00:00:00
Oh my god, we're out.
00:00:08
Welcome back. I'm Tedward. Welcome to my
00:00:11
2023 Lexus GX 460. And welcome to
00:00:15
Boston, which is a nightmare to drive.
00:00:18
[laughter]
00:00:19
It's not so bad right now, though, cuz
00:00:21
it's actually a Sunday afternoon. It's
00:00:25
not terrible. Traffic still gets a
00:00:27
little nutty out here, but I wanted to
00:00:28
take you on a short therapy drive and
00:00:31
also kind of figure out why people have
00:00:34
moved toward SUVs so much because a lot
00:00:38
of these roads can get tricky to
00:00:40
navigate with a sports car or a fun car.
00:00:43
And like, do you really want to park
00:00:45
next to that guy? Really? You're going
00:00:47
to go spend all that hardearned cash on
00:00:49
your dream Porsche and then you're going
00:00:51
to park next to a Corolla that looks
00:00:53
like it every single body panel has been
00:00:55
smashed. I don't know, man. That's kind
00:00:58
of what I like about this Lexus is that
00:01:00
it kind of splits the difference. The
00:01:02
Hummer maybe a little too wide and maybe
00:01:05
not the most parkable thing, but I do
00:01:07
really You know what? Let's do this. Why
00:01:09
not? We'll we'll change directions a
00:01:12
little bit. Instead of going straight
00:01:13
down there, we'll follow the Boston PD.
00:01:23
Got always watch for people just jutting
00:01:25
out into crosswalks in Boston. People
00:01:27
People really don't pay attention, which
00:01:29
is a very American thing in cities
00:01:31
anyway, so it's not Boston specific, but
00:01:33
people will just run into the road in
00:01:35
the craziest scenarios. And now, dude,
00:01:37
I'm sure every city has this, but these,
00:01:39
we call them mosquitoes. The little door
00:01:41
dash guys, man, they are everywhere. And
00:01:44
it is brutal. They are so reckless in
00:01:48
the way they drive. They go up the
00:01:49
sidewalks, they go up the bike lanes,
00:01:52
and then they just do anything and
00:01:53
everything in traffic, heating zero
00:01:56
rules. But look at these potholes. Look
00:01:58
at this. Oh, like that would take out my
00:02:01
911 for sure. That would not be a pretty
00:02:04
scenario.
00:02:08
You can go. I'll let you go.
00:02:16
I'm going to put headlights on
00:02:35
I don't know if you guys are familiar
00:02:37
with Boston. That's the car gurus
00:02:39
building and it blocks the view of the
00:02:41
credential center which is blocked right
00:02:43
here, but the better looking building in
00:02:46
the city and the more identifiable
00:02:47
building in the city. And when you're
00:02:48
coming on the Mass Pike, which is right
00:02:49
there, you can see the highway below us.
00:02:52
That is the entry into the city. And
00:02:54
usually you get a great view of the
00:02:56
skyline and that building kind of blocks
00:02:58
it. But there is a cool section in the
00:03:00
middle of it which I really like. And
00:03:02
there's also Rivian is in there as well.
00:03:04
So, there are some cool aspects to it. I
00:03:06
think the building looks better now. It
00:03:07
has some glass in it, but when they were
00:03:09
building it for a couple years, it it
00:03:10
was so bizarre.
00:03:12
Here's what we'll do. We'll head down
00:03:13
Boilston. I don't know what this guy is
00:03:16
doing.
00:03:19
That's bizarre. Like, you can't make
00:03:21
this stuff up sometimes.
00:03:33
And I'll be honest, these are places I
00:03:35
don't normally drive unless I'm on
00:03:37
camera. Like, it's kind of fun to film
00:03:39
it, but otherwise, there's just not a
00:03:42
whole lot of joy in being here
00:03:45
[laughter] with a car at least,
00:03:48
which again, I guess brings up the idea
00:03:49
like why have a car in the city? I
00:03:52
complain all the time that it's very
00:03:53
difficult to get here and park here and
00:03:55
all this stuff, but like that's kind of
00:03:56
the point. The more difficult it is to
00:03:57
have a car, the less likely you are to
00:03:59
have a car. And then the cities are
00:04:02
better because then you but you just
00:04:04
need to have better public
00:04:05
transportation. And Boston there, it's
00:04:08
been better lately. The new guy, he's
00:04:09
like the only guy I forget his name and
00:04:12
I feel bad, but he's the head of the the
00:04:14
tea, the public transportation. He's the
00:04:17
only guy who's made a sizable difference
00:04:19
in the quality of the the trans public
00:04:23
transportation in Boston in in decades.
00:04:26
And he's I swear this poor guy I think
00:04:27
he's aged like a hundred years. Look
00:04:29
that that mosquito just went up the
00:04:31
wrong way on a bike lane on Boilston.
00:04:33
Like they just do whatever. Um
00:04:36
but yeah, we need better buses. We need
00:04:37
better trains. Honestly, as a car
00:04:40
enthusiast, I would just prefer to have
00:04:42
trains everywhere. I don't want to have
00:04:43
to fly to Detroit or New York. Like why
00:04:46
can't I just jump on a highspeed rail?
00:04:49
But no, we've decided that this is the
00:04:52
way.
00:04:54
It's not It's like not anti-car to be
00:04:57
anti-car. Does that make sense? Like am
00:04:59
I I think I'm allowed to be anti-car
00:05:05
for the sake of preserving cars because
00:05:07
otherwise if everyone has cars then I
00:05:10
don't get to use my fun ones. Oh, I
00:05:12
guess I guess this is where we're at
00:05:13
now.
00:05:20
What's going on here? the Mandarin.
00:05:25
Oh, that's probably going to copyright
00:05:26
me. Nope, not listening to that.
00:05:30
To live in the city with a car is to
00:05:33
struggle in the city with a car. And and
00:05:35
it's by design, I think, at this point
00:05:37
because honestly, you should be
00:05:39
discouraging people from having cars in
00:05:41
cities because the cities are better,
00:05:44
more walkable, more livable, cleaner,
00:05:46
all of the things if you don't have so
00:05:48
many personal forms of transportation.
00:05:51
this large. If you've got a bicycle, if
00:05:53
you've got buses, if you've got trains,
00:05:54
great. Like people who can move around.
00:05:55
But it is a pain when you're someone who
00:05:57
lives outside of the city and wants to
00:05:58
come in once in a while because there's
00:06:00
still not a great suitable way to get in
00:06:01
and out efficiently. And if you want to
00:06:04
stay late to get out because a lot of
00:06:06
our trains don't run that late. So if I
00:06:08
did take the train in, I might not be
00:06:11
getting home because I stayed in the
00:06:13
city till 11 or midnight and now there's
00:06:16
no public transportation back. So it
00:06:18
does kind of suck. And
00:06:21
I am a huge proponent of public
00:06:22
transportation because I think better
00:06:24
public transportation makes for better
00:06:26
driving. Frankly, the less people that
00:06:28
rely on a car because most people don't
00:06:30
want to actually have a car in the city,
00:06:32
believe it or not, the better it is for
00:06:34
people who have cars. So to be a proper
00:06:38
car enthusiast, I think in some ways you
00:06:40
have to be anti-car. You actually have
00:06:43
to you actually have to be against so
00:06:48
many car freedoms in these areas because
00:06:52
if we just put money toward better
00:06:54
highspeed rail and better buses and and
00:06:57
more carefully thought out public
00:06:59
transportation then driving would just
00:07:01
be a pleasure again. You know, make
00:07:04
driving a pleasure again. That would be
00:07:06
nice.
00:07:18
This guy's going to try to kill himself.
00:07:36
I do want you to take this into
00:07:37
consideration though when you're one of
00:07:39
those people who says, "I would daily
00:07:40
anything." Would you? Because I don't
00:07:43
want to sit in this nightmare
00:07:46
bumperto-bumper, barely moving traffic
00:07:48
in my aircooled 911 or in like a
00:07:50
Lamborghini or in anything fun really.
00:07:53
It feels like wasted miles and you're
00:07:55
just so vulnerable. Especially when
00:07:57
you're low to the ground like that. You
00:07:59
think that white Tesla cares where you
00:08:02
are? Like they don't. They they they
00:08:04
just want to They're barely driving.
00:08:06
They're barely drive. Rhode Island
00:08:07
plate. Oh my god. Forget it. Forget it.
00:08:09
Toast. You're toast.
00:08:29
Ooh, street parked Mullison or Flying
00:08:32
Spur? Flying Spur, right?
00:08:35
Why am I bad at identifying those two
00:08:37
cars?
00:08:39
Either way, handicap parking. So
00:08:41
hopefully they've got the correct
00:08:43
placard
00:08:45
or they're uh just taking liberties as a
00:08:48
Bentley owner.
00:08:50
I see a placard appropriately parked.
00:09:16
Oh, and I see a Toyota Land Cruiser over
00:09:18
there. There are some good street parked
00:09:21
cars, but you know, the thing is the
00:09:24
good street parked cars typically are in
00:09:26
the good neighborhoods, right? Makes
00:09:28
sense. So, everyone loves to be like,
00:09:30
"Oh, street park everything." Well,
00:09:31
yeah, sure. Street park everything in
00:09:33
front of your like $8 million brownstone
00:09:36
in Boston. One thing that off-roading
00:09:37
teaches you is that your Toyota V8 can
00:09:40
idle and do low RPM, no air flow stuff
00:09:44
for just days on end. So, luckily, I
00:09:47
don't worry about it. I mean, granted,
00:09:49
it's 45 degrees, so we're not really in
00:09:50
any dire straits temperature- wise, but
00:09:52
still, you just never know. What I don't
00:09:55
understand about Boston is I have a
00:09:57
green arrow, but I don't have a green
00:09:59
light over there, so we can't go
00:10:00
anywhere.
00:10:08
So, we just have to kind of sit in this
00:10:10
weird holding pattern of
00:10:16
and like technically I'm not in a good
00:10:18
spot because I'm I'm in a no block zone
00:10:21
essentially. Oh, check out the Land
00:10:22
Cruiser behind us. That's cool.
00:10:26
It's just like a no- win situation.
00:10:32
Like you basically have to stack up all
00:10:34
the cars illegally blocking
00:10:36
intersections and then wait for the
00:10:39
other intersections to clear in an
00:10:42
unsistatic way. It's insane
00:10:55
cuz see like this light's green but that
00:10:56
light's red. So now if that guy doesn't
00:10:59
pile in far enough, then we're blocking
00:11:02
this intersection which blocks those
00:11:03
people.
00:11:05
This is too nuts. Dude, please go.
00:11:07
Please go a little faster. Tighten that
00:11:10
up. Tighten that up. Let's go. Let's do
00:11:12
this. And then hopefully nobody
00:11:16
does anything stupid here. That's all I
00:11:19
want. Oh my god. We're out.
00:11:30
Who says the GX isn't fast enough?
00:11:38
I was going to take you guys down some
00:11:41
Boston streets and have a little Boston
00:11:42
experience, but this was a little too
00:11:44
Boston. I did not want to sit in
00:11:47
bumper-to-bumper traffic for the next 2
00:11:49
hours to show you basically nothing.
00:11:52
Like, what a nightmare, dude. Like what
00:11:54
a nightmare driving in the city has
00:11:56
become. Not fun.
00:12:02
This is the problem too is I just don't
00:12:04
know where to live because I would like
00:12:07
to live in the city because I think
00:12:09
there's more social life and things to
00:12:11
do and people to see and meet. And
00:12:13
that's great. I really do dig that.
00:12:14
That's a great time. But like my job is
00:12:18
literally reviewing cars. And can you
00:12:20
imagine if I'm bringing cars home for
00:12:23
the weekend or the week and I've got to
00:12:25
park something in there? Like there's
00:12:28
just no way. I wouldn't sleep at night
00:12:29
because I'd be worried about the Phantom
00:12:31
or one of the Bentleys or literally
00:12:33
anything.
00:12:35
And then
00:12:37
to get them out would just take me
00:12:39
forever.
00:12:42
Yeah, man.
00:12:45
Oh, leave me to these wide open roads.
00:13:14
All of those bumps seemingly
00:13:16
insignificant in the Lexus, but I will
00:13:18
tell you those feel pretty significant
00:13:22
when you're in the 911 or in like a low
00:13:24
sports car and you're just thinking,
00:13:26
"Ooh, what did I just touch?" And if
00:13:28
you're just trying to keep up with
00:13:29
traffic that's not even going that fast
00:13:31
cuz that was 60 mph. Imagine imagine
00:13:34
traffic's going 75 80 and you've got to
00:13:36
like slow down for that because you know
00:13:39
if you hit that compression you're just
00:13:42
going to ruin a car and then you're like
00:13:45
causing a real dangerous situation with
00:13:47
traffic because you've just slowed down
00:13:49
20 miles an hour.
00:13:52
Crazy. Crazy.
00:13:55
Here's
00:14:09
the New Balance building
00:14:12
and then also where the Celtics
00:14:14
practice.
00:14:16
But yeah, all you Corvette lovers, this
00:14:18
is where the magic happens. Looks like a
00:14:20
cruise ship, doesn't it?
00:14:40
Oh man, the salt has already been laid,
00:14:43
which is nice because the temps have
00:14:45
been getting really cold at night. And
00:14:47
this car, I do undercoat it. I use the
00:14:49
PB Blaster rust prevention stuff. And I
00:14:52
gotta do another round of it because I
00:14:55
did it last year and I think I think
00:14:56
it's done some good, but we'll find out.
00:14:59
Uh I gotta get under there and do it
00:15:01
again. And this is really the only
00:15:02
vehicle that I'm going to be driving
00:15:04
this winter. So, let's do our best to
00:15:07
preserve. So, people were asking me
00:15:08
about that. People were also asking me
00:15:10
about my alignment, and it's better. I
00:15:12
did get an alignment uh probably like
00:15:15
6,000 miles ago and it did straighten
00:15:18
the car out a little bit, but this car,
00:15:19
it always just kind of follows the crown
00:15:21
of the road or the the angle of the
00:15:23
road. So, if there's some camber in the
00:15:24
road like this, it's always going to be
00:15:26
kind of falling off and you've got to
00:15:28
counter steer that. So, even though it
00:15:30
is as straight as it's ever been and as
00:15:32
good as it's ever been, you still do
00:15:34
need to put in some left lock when
00:15:36
you're in the right lane. If I'm in the
00:15:38
left lane, I got to put in a little
00:15:39
right lock. So, you understand. I think
00:15:41
it's just what it is to drive a GX. And
00:15:44
you notice it more in the video because
00:15:46
you're looking at a steering wheel
00:15:48
that's not perfectly level, but you
00:15:51
don't notice it that much when you're
00:15:52
actually driving the car.
00:15:57
And now I've got 23,726
00:16:00
miles. It's still a fresh little baby. I
00:16:03
do 5,000 milei oil change intervals with
00:16:06
this despite the fact that Lexus says 10
00:16:08
is appropriate and encouraged. Uh I'm
00:16:12
gonna not heed that. I think I think
00:16:14
Okay, here's my theory. I think I've
00:16:16
said this before, but I think that
00:16:17
automakers who provide the first one or
00:16:20
two free oil changes have stretched
00:16:25
the life of that oil to its ragged edge
00:16:28
in a in in an effort to say, "Look,
00:16:31
we're giving you 20,000 mi of free
00:16:33
service, but really, they're giving you
00:16:35
two oil changes," which really should be
00:16:37
four oil changes. I don't know that I
00:16:40
have the data to back this up, but
00:16:41
something tells me that that can't be
00:16:42
right. uh 10,000 mi on 0W20 and the
00:16:46
dealership, they'll say, "Oh, but sir,
00:16:48
it's synthetic. It's synthetic oil."
00:16:49
It's like, "Yeah, well, it's all
00:16:50
synthetic oil. We're not putting I'm not
00:16:52
putting the stuff I put in my 911 into
00:16:55
this car." So, pretty much all oil is
00:16:57
synthetic at this point. So, that
00:16:58
talking point is valid to some extent,
00:17:02
but I still just would rather do shorter
00:17:05
intervals and not even risk wearing out
00:17:10
critical mechanical components of this
00:17:12
V8.
00:17:14
and ahead of me. Man, that is the crown
00:17:17
jewel
00:17:19
of Logan Airport. That's the Framingham
00:17:21
Logan Express. So, that's how I get to
00:17:24
the airport. That bus is a miracle. It
00:17:27
costs $9 each way. The parking when you
00:17:31
park there is $7 a day. If I were to
00:17:33
drive into the city, it would cost me
00:17:36
like $60 or $70 a day to park at Logan
00:17:40
Airport. and driving in there is a total
00:17:43
nightmare. This makes life so easy. Yes,
00:17:45
sure you have to ride some public
00:17:47
transportation with some weirdos.
00:17:49
Totally cool with it. That bus game
00:17:52
changer. And also, I feel like I'm doing
00:17:54
my part to get more cars off the road
00:17:56
for the commute into the airport because
00:17:59
usually when I'm going to the airport,
00:18:00
it's during rush hour in the morning.
00:18:02
And the less of me there are clogging up
00:18:05
the roads going to the airport, the
00:18:07
better it is for everybody else and
00:18:08
myself really. So all for it. Find ways
00:18:12
around using your car when you can.
00:18:40
This road is singing.
00:18:43
You hear that?
00:18:45
That was wild.
00:19:07
That was sticking out a lot more than it
00:19:09
should have been. [laughter]
00:19:14
What is Look at this.
00:19:18
That's a snow machine.
00:19:20
All these people cross country skiing.
00:19:24
That looks fun. I want to do that.
00:19:30
It's a great way to stay in shape.
00:19:43
That sound is just my sparkling water
00:19:46
can sitting in the cup holder.
00:19:56
So that's it. We got out of the city.
00:19:58
I'm actually ending this video on a
00:19:59
different day because I I went and did
00:20:01
some other things and then I forgot to
00:20:02
end the video alto together. But I
00:20:04
wanted to take you through the
00:20:06
struggles, I guess, of driving through
00:20:08
Boston and and why it's really difficult
00:20:10
to decide where to live because as a
00:20:12
non-car person, I would 100% just live
00:20:15
in a city. I would rent some
00:20:17
exorbitantly expensive place and I
00:20:19
wouldn't have car insurance and I
00:20:20
wouldn't have to pay to maintain these
00:20:23
things and or park them for that matter
00:20:26
and I wouldn't have the emotional stress
00:20:28
of trying to park them in certain places
00:20:29
because I certainly can't afford the $8
00:20:32
million brownstone that we saw earlier
00:20:34
and just street park the 911 or the M5
00:20:36
or this. I I just I would never sleep.
00:20:39
And I I I very much respect those who
00:20:41
can put their cars out on the street and
00:20:44
go to bed. Like what a what a wonderful
00:20:47
life. You don't need therapy. You you
00:20:50
are zen. I'm not there. Like I as much
00:20:53
as I don't want to live in the suburbs,
00:20:54
I want that driveway. I want to have an
00:20:57
enormous driveway that nobody can door
00:20:59
ding me or touch my cars. It's one of
00:21:01
the reasons why I love Garage 42 is
00:21:03
because I know my cars are stored safely
00:21:06
by enthusiasts and that nothing's going
00:21:08
to happen there.
00:21:10
So, that's kind of the trick, man. Is
00:21:13
what do you do with cities as a car
00:21:14
person? I still don't have good answers
00:21:16
for this because I'm not wealthy enough
00:21:19
to to make even the wealthy people. I
00:21:21
actually I know some really really
00:21:23
wealthy people in the city who have
00:21:25
dedicated parking where they still park
00:21:27
underground under their outrageous
00:21:29
houses, but they have neighbors and
00:21:32
those neighbors park there. And I'm
00:21:33
telling you, man, their Bentleys get
00:21:35
scratched by their neighbors and their
00:21:37
neighbors are like, "What of it, man? Go
00:21:39
get it fixed." It's like they don't they
00:21:41
don't see the value in having a clean
00:21:43
car fixed. They're just like, "Ah, I got
00:21:44
a body guy. You've got money. It's
00:21:46
fine." It's like, "It's not about the
00:21:47
money."
00:21:49
So, I guess we're ending this video on
00:21:51
another completely bizarro topic because
00:21:54
I don't think I carried a theme
00:21:56
throughout this entire video, but that
00:21:57
is the nature of my brain and the
00:21:59
therapy drives. And I hope you enjoyed a
00:22:01
little more time in the Lexus GX 460. I
00:22:04
always like spending time in this thing.
00:22:05
So, thank you guys so much for watching,
00:22:07
liking, commenting, and subscribing. If
00:22:09
you have suggestions on how to live your
00:22:11
life as a person who wants to be social
00:22:13
in or near a city, but also wants to
00:22:16
have your vehicles safe and protected
00:22:18
and not deal with nightmare traffic on
00:22:20
your commute every day, well, let me
00:22:23
know in the comments section because I'm
00:22:24
very curious. Don't forget to respect
00:22:26
the drive and I'll see you in the next
00:22:27
one.
