00:01:52
i decided to do the exterior teak on
00:01:56
blue moon i just used teak oil uh
00:01:58
because we had it on the boat and
00:02:00
that's what was on there before i didn't
00:02:02
brighten the teak or use that like teak
00:02:04
brightener cleaner stuff
00:02:05
because to be honest um i think the
00:02:08
darker wood kind of suits blue moon
00:02:11
um yeah just kind of a preference thing
00:02:14
we might do it in the future but for now
00:02:16
i really just wanted to treat it and
00:02:18
yeah it's a much bigger job than it
00:02:20
looks but it's nice to be able to do
00:02:21
some outside work for a little while i
00:02:23
just finished the first coat and i'm
00:02:24
probably gonna go do a second coat
00:02:26
really quickly and hopefully fingers
00:02:27
crossed it will dry
00:02:29
before this evening because i'm gonna
00:02:31
have to batten up and
00:02:33
i really need those hatch boards to dry

00:04:00
look
00:04:18
it's so nice to see the wood for the
00:04:19
first time this morning
00:04:22
i i really love the way it turned out
00:04:25
and it dried really really nicely which
00:04:27
is good because i think they're actually
00:04:28
calling for rain this evening and then
00:04:30
into tomorrow so
00:04:32
caught the weather window right with
00:04:34
that one i quite like the dark the dark
00:04:36
wood maybe someday we'll brighten it and
00:04:38
clean it up a little bit but right now
00:04:39
it's just really nice knowing that it's
00:04:41
protected and the nice part about this
00:04:42
stuff is that it doesn't flake like
00:04:44
varnish does
00:04:46
so yeah i think it looks great i had
00:04:48
that plastic in between last night
00:04:50
because
00:04:51
just in case it wasn't quite dry
00:04:54
i didn't want the hatchboards to stick
00:04:56
together so
00:04:57
that's why that blue plastic was there
00:04:58
but
00:04:59
it worked well everything's dry
00:05:00
nothing's stuck
00:05:03
yeah
00:05:06
there's a seal over here he's watching
00:05:07
me
00:05:09
oh he's gone it's always so cold in the
00:05:11
cabin when we wake up and i think today
00:05:13
was like 12 degrees celsius but it's
00:05:15
crazy how much warmer it is as soon as
00:05:18
you step outside and the sun's decided
00:05:20
to come out which is super nice if
00:05:21
you're wondering where jonas is he is
00:05:23
gone for the week
00:05:24
so it's just me on the boat this is the
00:05:26
first time we've actually been apart
00:05:27
since leaving the docks
00:05:29
but
00:05:30
but i'm just using this time and this
00:05:32
weather window to
00:05:33
hopefully try and get little projects
00:05:35
done here and there like i fixed the
00:05:36
solar fan the other day it wasn't
00:05:38
working but i think it was just dusty
00:05:40
and yeah i did the wood and
00:05:43
yeah got lots of stuff on the go
00:05:54
[Music]
00:06:02

00:06:04

00:08:36
i just got back from my walk and
00:08:38
it's kind of clouding over so i feel
00:08:39
like we're gonna get a little bit of
00:08:40
rain here pretty quick so i'm gonna put
00:08:42
up a tarp really quickly we just have
00:08:44
like a small little summer tarp that we
00:08:45
put up to keep the rain
00:08:48
out of like the companion way type area
00:08:50
just so it doesn't get too wet in the
00:08:52
boat because it is pretty hard to dry it
00:08:54
out these days

okay this will be the true test to see
00:10:35
if i can hopefully get a fire going it's
00:10:37
getting pretty chilly tonight so i
00:10:39
figured i'd try
00:10:45

00:12:22
oh
00:12:23
[Music]
00:12:56
well the sun has finally come out after
00:12:58
a very rainy gloomy morning
00:13:01
and i'm finally going to do something
00:13:04
that i've been putting off or haven't
00:13:06
even been putting off i just keep
00:13:07
forgetting about it but i was just
00:13:08
reminded
00:13:09
that our manual bilge pump the hose that
00:13:12
goes into the pump itself
00:13:14
is it's come out and so it doesn't like
00:13:16
stay in and obviously needs to be fixed
00:13:18
and a little more secure for if we need
00:13:20
to use that manual bilge pump
00:13:23
so i'm gonna do a really simple quick
00:13:25
and easy fix
00:13:26
silicone
00:13:28
i'm just gonna put silicone around it
00:13:30
and then secure it with a little screw
00:13:32
tiny tiny little screw
00:13:34
and then that should be good to seal it
00:13:36
and also hold it in place
00:13:38
so if we need to use that pump we don't
00:13:40
run into any issues with it
00:13:54
so in the cockpit this is where you put
00:13:56
the handle and then inside this cubby
00:13:58
here
00:13:59
this is the manual bilge pump right here
00:14:01
and the problem
00:14:04
is this
00:14:07
so i'm going to clean this up
00:14:10
reseal it stick it back in and then put
00:14:12
a tiny little screw in through here and
00:14:15
the idea with that is that hopefully it
00:14:16
won't pull out again and it'll sort of
00:14:18
keep the seal
00:14:21
tight because lots of stuff goes in this
00:14:22
cubby too as you can see there's all
00:14:24
those things being thrown in so yeah
00:14:27
this old stuff is literally like flaking
00:14:29
off i'm just catching it in this old
00:14:32
paint tray that happened to be right
00:14:34
here
00:15:04
um
00:15:23
nice
00:15:25
way more solid
00:15:32
while i'm at it we have a loose cleat
00:15:34
deck cleats so
00:15:36
we'll tighten that
00:15:41
luckily it's um accessible through this
00:15:44
little cubby here
00:15:45
which is nice
00:16:20
turned out to be such a nice day
00:16:28
[Music]
00:16:46
[Music]
00:16:54
i'm gonna have a little bit of a sort of
00:16:56
in-town day which basically just means
00:16:58
going up to the cafe there's like a
00:16:59
little center here with a grocery store
00:17:01
and a cafe because i need to upload a
00:17:03
video for this weekend and
00:17:05
basically on the boat we do have a wi-fi
00:17:08
extender and it works like
00:17:11
okay like it definitely we can get
00:17:14
signal but it's sort of on and off and
00:17:16
the internet isn't super super fast and
00:17:18
then also in terms of our cell service
00:17:20
it shifts a lot like we'll get anywhere
00:17:22
between one and zero bars out here i
00:17:24
don't know why maybe just because of
00:17:26
like where we are and how the boat
00:17:28
drifts and stuff anyway there is a
00:17:29
really great cafe up here with excellent
00:17:31
wi-fi so that is how we get our internet
00:17:35
for uploading also when we go up to the
00:17:36
cafe i was trying to get a seat with an
00:17:39
outlet
00:17:40
um and then i bring my charging cords
00:17:42
just so i can like charge out my laptop
00:17:43
my phone
00:17:44
um just other really small sort of items
00:17:48
obviously we can charge on the boat we
00:17:49
charge all the time on the boat but when
00:17:51
we have the opportunity to charge
00:17:52
elsewhere we do just to save the solar
00:17:54
we haven't had any issues with low
00:17:56
batteries yet we can always charge the
00:17:57
batteries if we run the engine but
00:17:59
obviously since we are off grid we have
00:18:00
to be really conscious about the power
00:18:02
usage that we do use especially if it's
00:18:05
been cloudy and i've had a couple rainy
00:18:06
days here so i'm gonna kill two braids
00:18:08
with one stone
00:18:09
upload the videos charge some
00:18:11
electronics
00:18:12
and
00:18:13
yeah go for a walk there's a nice beach
00:18:15
up there so see what i get up to
00:18:22
also
00:18:24
yes the
00:18:26
hatchboards did not turn out as
00:18:29
nicely as i would have hoped
00:18:31
um
00:18:33
yeah i think what happened is like the
00:18:35
color difference between like the top
00:18:37
here and the darker bottom basically i
00:18:39
think the hatch shades this top part and
00:18:42
so it doesn't get as sun worn
00:18:44
um and in the sun teak kind of turns
00:18:46
like a gray kind of color
00:18:48
anyway it wasn't as noticeable before i
00:18:51
teak oiled them and then once i t oiled
00:18:53
them i feel like it really made the
00:18:55
color difference pop
00:18:57
but
00:18:58
i'm gonna leave it for now but in the
00:18:59
future i do think we'll have to get that
00:19:01
teeth brightener stuff
00:19:02
and
00:19:03
redo the hatchboards so i have noticed
00:19:06
it and
00:19:07
yeah at least they're protected like at
00:19:09
least um the teak oil will help keep
00:19:11
them protected and not dry out but in
00:19:13
terms of like aesthetics
00:19:16
we're gonna have to work on it because
00:19:17
it looks a little funky right now
00:19:38
[Applause]
00:20:15
[Music]
00:20:19
it's turned into a bit of a stormy day
00:20:21
like it's not raining or anything but
00:20:23
it's quite windy you can probably hear
00:20:24
it howling through the chimney
00:20:26
and
00:20:27
there's a swell coming in we're in a
00:20:29
pretty protected area and like nine
00:20:30
times out of ten it's
00:20:32
quite calm but every once in a while
00:20:35
there's like this consistent swell that
00:20:37
comes in one of the great parts about
00:20:39
being on the mooring ball which i've
00:20:41
really been noticing recently is
00:20:43
that when wind storms do come through
00:20:46
the boat has freedom to point into the
00:20:48
wind and to sort of take the waves
00:20:51
how the boat is kind of meant to take
00:20:53
waves and yeah it's just made such a
00:20:55
huge difference compared to being at the
00:20:57
dock where you tie the boat
00:20:59
in one orientation and regardless of
00:21:01
what the weather's doing the boat stays
00:21:03
in one place and so that's why you get a
00:21:05
lot of like jolting and like vibrations
00:21:08
and just kind of really weird movements
00:21:10
so it's really nice to let the boat sort
00:21:11
of float more freely and yeah it
00:21:14
definitely makes for a way more
00:21:15
comfortable stay there's definitely some
00:21:18
challenges that come with living off
00:21:19
grid and living in a more sort of remote
00:21:22
area off the docks but overall it's just
00:21:24
been such a nice change and i think a
00:21:28
much needed change and
00:21:30
in my opinion a really beautiful way to
00:21:33
live our day-to-day has changed
00:21:34
significantly and the majority of our
00:21:36
time is taken up
00:21:38
by simple tasks like you know bailing
00:21:41
out the dinghy dinging to shore to get
00:21:44
to shore going for walks hauling water
00:21:47
making sure we have enough power
00:21:49
and just the really simple
00:21:51
sort of necessities of life if you will
00:21:54
the necessities for us to be able to
00:21:56
live and work on the boat and
00:21:59
yeah i find it's just a really beautiful
00:22:01
way
00:22:02
of living and just so much more
00:22:04
intentional we're way more connected to
00:22:06
our environment and i feel like we're
00:22:10
fighting it less and just living with it
00:22:12
more and obviously part of that is
00:22:14
because
00:22:15
we are in a warmer season but
00:22:17
yeah instead of continuously finding the
00:22:19
cold and fighting the storms like we do
00:22:21
at the dock we can let the boat more or
00:22:24
less do what she wants when wind storms
00:22:26
come so she can point into the wind ride
00:22:28
the waves not have to be like tied and
00:22:30
connected to
00:22:31
the stationary dock and even just living
00:22:33
with the temperature fluctuations
00:22:35
throughout the day
00:22:36
i really noticed that in the mornings
00:22:38
the cabin has cooled down so much from
00:22:39
overnight temperatures that you wouldn't
00:22:41
necessarily think it but if you go
00:22:42
outside and sit in the cockpit it's
00:22:44
actually warmer and lots of times we'll
00:22:45
open the companion way to let that warm
00:22:48
air in
00:22:49
and yeah during the day we can spend
00:22:52
lots of time
00:22:53
in the heat of the day outside
00:22:56
and yeah get a nice breeze going through
00:22:58
the cabin but then as it cools down
00:22:59
again in the evening we sort of find
00:23:02
ourselves coming inside trying to keep
00:23:04
the cabin warm maybe starting fire
00:23:07
bundling up more all that to say it's
00:23:10
been a really beautiful change
00:23:11
particularly being able to do this in
00:23:13
the summer time we're so fortunate to be
00:23:15
able to do it
00:23:16
and not to say that doesn't come with
00:23:18
challenges we've definitely you know had
00:23:19
our challenging days but
00:23:21
it makes it all worth it
00:23:24
just waking up every day to this
00:23:26
you know

Description:

This week I am living the solo female boat life here at our off-grid moorage! For anyone new to the channel, we live on a 30 ft sailboat full time and recently moved to an off-grid moorage the summer months! This means that we get all of our power from the solar system or by running the Diesel engine, and we have to pack in all of our water and food using our little dinghy with an outboard motor. In this video, I share some of my week, including some work- and chore-days where I clean up some of our teak wood on the boat! If you enjoyed this video and want to support us directly, you can receive access to our episodes Ad-Free, our chat community, behind the scene updates and more at https://www.patreon.com/bluemoonlife These videos are made possible by the generosity of viewers like you and we want to thank you so much for being here! If you are new to the channel, Blue Moon is a 1978 Catalina 30 sailing vessel which we acquired in 2020. One year later we decided it was time for a road trip and built out a 1998 Delica to drive across the country. Now we live aboard the boat full-time, take weekend trips in the van, and explore this beautiful world. Thanks for watching! J+G Our amazing Patreon Community!
