00:00:00
oh my gosh what is this thing it's my
00:00:03
mini split folks what we're going to
00:00:05
take a look at today is my friend Carrie
00:00:07
here just installed a mini split air
00:00:09
conditioner onto her van and we're going
00:00:11
to learn a little bit about that and how
00:00:14
you guys might want to consider getting
00:00:16
something like this because it is
00:00:18
amazing so Carrie thank you so much
00:00:20
looking forward to it we're starting our
00:00:23
timer we just turned on the air
00:00:25
conditioning unit it is 86 almost 87° is
00:00:31
inside indoor sensor while the control
00:00:35
is our outdoor sensor right by my
00:00:38
sliding door where it's 84 in the sun I
00:00:42
just turned on the unit it's set for 22°
00:00:46
C and we're going to leave it alone my
00:00:49
solar is currently off and I have about
00:00:52
300 amp hours of lithium batteries
00:00:54
available to it so I can already feel
00:00:58
the coolness coming back towards me how
00:01:00
how long does it usually take for you to
00:01:02
cool it down in here I mean it can be a
00:01:04
matter of minutes depending on where in
00:01:06
the van I'm at how cold I'm trying to
00:01:08
make it um for instance if I was just to
00:01:11
lay here wanting to take a nap with a
00:01:13
cool breeze I just turn it on and forget
00:01:15
about it if I want to leave it for a
00:01:17
little bit um it can take half an hour
00:01:20
to bring it down
00:01:21
10° um but I haven't done that's why
00:01:24
we're doing some of these experiments to
00:01:25
find out just how long it actually takes
00:01:27
yeah that makes sense I mean it was
00:01:29
stuffy in here up until about 30 seconds
00:01:31
ago and it it like as soon as you turn
00:01:32
that on it already feels so much nicer
00:01:34
in here so K what what is the number one
00:01:36
reason that you wanted an air
00:01:39
conditioner um I've got two dog or I had
00:01:41
two dogs when I first got on the road um
00:01:44
now I have one little doubled coat mini
00:01:46
Ai and she's the light of my life and I
00:01:49
want to make sure that she's comfortable
00:01:51
uh and safe when I go on Hikes or when I
00:01:53
go into the grocery store second to that
00:01:55
I work in my van full-time I often have
00:01:57
a lot of meetings and in my first couple
00:02:00
years on the road I can't tell you how
00:02:01
many times I parked found a wonderful
00:02:04
spot I'm in four hours of meetings 4
00:02:06
hours later it's 90 degrees in my van
00:02:08
and I haven't had a minute to move to
00:02:11
something shadier I have been on the
00:02:13
road off and on for six years I've been
00:02:16
in my van for four all right and uh this
00:02:19
is not your first foray into air
00:02:22
conditioner so what are the other
00:02:23
options that you you had and tell me
00:02:25
maybe some good and bad points about
00:02:27
them so I have tried four other air
00:02:31
conditioners they fall into two major
00:02:33
categories one was a window air
00:02:35
conditioning unit which a friend of mine
00:02:37
helped me contrive a frame it was
00:02:40
hanging out of my passenger window it
00:02:44
was not a permanent install so you could
00:02:46
see that as a pro or a con but I
00:02:48
certainly couldn't drive anywhere with
00:02:50
that even Rec even reposition my van a
00:02:52
couple feet because it would fall out
00:02:54
and it did fall out several times the
00:02:57
second type that I used and I had
00:02:59
different versions of it uh were
00:03:01
portable units those are the big ones
00:03:03
that you can buy at Home Depot that are
00:03:05
usually a couple hundred bucks I try to
00:03:07
a 12vt 4000 BTU one that one was
00:03:12
woefully underpowered um I tried a 7,000
00:03:15
BTU from Home Depot again it didn't even
00:03:18
put a dent it wouldn't even maintain the
00:03:20
temperature under similar situation
00:03:23
eventually what I got was a 13,000
00:03:26
BTU uh unit which while it was able to
00:03:30
cool my van they're all wildly
00:03:32
inefficient you take two big tubes one
00:03:35
is an input one is an output and so you
00:03:39
have this really hot air that comes out
00:03:41
of the portable unit that needs to be
00:03:42
vented
00:03:43
outside and one problem with both of
00:03:46
those Solutions was that it
00:03:49
required the cooling unit to be at the
00:03:51
front in the cab which is actually
00:03:53
fundamentally also the greatest source
00:03:55
of heat whereas I spend most of my time
00:03:58
back here and I actually have some
00:04:00
thermal curtains that I can block off
00:04:02
but I wasn't able to do that and so it's
00:04:04
just a inefficiency in the design of of
00:04:07
the system because it's both fighting
00:04:10
against the hottest air that's coming in
00:04:12
and trying to heat that area as opposed
00:04:14
to compartmentalizing the van which this
00:04:17
solution allows me to do and to cool the
00:04:19
area um that I need to live in while
00:04:22
also sectioning off the uh hottest part
00:04:24
of my van this is on my door compared to
00:04:28
the other ones which were temporary
00:04:30
installations and took you know at least
00:04:33
I don't know two or three square feet in
00:04:35
my van when I really only have about 20
00:04:37
or 30 square ft to live in and they were
00:04:40
all bulky and you had to deal with the
00:04:41
storage so some people might think it's
00:04:44
a pro to have a Mobile Installation or
00:04:46
something that can be removed I found it
00:04:48
was actually a big con because it
00:04:50
required me to like find space for it so
00:04:53
you've been very happy with this latest
00:04:54
edition this latest generation oh yes I
00:04:58
have a what's known as backpack mini
00:05:00
split this is an Alibaba special in
00:05:04
other words I got it off of a second a
00:05:06
reseller on eBay um you can find
00:05:09
versions of this on Amazon but I bought
00:05:12
it directly from eBay on the
00:05:14
recommendation of a friend and that
00:05:15
friend has a 70 lb Malamute 200 amps of
00:05:20
lithium battery um and I think about 300
00:05:23
watts of solar and I saw it when we were
00:05:26
down in Baja and we had a couple 90°
00:05:29
days the brand that he had was something
00:05:31
called a tree Lego his was a
00:05:34
24v uh mine is the 12vt version and it's
00:05:37
a 12v uh compressor that's attached to
00:05:41
the back of my van I'll show you a
00:05:42
little bit later but it's all installed
00:05:44
in one on one door I still have access
00:05:47
to the door I can open it it's right by
00:05:50
my head so it cools me um exactly where
00:05:52
I sleep yeah and it really doesn't take
00:05:54
up much room it doesn't stick out very
00:05:56
far no how much did you end up paying
00:05:59
for this unit it all told so I spent
00:06:01
more than other people need to and in
00:06:03
part I was so excited to get it I didn't
00:06:04
do a lot of comparison shopping um
00:06:07
because I got it through a reseller you
00:06:09
can get them as cheap as for or $500 on
00:06:11
eBay I've seen them the exact same unit
00:06:15
uh for as expensive as $2,000 on Amazon
00:06:18
depending on which uh reseller you get
00:06:21
it from um I would say plan to spend
00:06:23
around probably
00:06:26
$700 uh for someone that actually has
00:06:28
more than a couple review on eBay after
00:06:31
you do the install there's an extra
00:06:33
piece that they have to do uh with a
00:06:35
specialized piece of equipment I just
00:06:37
went to an AC an auto AC specialist it
00:06:41
was $100 maybe 45 minutes to drop the
00:06:43
van off they vacuumed it um added all
00:06:46
the free on made sure all the
00:06:48
connections were sound uh and I was on
00:06:50
my way the thing that really sold me on
00:06:53
this was that my friend had a somewhat
00:06:55
minimal uh lithium based system and
00:06:58
could keep his dog really
00:07:00
happy and so what would you say would be
00:07:01
the bare minimum that someone would need
00:07:03
for a system like this regarding solar
00:07:05
in lithium well if you want to run it
00:07:07
all day certainly the 200 amp hours I
00:07:10
think is a minimum I would say at least
00:07:12
300 watts of solar on the roof as well
00:07:15
that's not a huge system that you need
00:07:16
and you just have to make decisions of
00:07:18
what you need to use and in what time
00:07:20
and just to cool it off would would
00:07:22
really help out just a take down that
00:07:24
heat right um I mean we're down it's 80
00:07:28
degrees
00:07:30
uh I'm down 20 amp hours in total and
00:07:33
it's that with my inverter and my the
00:07:35
rest of my setup is pulling about 650
00:07:38
Watts right now which is about what that
00:07:40
window unit pulled so it's been running
00:07:43
for about 25 minutes and it's 80° in
00:07:48
here uh and actually it's increased in
00:07:50
temp outside it's 88° on that
00:07:52
thermometer outside so it's still it's
00:07:54
still fighting against that increase in
00:07:56
temp the other thing we're doing here is
00:07:58
all my windows uncovered like I wanted
00:08:00
this to be kind of a realistic
00:08:02
simulation for if you just wanted to run
00:08:04
into the run into the uh grocery store
00:08:06
or something like that if I were to
00:08:08
actually close off my cab cover that
00:08:10
window right there which is right in the
00:08:12
sun um it would probably cool down even
00:08:16
faster okay so one of the downsides to
00:08:20
having something that is
00:08:22
thermostatically controlled at its
00:08:24
source is that it's actually you can
00:08:27
probably you might be able to hear it a
00:08:28
little bit in the background but the
00:08:29
compressor is cycling off and on because
00:08:32
it because over my bed it's actually
00:08:35
reached the 72° that it wants right and
00:08:38
so it's just cycling on as needed to
00:08:40
maintain the temperature however over
00:08:42
here it's 80° what I would normally do
00:08:46
is turn a fan on um because this pulls
00:08:49
about two or three Watts uh and it runs
00:08:52
on battery this was another cheap RV
00:08:54
living recommendation from a couple of
00:08:55
years ago um and this
00:08:58
actually makes it a huge difference to
00:09:00
cool off that side of the van and
00:09:02
distribute the distribute the cool air
00:09:04
so we just turned the unit off it was
00:09:06
running for 30 minutes and it pulled a
00:09:09
total of 22 amp hours with no solar
00:09:13
turned on it ended up being about 80° in
00:09:16
there at the end um had I ramped up the
00:09:20
fan the whole thing would have been 72
00:09:23
Dees really comfortably the mini split
00:09:25
unit itself really just consists of an
00:09:28
air conditioner
00:09:30
compressor and uh some cooling there's a
00:09:33
fan in there and a couple other
00:09:35
components um and the reason it's called
00:09:37
a mini split is because the um
00:09:40
compressor is outside and it is split
00:09:43
from the blower or the head unit which
00:09:45
is mounted on the inside of my door okay
00:09:48
and so you still have refrigerant lines
00:09:50
that are normally internal on other
00:09:52
units but one there's a couple lines
00:09:55
here for positive and negative electric
00:09:59
and then we have a high pressure and a
00:10:01
low pressure um refrigerant line and we
00:10:04
also have um an electrical uh
00:10:07
communication basically for the
00:10:09
controller inside to send electrical
00:10:11
signals to the unit out here my friend
00:10:13
and I spent a couple of days uh on the
00:10:16
install um frankly the thing that took
00:10:19
the most time was going back and forth
00:10:21
from the hardware store trying to figure
00:10:22
out what bolt sizes we wanted to use
00:10:24
always um I'm one of those people that
00:10:26
likes to you know measure once and try
00:10:29
to fit it three times and it usually
00:10:30
works by the fourth the outdoor unit
00:10:32
itself is actually mounted on a piece of
00:10:36
plywood it's just simple three ply that
00:10:38
I got at the local hardware store that I
00:10:41
mounted directly through the sheet metal
00:10:44
um I put the holes in I sealed the holes
00:10:47
with some Rustoleum paint just to make
00:10:49
sure that um we don't get any um rust on
00:10:54
the rough edges where we put them in I
00:10:56
also once we mounted it I sealed the
00:10:59
inside with silicone again just to make
00:11:01
sure that we don't have any um any
00:11:04
moisture intruding go ahead and open it
00:11:07
so you guys are in luck you get to see
00:11:11
all of the all of the install oh wow
00:11:15
yeah so these are the refrigerant lines
00:11:19
I bought a one-size fits all with
00:11:21
flexible lines if you um have a little
00:11:24
bit more planning involved in your
00:11:26
install you can actually measure the
00:11:29
distance of how you know you're going to
00:11:31
put it together and some of the
00:11:33
manufacturers will probably cut the
00:11:34
lines and adjust the fittings for you in
00:11:37
this case this is just a kit that had 10
00:11:40
ft of flexible line um for your benefit
00:11:44
you get to see the install but you could
00:11:46
imagine it wouldn't be that hard to
00:11:47
actually recess some of this stuff
00:11:50
inside the door and have a neat panel in
00:11:52
front of it so um this is the inside
00:11:56
gasket we have um the high pressure and
00:11:59
low pressure refrigerant lines right
00:12:01
here we have that communication line
00:12:03
that goes to the head unit right here
00:12:05
the power is supplied by these really
00:12:08
big um 4 a uh cables that go right to my
00:12:13
bus bar the positive one is has a
00:12:16
resetable circuit breaker that I added
00:12:19
um just because it never hurts to over
00:12:21
fuse this is actually the line that goes
00:12:24
to the head unit and this is where the
00:12:27
signals from the thermostat up there
00:12:31
travel out outside and control you know
00:12:34
turning off and on and how much the fan
00:12:36
needs to throttle on other things that's
00:12:38
always a little bit of a complication
00:12:39
with any of these units is that they uh
00:12:43
produce condensation right and so this
00:12:45
one in particular has two ports that the
00:12:48
water can come out so when I installed
00:12:51
it I installed it at a slight angle and
00:12:54
what's cool about installing it on my
00:12:56
back door is that these
00:12:59
you don't really want water in them but
00:13:01
they have wheat holes built in and so we
00:13:04
have the condensation line come down and
00:13:07
actually Feeds out to one of my weep
00:13:09
holes right there it's one less hole I
00:13:12
need to put in my door basically thing
00:13:14
about the install was one trying to
00:13:17
figure out how to um fit it on the back
00:13:22
we thought it would just be easier to
00:13:24
put a board on it because then we got to
00:13:26
choose where we put the different the
00:13:29
different bolts in okay um and so that
00:13:32
actually made the install quite a bit
00:13:33
easier because we had a lot more
00:13:35
flexibility in how we wanted to position
00:13:37
it one of the funny things about
00:13:40
this is that I wanted obviously to be
00:13:43
legal I wanted my license plate to be
00:13:45
visible but I also didn't want to lose
00:13:47
my beautiful view on my back window all
00:13:50
right and so it actually fits really
00:13:51
neatly uh on that side I still have full
00:13:54
access to my entire garage um I get in
00:13:58
here on a regular basis um and it's all
00:14:01
contained in one neat install and at
00:14:05
some point I'll probably clean this up
00:14:07
but for now it's been fine so car I
00:14:09
thought that the experiment went really
00:14:11
well what did you think of it I think it
00:14:14
performed uh just as well as I expected
00:14:17
um I kind of wish that I had turned it
00:14:19
up on high when we walked away from it
00:14:21
for half an hour because I think that we
00:14:23
would have been able to demonstrate that
00:14:24
it cools the entire rig down to 72 Dees
00:14:28
like it get oftentimes when I'm I've got
00:14:30
it on all day I'll actually need to put
00:14:32
on like a jacket or something or turn it
00:14:35
up a little bit because as you said it
00:14:37
actually gets pretty chilly it does once
00:14:39
you get Once you turn it up and have
00:14:40
fans help project that air across the
00:14:43
length of the van that is an interesting
00:14:45
point you have to keep that in mind that
00:14:47
any thermostatically controlled thing I
00:14:48
have the same issue with my furnace
00:14:51
which is at the front of my van that
00:14:53
often times what you set the thermostat
00:14:54
to is not necessarily going to be
00:14:56
equivalent on both ends of the van and
00:14:58
so having those portable fans or other
00:15:01
ways to move the air across the van
00:15:04
regardless of what air conditioning unit
00:15:05
you have is really important so Carrie
00:15:08
thank you so much for giving us a full
00:15:11
