
From Here to Eternity and then and then
00:13:04
being involved being a part of a film
00:13:06
called Man with the Golden Arm which I
00:13:08
thought was a milestone Milestone
00:13:10
picture business in the in the in
00:13:13
personal appearances of course
00:13:15
working any Saloon is a high point for
00:13:17
me I just love to get out of the stage
00:13:18
and work in the saloon yeah and see the
00:13:20
people I think it's marvelous and this
00:13:22
and the saloons I call them saloons but
00:13:24
I mean clubs everybody's so close to us
00:13:26
all the times
00:13:27
and even for instance tonight it was fun
00:13:29
coming here because I I I ran into
00:13:32
people that I haven't seen because there
00:13:34
are so many TV shows being being done at
00:13:36
the same time and Mr Fox who's working
00:13:39
next door
00:13:40
the red the garbage deal they're the
00:13:42
junk man he said to me hey baby you want
00:13:44
to go to planes next Sunday with me to
00:13:46
church he said
00:13:49
[Applause]
00:13:54
he said because I'm the only colored man
00:13:56
I know who don't want to sit in the back
00:13:57
of Heaven
00:13:58
he's funny oh he's funny when you
00:14:02
I grew up with you listen to your music
00:14:04
in high school and so forth just
00:14:06
occurred to me crazy thought this
00:14:07
afternoon when you're in a romantic mood
00:14:09
and you're trying to make out whose
00:14:11
records do you put on
00:14:13
[Applause]
00:14:18
I've spent a lot of nice evenings
00:14:20
listening to your music and I just
00:14:21
wonder I said who Frank listens to
00:14:24
oh I play Jerry fail
00:14:26
[Laughter]
00:14:29
I uh interesting concept yes it is but
00:14:34
but I can answer that by telling you
00:14:35
that in those lovely moments
00:14:38
uh I play daphus and Chloe
00:14:41
or the sunken cathedral in golf cartel
00:14:44
that kind of classy Jazz fool around
00:14:46
with all that other stuff because hey
00:14:49
look I know you're going to do another
00:14:51
number of the band because I know you
00:14:52
got a recording session tonight and uh
00:14:53
really yeah
00:14:57
right now
00:15:02
we'll go see things
00:15:09
[Applause]
00:15:16
see you look good John now that's it for
00:15:19
me
00:15:21
why don't you guys get with the band
00:15:24
hey Frank it's good to see you uh I I
00:15:26
just I just was hanging around in the
00:15:29
hall and I said Frank Sinatra's here
00:15:31
I've never met him you know
00:15:33
and I get the two excuses certainly
00:15:36
certainly
00:15:37
so was hurt
00:15:44
fambino bambazo two bullets in the head
00:15:48
Thursday
00:15:52
[Applause]
00:15:56
now this this you don't believe excuse
00:15:58
us Johnny you're from the Midwest you're
00:15:59
busy going is the truck loaded
00:16:04
Guido says hi he hasn't had a chance to
00:16:06
talk to you and from Jersey City your
00:16:08
good friend bubani
00:16:10
um
00:16:12
foreign
00:16:15
he started his car with your album on
00:16:18
and now he's a highway
00:16:22
[Applause]
00:16:26
but I tell you I am a Jew and you're an
00:16:29
Italian and here we have what
00:16:33
it's a great Irishman this is America
00:16:34
yes and that's why I just want to say
00:16:37
before we go any further for 14 years
00:16:39
Johnny Carson kept saying do you really
00:16:41
know Frank
00:16:42
and I want you to know Frank I worship
00:16:45
you and I love you I really mean this
00:16:46
because since I'm a kid I used to blow
00:16:49
in girls ears and hear you was gone
00:16:52
do it my way
00:16:54
I need a girl so bad
00:16:59
my wife but she's ill
00:17:03
who's got married Frank I just can't
00:17:04
picture him on the wedding night
00:17:05
standing in the room going
00:17:08
and I suppose
00:17:17
and Barbara Barbara his wife was going
00:17:19
Frank when you get a minute
00:17:23
hey all the good things this is the most
00:17:26
exciting night in the years that I've
00:17:27
known Johnny Carson he started me on
00:17:29
this show this is the most exciting
00:17:31
night and I I so help me it's a great
00:17:33
night he was even nervous because he
00:17:35
came to me and said
00:17:40
you are a Powerhouse and Frank I love
00:17:43
you
00:17:44
[Laughter]
00:17:50
[Applause]
00:17:56
right listen can I tell a story about
00:17:59
what this man did to me once you may
00:18:01
have known or heard about this it was
00:18:02
true story this is a long time ago long
00:18:05
before Don got married I was eating
00:18:07
dinner in a restaurant in New York and
00:18:10
uh I was sitting with some friends and he
00:18:12
came over to the table and he said Frank
00:18:14
do me a favor with you he said I'm
00:18:16
sitting with a very pretty girl and uh
00:18:18
I'm trying to make out you know and he
00:18:20
said I told her I know you and she
00:18:22
really doesn't believe me would you stop
00:18:23
by the table I said all right I'm just
00:18:24
about finished I was down to the
00:18:25
expresso and I finally he went back and
00:18:28
I walked by the table and I said how are
00:18:30
you Don nice to see you he said had to
00:18:32
see I'm eating Frank
00:18:38
[Applause]
00:18:43
got with this girl bothering me
00:18:49
you did so I started at Johnny when I
00:18:52
started at zyde's jazz land that was the
00:18:54
first time I met Sinatra Ed it was it
00:18:56
came with Peggy Lee right Frank well the
00:18:58
first time actually was in Murray
00:19:00
Franklin's in Miami Beach and he came
00:19:02
down there and Murphy Franklin's a heck
00:19:03
of a guy he's still with a snake guy and
00:19:06
the room set about 20 people and I broke
00:19:08
the record
00:19:09
we had 21 and Roberta Sherwood and Frank
00:19:12
uh came over and he sat in the front and
00:19:15
I was scared to death as I am tonight as
00:19:18
many times I see them I I had never seen
00:19:20
him before he killed me that night
00:19:22
absolutely put me he should be scared
00:19:23
with that act
00:19:26
[Applause]
00:19:28
do you notice how he keeps moving on
00:19:30
stage all the time
00:19:31
God bless you
00:19:35
look at the violin section why they
00:19:37
always look like the union didn't call
00:19:42
violin players always look like I gotta
00:19:45
get an operation
00:19:46
[Laughter]
00:19:50
boy the budget's big tonight but you got
00:19:52
the boss here that's right and to me
00:19:53
Frank Sinatra is the boss because for
00:19:55
one reason not because of the word boss
00:19:58
but because he stimulates excitement he
00:20:00
stimulates our industry and he makes you
00:20:03
nervous
00:20:05
foreign
00:20:07
[Applause]
00:20:17
come on Frank come on we're going to
00:20:19
walk on the boardwalk come on
00:20:22
come back
00:20:24
[Applause]
00:20:27
[Music]
00:20:33
he's insane
00:20:38
it seems we stood and talked like this
00:20:44
once before
00:20:46
we looked at each other
00:20:52
I can't remember
00:20:54
[Music]
00:21:02
the clothes you're wearing are the
00:21:06
clothes that I wore
00:21:11
smile you're smiling you a smile
00:21:17
I can't remember
00:21:20
well when
00:21:27
some things that happened
00:21:29
for the first time
00:21:37
to be happy
00:21:40
again
00:21:45
and so it seems that we have met once
00:21:52
before
00:21:54
and then we laughed a lot to before
00:22:00
[Music]
00:22:08
[Music]
00:22:10
where where
00:22:18
[Music]
00:22:23
[Music]
00:22:30
all right
00:22:40
[Music] [Applause]
00:22:42
[Music] [Applause]
00:22:46
[Music]
00:22:47
[Applause]
00:22:48
[Music]
00:22:52

00:22:55
