Description:
Imagine Airships Over Manhattan – As Big as Ocean Liners! Most of us have forgotten that such giants once existed. The documentary "Milestones of Aviation: The Golden Age of Airships" explores the grand past and offers a glimpse into the future of airships. The German Count Zeppelin took inspiration from the vision of an airship during the American War of Independence and, despite great resistance, turned it into reality. He developed steerable balloons and gave them a rigid frame. Hundreds of Zeppelins were built in Germany, Italy, England, and the USA. As luxury liners, they crossed the oceans, operating scheduled services between Frankfurt and Rio de Janeiro and Lakehurst, near New York. They were meant to compete with passenger ships. However, after the crash of the Hindenburg in Lakehurst in May 1937, their "golden age" came to an abrupt end. To this day, the catastrophe remains shrouded in mystery, much like the disaster of the Titanic. A similarly devastating accident ended British airship aviation—the R101 crashed over France on its way to India because it was overloaded. The documentary revisits the golden age of Zeppelins, which were once considered the safest aircraft. They exude a unique sense of romance and still have a loyal fan base that remains fascinated by the "lighter-than-air" balloon principle on which Zeppelins operate. Nearly 100 years after the first "cigars" ascended from Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance, a new airship was created: the Zeppelin NT. Its maiden flight in September 1997 sparked great expectations. However, soon after, an even more ambitious project collapsed—the cargo airship Cargolifter turned out to be an expensive and technically unfeasible illusion. Whether airship aviation will ever recover from this failure remains uncertain. What endures are the sensational black-and-white images of airships that continue to be featured in major exhibitions and captivate people's imaginations. ------- Chapters ▷ 00:00 Graf Zeppelin gas balloon in Stuttgart ▷ 01:49 Ferdinand Count Zeppelin ▷ 05:44 Delag: First Airline, 1909 ▷ 06:10 World War I ▷ 08:00 First Passenger Air Route ▷ 09:23 Norge in Spitzbergen, 1926 ▷ 16:29 USS Akron ▷ 20:10 Full-Scale-Model of the Airship Gondola D-LZ129 ▷ 24:00 Airship in the Third Reich ▷ 26:32 Hindenburg ▷ 40:01 Modern Airships ▷ 50:30 End credits ------- Subscribe to wocomoMOTORS: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGIFF6Z8RIt5GWBrHYxzZiQ?sub_confirmation=1 Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/unsupportedbrowser ------- Original Title: Milestones of Aviation - The Golden Age of Airships © 2008, Licensed by Vidicom ------- A channel for enthusiasts of all kinds of motoryzed vehicles, aircrafts, trains and vessels.
